Anybody else picking this up?

I played EDF:2017 to hell and back, so I will definitely look into this one.

Should arrive soon, hopefully the online co-op is worth the wait.

I'm a big EDF fan, so I'll be buying it soon. I'm not too excited to play it though, I just hope it'll be good enough to tide me over until EDF4 comes out.

Hell yea, I`m there. This is the only game I plan on buying this year.

The blurb on NSCX mentions that there are only 15 missions, though. Is that a typo? I`d prefer 50 smaller missions than 15 long ones.

It's only 15. Most are much longer than those in 2017. That being said, I burned through the game in a night on normal...though obviously most of the fun lies in Hard and Inferno, which offers an obscene amount of XP. Hard is quite a bit tougher than Normal, which is reflected in the 3x XP boost. Inferno is...well...Inferno. Unfortunately, the cheese of 2017 has been replaced with a rather serious tone with occasional jokes that mostly fall flat. Overall, good stuff. Not as pure as 2017, however.

Teammates that will revive you pretty much kill the tension.

Also, there's no goddamn manual with the 360 version.

Well thats not encouraging. Not sure if this is worth the 6-7000 yen...but still hard to resist. The improved achievements and weapon unlocking sounds good to me. Maybe I`ll get it used.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game. I found it worth the $40, but probably would have felt let down at full price. However, take my impressions with a grain of salt as I have only blazed through Normal. Hard is a significant bump in challenge and I imagine going through Inferno won't exactly be a speed run.

Also, the co-op enjoyment, especially local, cannot be understated.

Man, these levels are so long..

My copy should arrive in about 9 hours or so. I would have had it earlier but I chose EMS instead of FedEx.

Grabbing it tomorrow :)

I can't believe some of the reviews for this game, ex. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/07/earth ... on-review/

Some people really just don't get it, lol

I may have only watched the Giant Bomb Quick Look, but this looks like completely boring garbage. I know edf2017 was bad, but it came out ages ago and there was basically nothing else to buy on 360

From the same people who couldn't understand that fishing in Nier was much easier in a different location? I really can't take these guys seriously.

Damn, my copy is still not here. I guess EMS don't work on weekends. Should have gone with FedEx instead.

Bad news, the US version doesn't work on Japanese consoles.

The price of the Japanese version is pretty fucking high, I think I'll hold off.

That sucks...

I grabbed my copy this afternoon and will play with a buddy I have coming over tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

PS. GS and their habit of selling a game as "new" but opened by them to be put on display is fucking retarded. It this weren't the last copy in town that practice alone would have been enough for me to skip this today.

I went and bought the PS3 version, it's slightly cheaper even by FedEx, and I'll get it sooner.

Reportedly the online co-op matchmaking is shit, but private is perfectly fine. That said, anyone getting the PS3 version?

Impressions after playing through Normal, most of Hard, and a bit of Inferno.

-Spiders used to be (for me) the toughest enemy in 2017. Swarms coming at you was a helluva thing to watch. This time around the ticks seem to be the bane of my existence. They're not so bad on Normal, but Hard turns those suckers into little crawling death machines if you're not careful. Once Boomer Spiders show up those become target number one, even before giant Hectors and Mantis.

-Teammates with shotguns suck. They're great for pushing back the swarm, but love to shove one right up your ass when blowing up a hive. That being said, they do a great job of reviving you and actually carry effective weapons this time around.

-Co-op is pretty damn fun. I played local, so YMMV over the net.

-Small Hectors are quite a bit easier when you're not totally swarmed. The devs added a weak spot, but made dodging attacks much easier.

-No countryside or underground levels. I disliked the cave levels, but the countryside had some of the best missions.

-Ant hills now require a placed bomb. You can fire at them to temporarily close them, however. Understandable, as before you could pick them off with a Lysander or Cascade with relative impunity.

-I'm guessing this takes place at the same time as 2017? They make mention of Tokyo being leveled by walkers, which pretty much fits with what happened. Ya know, cuz story is so important.

Overall, tons of fun. It's more or less a refined 2017.

After playing through half of Normal (we were completely exhausted even before we started our session, but it was still lots of fun!), a few thoughts:

Pretty much what you said is spot on. I hate the ticks already on normal...

A few things only are different for me from what you said. I, for one, did like the cave missions, so I will miss them. The countryside ones, too, so I hope there is enough variance in the city missions so that they don't feel all the same...

I really like the different turrets/vehicles included in the game, they're fun to ride and really provide support.

