Thanks a bunch, SCEA

NIS America wrote:Santa Ana, Calif. (July 14, 2011) – NIS America announced today that Disgaea® 4: A Promise Unforgotten will have minor restrictions in the Map Edit mode due to certain regulations. “Regarding Disgaea 4's map edit system, regulation differences between regions made it very difficult to keep in. However, thanks to all the help from our development team and SCEA, we were able to keep the system by making just some minor design adjustments. Players won't be able to create a completely detailed map, but this new system is still a great way to expand the Disgaea universe and share your own creations with players around the nation,” says NIS America producer Jack Niida.

[...]

Map Editing adjustments:
-Instead of individual blocks to create maps, a number of preset “landforms” will be available for users to create their own maps.
-Multiples of the same object, not including geo blocks or characters, cannot be placed next to or on top of each other.
-Character/map names and descriptions will be randomized.
I'm so glad they made these changes. Imagine how horrible it would be if people were able to make a map that said "butts". Or worse, a map containing pixel art of a copyrighted character!

I wouldn't be surprised if SCEA gave NISA the choice of:

1) Take out anything that could be used for offensive content, or
2) Employ someone full-time to censor offensive content

Yea, this is such a huge problem in other games. Every time I load up a Use Map Settings game in Starcraft there's a giant dong on the map, with copyrighted music playing in the background. Like, every time. And going to a Counter Strike server with custom maps, the walls are always tiled with F-bombs and Mario porn. Yep, every single time.

So yea, I'm glad we can be saved from the epidemic that's totally widespread and out of control in every single game that has custom content. Because "ESRB warning: Game experience may change when played online" just doesn't cut it anymore.

I was half interested in this, so I'm somewhat sad to see it censored like this. I normally don't play with map edit functions, but this is still grade-A Are-Ee-Tarded, as Mr. Larrity would say before allowing such a map editor to go through in the hopes of increasing sales.

I'm going to be more disappointed when someone still manages to throw a dong in, even with the censorship. It's like DRM and how all the hackers still get past it but paying customers still have to deal with the figurative sodomy.

Speaking of which, the ability to torture underage archer girls in the dungeon to increase their stats is still in, right?
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

I'm not sure offhand what this blogger's source is, but...
Map editing is not the only feature that has been altered. Originally, there was a torture system placed in to Disgaea 4 that disciplined your minions on an S&M based wooden horse. That has been replaced with a cute little kitty that they ride on.

This really isn't quite the same effect.

As far as I can understand, this was done to keep the game under the Cero rating for teens. I have no doubt that NISA has failed to take any bold steps to alter this decision for the less stringent ESRB system.

Horse wiener was fine, but S&M is not? DOUBLE STANDARDS ABOUND.

Does this game have any other redeeming qualities, at least? I feel like torture and map editing are only two small components of a much larger fetish-driven Japanese game. I did enjoy the original.

Yeah, the Japanese version was censored way before it was even released.

This makes WAY more sense than restricting map editing for some reason. To be honest I didn't even intend on using the map editing because the game and post-games of Disgaea are time consuming enough.
