Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Buying a Voodoo 3 graphics card for a PC game that was released a couple of years before it, only for said graphics card to corrupt the textures and make the game look EVEN SHITTIER than the old graphics card you had before did. WTF? How does that work?

Manky carbonised breadcrumbs in butter. O, would that you degenerates had but one neck!
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Horror entertainment that doesn't understand the value of the unknown. Replaying Doom 3 now, and enjoying the opening hours before eyebrow-raising occult terror takes a backseat to Doctor Wiley, the man behind the plan! I wonder what nefarious scheme he'll do next! Doom was always retarded, but invigoratingly so. Having a credible atmosphere undercut by clueless writing is just annoying.

All of my hate. I now understand that Shaft's reputation for vomiting out nothing but pretentious hipster bullshit is all too true.

When a known forum troll starts posting in a thread you are really involved in and none of the other posters let you know the guy is a total douche when they know it from the moment he pops up. Talk about wasting my time.

Saying the movie/videogame title only, while in fact you're talking about the latest sequel, not the original
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!

This is even more annoying when it happens because that's how they actually titled the new one. Offenders include Prince of Persia, Fast and Furious (oh wait, they took "the" out, so it's obviously a different movie), DmC: Devil May Cry, and Sonic the Hedgehog.EinhanderZwei wrote:Saying the movie/videogame title only, while in fact you're talking about the latest sequel, not the original

Self-styled "expert gamer" reviewers who play the "this game is hard and therefore badly designed" card without considering their own limitations. EGM's Shinobi (PS2) review comes to mind. I hope Europe enjoyed getting 2/3rds of the game a few months later because some drama queen had his feelings hurt.
Although Gamespot is the home of my favourite bad review ever (Silent Hill 2, the inexplicably surreal sequel to the charmingly mundane original), at least it didn't have an egotistical scrub write its review of the same title (it's actually very good).

Can you elaborate a bit, I seem to remember hearing the Japanese version was easier than the western release? Thanks.BIL wrote:Self-styled "expert gamer" reviewers who play the "this game is hard and therefore badly designed" card without considering their own limitations. It's a bit muddled - all three regions have different difficulty settings, but only the PAL one is actually easier. There used to be a brilliant FAQ covering this over at GameFAQs by a neoX, but it's disappeared seemingly along with its author.
The US version is the original, and has three difficulty tiers which must be completed sequentially: Normal, Hard and Super.
The JP version came next and has the same three tiers, but they're renamed Easy, Normal and Hard. You only have to unlock Hard. Hardcore Gaming 101 erroneously states this version is easier, much like people sometimes say Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition is easier than the original US release (it's not, you just start off one tier lower).
The PAL one's tiers looks superficially the same as the JP version, but it actually was made easier. IIRC, its highest difficulty is only equivalent to the second of the orginal three.
You know, come to think of it, EGM shed salty tears of frustration over DMC3 (US, original) as well.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Right cool, think I got all that. Sounds like Progear syndrome between the JP and US versions. Thanks for the info though, I didn't realise the PAL release was knocked down a notch. Personally I still found it pretty damn hard, but I had no comparison.BIL wrote:It's a bit muddled - all three regions have different difficulty settings, but only the PAL one is actually easier. This is the same Gamespot that fired a game reviewer for giving an honest review of Kane and Lynch, lol. Mainstream game reviews are completely useless. They don't even have a pretense of giving a fair review - it's openly admitted that game reviews are bought and paid for ahead of time.BIL wrote:Gamespot is the home of my favourite bad review ever

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
That's what makes the Shinobi one remarkable! He acknowledges it's a very tough game, but instead of taking this as some grave imposition in need of ironing out, he notes it's a game you're meant to refine your performance in, and one which gives you all the tools necessary. He doesn't skimp on its flaws either.Blackbird wrote:[This is the same Gamespot that fired a game reviewer for giving an honest review of Kane and Lynch, lol.
I would actually recommend that review to people thinking of picking Shinobi up, if I was somehow unable to communicate with them myself. Say, if I broke my jaw doing a diving headbutt onto my PS2 because stupid stupid hard games!!1.
The SH2 review is great because the guy complains it's not like the original, while pointing out it's exactly like the original, before revealing he didn't get the basic premise of the original and is comparing the sequel to a game that never existed. It's almost like the plot of a Silent Hill game.

Watching Discovery Channel where someone is talking in Japanese, only to be dubbed by a voice actor mimicking a Japanese English accent. How bloody stupid do they think we are?

When you tell your boss he made a mistake he says "Thanks for letting me know"
When he tells you you made a mistake you get sent in an office for a big rollocking.

So you don't think that they had Japanese voice actors who would speak the translations with a Japanese accent? Or was it that fake and obvious?emphatic wrote:Watching Discovery Channel where someone is talking in Japanese, only to be dubbed by a voice actor mimicking a Japanese English accent. Undamned is the leading English-speaking expert on the consolized UD-CPS2 because he's the one who made it.

Mind you, Rebecca (?) is supposed to be an American Chinese (!) lady, born in the U.S.A. "Gritty realism", don't you know.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Similarly, this trend in UK documentaries of subtitling anybody who happens to be speaking with a broad regional accent needs to fuck off and die up a tramp's urethra. It betrays a total contempt for both the viewer and the person being interviewed. We can deal with fucking accents, y'know?