I will definitely be playing through hard/inferno just like I did in 2017. Last time I checked, I had spent roughly 200 hours playing 2017.

Not bad an investment for a 20$ game!

Yea, this series is far greater than the sum of its parts.

Ended up caving in when I saw it at the store discounted. Haven't tried it yet but I'll fire it up here in a minute. Glad to hear there aren't any underground cave levels, those were a mess. Can't see shit, captain!

JPN 360 version has a manual, btw. Worth the extra 30 bucks! (fuckin strong yen...at least i get paid in yen and not dollars...)

Is this game like Lost Planet 2 where you play campaign mode with other people online? If the game is similar to LP2 I might buy.

Is it an actual manual or is it the controller diagram? According to the internet, only the US PS3 version has a manual.

First US X360 game I bought in ages, I don't know I bought this over the PS3 version.

Apart from the manual, aren't they exactly the same? Played this a little more, man, it's really good stuff.

Yea this game rules. Took a little getting used to after EDF 2017, but I've warmed up to it. Its strange seeing an EDF game with some polish to it. There's a few things I miss (the way bugs would go flying through the air after getting hit by a rocket), but there's so many improvements over the old games, it'll be hard going back.

I played 2017 first yesterday with friend at my house yesterday, I am very close to finishing Inferno, less than 10 levels left. Later we went to his house to cook out, and I got to play the new one co-op. We did the first few stages, where it has you play as each class. Those were pretty cool, each one plays different enough. But, my weapon type stears me toward a trooper. The city looks great! Lots of stuff to blow up and explore. The details are crazy, watching my friend run through barriers as a Heavy was neat. I liked how the levels played out, but it left no room for us to devise strategy of how to go about the level, which was one of the best parts of going through the harder levels in 2017 in co-op. Some of the parts where you hold a spot were pretty fun.
Later we played more co-op at his brothers house, there I tried some arrange levels with tier 5 characters. Some of those played out as rather fun battles actually. Maybe too many bosses though?
Not enough enemies on screen though. Sure there is usually enough stuff to shoot at, but it lacked the feeling of being overwhelmed. Sucks that they took out the underground levels all-together..
Not enough weapons because they are divided by class.. And the names are fucking stoopid, really fucking stoopid. VanSnaster.. That is not the name of an assault rifle. It's like a terrible porn name. And no army would ever put an ! in the name of their weapon. Dropped the ball on that one.
Seemed like fun, but I would like to spend some more time with it before really making up my mind.

I was thinking this too, but I`ve only played Normal so far and I expect things to require more planning and careful weapon/character selection on Hard and Inferno.

This is a great point. Part of the fun of the last game was being in an open, deserted area and noticing the entire horizon seems to be moving...then realizing that its hundreds of giant spiders and you`ve got about 15 seconds to think of something to do or its your ass. That tension is lacking from these new ones, especially since you can be revived.

Its still fun and technically impressive (to me at least, I dont really play any `next-gen` games), but I`m hoping things will get more interesting on harder difficulties.

Paid $40 (via amazon, no tax, free shipping) for my US copy. No manual, mad as shit about it as well but there's no fucking way I'd paid ~$90 ($80 + shipping, roughly $50 for a manual).
Just me though man.

I agree with many previous statements: not enough enemies (although cranking up the difficulty changes that) and I feel
the levels are a bit small and short

I`ve beaten Normal and Hard and things are definitely much more interesting on the harder difficulties and with better weapons unlocked. Shit gets pretty crazy and feels more like EDF to me.

The graphics and controls are improved and I think overall its the better game, but I do miss the huge enemies.

The leveling up and weapon unlocking is also better, but goddamn does it take a long time. I`m up to rank 6 with the tactical armor but it`ll take ages to max him out, not to mention the rest of the armors.

I maxed out the Tactical armor and, oddly enough, Inferno doesn't seem to ever get "easy". Even with the best weapons, armored spiders still take ages to kill and death is always a possibility. That being said, it's oddly fun to take down a giant Hector with a few Pesticide Missiles.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was a glitch. After a few times it finally hit me. The horde creatures throw friggin cars at you. Awesome.

Insects headbutting cars at me, giant bomb spiders and mantis battles, game is awesome.

Really good value for money too with the original campaign, remix and survival. Can't wait for a few of my mates to pick it up so we can get some co-op on.

If I thought 2017 was boring as hell, is there a chance I'll still like Insect Armageddon?
I really did want to like the game.
