Haruhi sucks because it has no plot.
I think you just took the worst anime you could find.

Hehe, was that the second season you downloaded? You need about a dozen more "fuck you's" for the first 8 episodes of that.TVG wrote: So I downloaded 8 episodes, watched them, and all I can say is: fuck you, fuck you fuck you.

Does anyone here read Franken Fran? Definitely one of the most humorous manga I know about, and the only one I still follow. It's definitely more of an old-style gory manga than a moeblob show, that's for sure.

I'm not a fan of modern anime at all, but I rented the first volume of Haruhi and I thought it was very intriguing.
I also thought it was cool that the bookworm girl was reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons. That's on my to-read list for this year.

Yeah it's the first season I downloaded, basically the beginning.
You might not consider it flagship but it's one of the most talked about amimes these days so I tough why not check it out.
AliceMargatroid is right, it has virtually no plot and no incentive for me to continue watching. After forcing myself to sit trough 8 episodes I wasn't interested in anything. I didn't find it funny either. Maybe it's not my type of humor but it seems just like random events with no punchline or comedic timing. Dr. Slump, now that's fucking funny even tho it has no plot at all.
Talking about funny, I must read Noritaka again one day. Does it exist in english? If it exists or if you understand french do yourself a favor and read it.

It's not as easy as the "first season, second season". I recommend the DTV-rip of the original first season airing order (a.f.k.) which is not quite like, say, the first DVD edition. Not saying you'd like it any better; just saying.TVG wrote:Yeah it's the first season I downloaded, basically the beginning.
It is not quite a comedy show. The word "melancholy" in the title should be a hint. It's all under the strong influence of Saturn so to speak.TVG wrote:I didn't find it funny either. Maybe it's not my type of humor but it seems just like random events with no punchline or comedic timing.
Well, you're the one who called the Eureka Seven animation quality "extremely shitty" and then praised the CG effects in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, so there's that about seriousness.ryu wrote:uh ...

Re: Why modern anime sucks nowadays?

I've had the first "box" set (11 episodes) of Nana on top of the teevee for over a month. The quality of the animation is tops, very smooth, and the story is compelling, yet there's something about it I don't quite like; I probably would've liked it when I was a kid, but it doesn't pack the same impact nowadays. I had the same problems with Peach Girl and Strawberry Panic, but they picked up midway through the series and concluded fairly well. I think my chief complaint for these series is that they start off waaaay slow with too many plot devices, yet they're only planned for about 26 episodes. Strawberry Panic could've used some serious editing to whittle things down to three or four main/strong characters/personalities instead of a bunch of filler... plus the whole "yuri" thing was very off-putting at first. The chara designs for both series took a little getting used to, although SP did end up looking good after some time (esp. the "Shizuma" design with the silver, flowing hair).

It definitely had some moe elements I hated, but the depiction of Tamao's friendship with Nagisa was good - sad, but good. It's almost on the level of stuff such as Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku, and Touch.
Count me as another one who just could not get into Haruhi Suzumiya... at all.

I dunno...after all that praise, I honestly was expecting the final episodes to be more epic. The battles should've been (even) larger in scale or something. It felt like the show didn't quite use its full potential.xris wrote:This is a first for me.. You are a troll. You just described this crap:greg wrote:There's a difference between a show that features moe characters and a show that is essentially just a collection of moe characters and little else. It's been established that there definitely is a list of stereotypical moe personalities, and it's like you can just put them up on a wall, throw darts at the stereotypes to choose them, then insert them into a show where nothing really happens. Episode 1: a trip to the hotspring! Episode 2: Who's bra is this? The cups are big! Episode 3: Homework is boring! Episode 4: Let's go to the beach! Blah blah blah. The moe element is what drives the show, not the show's plot.Obiwanshinobi wrote: Dunno, man, I hope those who use the buzzword "moeblob" actually have any idea about the popular shows out there. In Lucky Star, for instance, maybe half of the female cast have some moe points. Certainly NOT Konata, not Kagami, neither the American girl nor the porn-drawing meganekko - basically the geeky types. What's moe about geeks? Not much it seems. K-On!, on the other hand, is practically made of moe service.
That being said, I am a bit interested in Lucky Star, and I've had several people tell me that I may like it.

