Good 3DO games!

Post by EinhanderZwei »

3DO is often regarded as a masterpiece of shit, and it's not unfair - the price, the awkward controller, abundance of idiotic FMV titles and 9000 more reasons have dragged it to the ground while PS1 was kicking Nintendo's and Sega's asses. In general, damn, that was a funny console. I really miss all that gimmicky and shallow FMV games with cheesy acting and hot actresses! And in my opinion, it DID have decent games, so let's name as many as possible :D

My list:
- Quarantine (my #2 most favorite car combat game, period)
- Need For Speed (graphics blew my mind at the time)
- Killing Time (I actually find it decent)
- Star Control 2 (un-over-praisable game)
- Another World (see Star Control 2)
- Flashback (see Star Control 2)
- Gex (the first is the best)
- Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (regarded as one of the best ports)
- Wing Commander III (Mark Hamill FTW)
- Crime Patrol (true classic)
- Space Pirates (see Crime Patrol)
- Return Fire (considered to be the best of 3DO exclusives (despite being ported to PS1/PC))
- There was some weird FPS with wireframe graphics and (seemingly) sandbox map design... anyone remembers that?

I thought we were talking about the 3DO that developed for the PC (or are they one and the same)?

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 FTW.

Yeah, the company is the same - suddenly, 3DO Company - but I'm talking about their videogame console (incorrectly referred to as 'Panasonic 3DO' in my town)

Star Control 2
Road Rash
Icebreaker (can't believe no one mentioned this)
Return Fire
Total Eclipse
Battlesport
Gex

Gex and Total Eclipse were ported later but were originally only on the 3D0.

Incorrectly I'm afraid. Well, it looked arcade-esque but it's missing some key elements.

I think most would agree that the 3DO was ahead of its time; its concepts of having a disc-only system, multimedia console, and a library filled with 3D games transitioned to what we have today. Most of the 3DO's ports, with the exception of Gex, are unfortunately inferior at this point to later ports.

I've actually never heard anyone complain about the default Panasonic controller. It was obviously heavily influenced by the MD pad. I'm a fan of the smaller JP controller myself, and I think the ergonomic 6-button pad is great. Now, if we're talking about early controllers with problematic diagonals or the Goldstar controller, then those complaints are certainly warranted. LG had a reputation for poor quality in those days.

Anyway, I don't think the 3DO's library is all that impressive since there are no real standout games that sit close to my heart. All GamePro used to talk about in the day when they discussed the 3DO were Shock Wave and Return Fire, neither of which felt that interesting. Here are the titles I enjoy that haven't been mentioned:

Ballz The Director's Cut - the best and final version of Ballz; not amazing
Guardian War - a really solid map-based SRPG
Hell - a vivid PC adventure, although it doesn't really capture cyberpunk for me
Immercenary - a bizarre postmodern adventure FPS; preceded Last Ranker in having your rank displayed right in the HUD (sort of curious what the earliest games with realtime rank are)
Soccer Kid - the classic Euro sidescroller; this version has the highest res visuals amongst all the Soccer Kid versions, as well as movies and other benefits
Strahl - the only English port of the Mega-LD adventure—not to be confused with the UPL shooter, although the animation is worse than the SS port's, much the original's
Way of the Warrior - none of the 3DO's fighters are all that great but this one was the most well known exclusive and has quite a few secrets
-
Oyaji Hunter Mahjong - one of the first FMV mahjong games I can remember that originated on consoles; over the top as usual
Policenauts - an amazing adventure; IMO, many scenes look better than in the remakes
Sailormoon S - ironically, this game is the smoothest Sailor Moon fighter control-wise
Yu Yu Hakusho - feels like Sailormoon S, but here, it pales behind the SFC YYH installments

I dunno, I have a 3DO as well, and I still think it's a dog shit console. Almost (not all) that you listed have better ports on the PC , or at least comparable ports on other consoles. I'm kind of glad I have one for a few games, but it's mainly for the cheese factor (and porn games).

Here's a question I can only really ask here. Do you pronounce '3DO' as 'three dee OH' or 'THREE doh'? I've always felt the former, but my girlfriend seems certain it's the latter.

Best port of Star Blade also.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I haven't touched my 3DO in ages, but it's always been my guilty pleasure. It doesn't have a lot of great original games, but it's got solid PC ports in spades. My personal favourites include:

Alone in the Dark/Alone in the Dark 2
Another World (Out of This World)
D (short, but I love WARP)
Gex
Myst
Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed
Syndicate
Wing Commander III
Wolfenstein 3D (One of the best console ports)

Real 3DO Interactive Multiplayer?

On that subject, I hate the Goldstar 3DO. What a piece of rotten shit. Ejects the entire CD drive rather than the tray. Now the Panasonic FZ-10, that's where the quality lies.

SSF2T is missing some parallax (like FM-Towns Truxton 2) and has dumbed-down CPU AI. IINM there's less animation in the backgrounds. Samurai Shodown looks like it runs at half the Neo framerate.

Starblade (nearly as good as the PS1 version), Soccer Kid (superior to the SNES counterpart Kid Kleets, which seems to be missing levels), and Burning Soldier (Starblade style gameplay with FMV) are great. Scavenger 4/Novastorm is decent.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Forgot about Crash N' Burn which was really quite good. I've got a Panasonic FZ-1 and it's been an incredibly solid unit. I should crack it out and play it sometime soon ;)

High five. HoMM 2 and 3 are probably the best games (certainly the most charming) that 3DO ever published. I was really bummed when New World Computing went bankrupt.

It was actually better... the FVM had WAY more compression in the PSX version and even a bit choppier at times.

Ah that's the good one. Had it's own internal memory manager. A curious oversight missed by the other models.