There's no trying. Anyone can do an image and video search for this s**t and that's what they get. The other stuff you mention is an afterthought; it doesn't look as if it enters into the equation of what is being pushed. Why would anyone who hates the moe theme even bother to look any further?Obiwanshinobi wrote:Trying too hard, aren't you? Re: Why modern anime sucks nowadays?
No way. So you mean to say this moe cartoon would be the equivalent of The Princess Bride in terms of "princess" movies? Also, it's not as if there's a glut in the movie industry of princess-themed movies, although rom-coms and chick-flix do bring things down quite a bit (in the same manner moe brings Japanese animation and comics down).Ex-Cyber wrote:Why would I watch The Princess Bride? Re: Why modern anime sucks nowadays?
Perhaps not to the same extent, but there's a similar disconnect between the impression one would get from the promotional media and the actual thrust of the series, it frequently invokes moe tropes for parody/caricature rather than playing them straight (that motivator may as well be a Konata quote), and is full of idiosyncratic humor.xbl0x180 wrote:No way. The funny thing is, I haven't even really watched it, mostly because I'm afraid that I'd have to spend about an hour per episode reading notes about the in-jokes (the Hirano/Konata/Haruhi nexus and its related bits, for starters) and references.

Thank you so much for posting this. It redeemed all of these eyesore moe pics being plastered all over this thread. Fingers crossed that they don't fuck up the pacing (Yeah, Eva Rebuild 1.0, I'm looking at you)...though it would be crazy of them not to make this a trilogy, instead of only one feature length film.

Right at the beginning of the unedited Dragon Ball cartoon you get to see the protagonist's genitals, naturally without pubic hair, which by the Japanese entertainment rules of the time was kosher. Why would anyone look any further when there's a pic spam material right after the opening?
Why would they look into Urusei Yatsura or Kimagure Orange Road, while we're at it?xbl0x180 wrote:The other stuff you mention is an afterthought; it doesn't look as if it enters into the equation of what is being pushed. Why would anyone who hates the moe theme even bother to look any further?
The virtually moeless characters in Lucky Star I mentioned wouldn't be as developed in a pet girls show. It takes effort that would be only watering down the fanservice. For example, only one character had lost a parent and she lives with her dad of all pepole. She looks a lot like him too. How moe is that?
Not saying there's no fanservice in Lucky Star, but what's there is a far cry from this. I found that opening rash-inducing and didn't bother looking any further. That's why I don't rant on about a show I haven't watched.

So what? It doesn't change the fact Lucky Star is pretty much the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff members have been talking about in reference to moe and its effect on anime nowadays. Dragon Ball didn't do that. Actually, Dragon Ball kicked arse back then and, most definitely, it kicks arse now.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I just did an image search for アタックNo.1. I haven't seen Lucky Star because there's nothing about it that interests me, because it smacks of what - I think - sucks about anime. Now, I'm not trying to convince anyone of this point, or that I'm even right. I'm merely expressing the sentiment/view that, whenever I see Lucky Star, it's usually associated with the worst in anime fandom nowadays. I mean, you can explain every detail and quirk about the show, but, ultimately, it looks and sounds like moe to me. It's not just that title, though, but a number of manga and videos with similar visuals and themes. Again, I'm just not that interested in shows about little girls (unless it's something classic/good, like Heidi Of The Alps, Perrine, and Candy Candy). Why would they look into Urusei Yatsura or Kimagure Orange Road, while we're at it?xbl0x180 wrote:The other stuff you mention is an afterthought; it doesn't look as if it enters into the equation of what is being pushed. When I stopped collecting, it was partly because I disliked Tenchi Muyo! and Evangelion, and when I came back to it things looked even worse! Hahaha. However, I'm pretty sure there is stuff I enjoy watching (then and now) that others will consider worthless crap and they'd also say it adds to the reason why Japanese animation has been on the decline for the past 15 or so years... I just didn't read or hear it that much before the way I do now (this topic being an example of that).

What fact? You don't know what the show really is because you didn't watch it - that's more of a fact.xbl0x180 wrote:It doesn't change the fact Lucky Star is pretty much the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff members have been talking about in reference to moe and its effect on anime nowadays.
Calling Lucky Star characters "little girls" is about as accurate as calling women in their twenties "old ladies". I don't know where you got the idea. It's a show about female geeks - that's the hook. I'd say Nadesico (rather than Evangelion or Tenchi Muyo!) was the forerunner of it.xbl0x180 wrote:Again, I'm just not that interested in shows about little girls (unless it's something classic/good, like Heidi Of The Alps, Perrine, and Candy Candy).
