My Thought about Nintendo
NES is still their only system worth owning, sorry to say. SNES only had streetfighter 2, the conversion of which has been bettered, N64 had nothing, Gamecube is worthless in comparison to the PS2 and Xbox. It has nothing on the level of a better than perfect Dodonpachi Daioujou or Streetfighter 3: 3rd Strike (respectively) conversion.
Admit it.
Admit it.

I hate this.FatCobra wrote:And for all you Nintendo dissers, go to hell, because without Nintendo, you guys wouldn't be playing videogames today.
Nintendo didn't revitalize shit. PC gaming was still HUGELY popular during the supposed "crash" that never actually happened.
And Neon, I'd rather play any Mario game (excluding Sunshine) than DOJ. Considering the quality of the series, I don't see why that's so hard to believe. I've certainly gotten more play out of Mario 3 than Layer Section.
Not so much shocked about people, but people on this site who I thought would know better...sethsez wrote:Don Doko Don 1+2? Umihara Kawase Shun? Little Samson?
No, Yes, Yes.
And it's really funny to see someone acting shocked (shocked I say!) that people consider Mario a good series. I mean, come on.
"What, you mean there are people who actually like The Godfather? I must say, I am AMAZED."

Super Mario World has arguably better graphics than all those (even UKS which is PSX), otherwise I can't see how it can compare. The gameplay just isn't there. Even back when I was in elementary school I remember my best friend beating it with like 50 lives, and he sucked at videogames.

I've gone into that before, but my general complaint with World is that the level design just isn't as tight, or as varied, as Mario 3. The actual gameplay mechanics are better for sure (the cape rules), but the levels themselves just feel aimless, and often don't seem to actually take the mechanics into consideration (if I can just fly above 80% of the levels with no consequence, why bother having the level in the first place?).
Granted, the game does have some fantastic levels, but they're almost all hidden.
I can see why people like it, but it just isn't for me.

I might be alone here but I've always preferred the 16 bit Sonic series over the Mario series. The Sonic series, especially part 2, always showed innovative level design and great music. The music in the Mario series is usually completely forgettable.
The Sonic series was also a bit darker than the Mario series. You get to explore toxic waste plants and dark industrial places. The Sonics also had better characters.
Oh yeah and Genesis/megadrive>>>SNES
Nowadays we all look back on the SNES and see great japanese "rpgs" and not much else. We forget that there were other videogame genres out there and most of them were done better on the Genesis.

I'm half-tempted to dump that in with the "infinite credits make this game too easy" statement one hears frequently, and offer the same response, namely, if it's optional and you don't like it, then show a little self-control and don't use it.sethsez wrote:(if I can just fly above 80% of the levels with no consequence, why bother having the level in the first place?)
Right, but in my opinion that's closer to a shmup that gives you infinite bombs. Credits at least cost you money in the arcade, most worthwhile home shooters limit them, and both kill your score.
The cape is an integral part of the game. Many areas absolutely require it. So it seems a bit sloppy to include it with no limits or downsides whatsoever (kind of like the first Kirby, really).
For the record, I don't fly over any of the levels because if I was going to do that, I just wouldn't play period. My complaint is more about how the levels just seem to be put together with very little thought unless it's a ghost house or a castle. Kind of like Kirby, really.

Eh you guys do know about stereo vision that will be incorporated into the Revolution right?
Or perhaps they will cancel it after all and try to convince us they will release it as a seperate add-on or that they will bundle it with a game and then never will. they screw people over those Nintendo guys. Way back they got away with it, no more.

What this guy said.sjewkestheloon wrote:it makes me smile when people say that nintendo can't compete. true they don't have the majority market share but they turn out a hefty profit, and if i'm correct, i think that recently they actually have been making more profit than both sony and microsoft.
i still look to nintendo for some quality first party gaming. recently my love for mario 64 has been expanded ten fold. previously my 30 stars record (couldn't be arsed) has been expanded to 93 due to a portable format with an attractive backwards cmpatible console. i guess a lot of people see it the same way as i just outlined it. nintendo release very convenient and ammusing things.
just read that last paragraph back to myself and i'm not sure it makes sense. oh well take from it what you will
Yes, a 2D specific Nintendo home console would rock. But dummy mainstreamers would probably be confused by its prescence and just keep buying their portable systems mainly instead anyways.

And I love Mario 64 DS. Luigi and Yoshi added some unexpectedly killer replay value to that game. Chain-killing enemies using Yoshi's eggs is a treat. I also love how you can use Luigi's propeller backflip to get stars more easily in some parts than you would with Mario. Climb to the top of the huge snowman in the later snow level and you can use his propeller move to soar over the entire stage to get the star. Coolness.
I guess it really depends on your point of view.
My first console was an NES, so maybe that is why I am so fond of Nintendo. I never got the chance to try out Atari or Intellvision systems.
I don't know if the so-called "crash" happened or not, but Atari did do some very stupid mistakes that almost killed the market (E.T for 2600 anyone?).
Maybe Nintendo didn't revolutionize anything, I don't know, I all know is that they can make some good games. Will I be sad if Nintendo goes out of business? Sure, I will, but that doesn't mean I won't stop playing videogames. (Actually, I might, as my gaming hobby is slightly waning due to lack of faith and innovation, and I am beginning to pursue other hobbies. I'm currently into Xmods RC Cars at the moment.)
Am I a numbskill for liking Nintendo? Do I look like give a crap? NO!! Leave me alone while I play Meteos on my Nintendo DS!!
Maybe I'm not happy with console gaming at the moment.......

While I also consider the NES/Famicom Nintendo's best console, I don't completely agree with you. Can one (or two) game(s) make a system worth owning? Personally, I think so. It's the reason why I still play SNES (Super Mario Kart) and what prompted me to convert to the dark side and get a PlayStation 2.Neon wrote:NES is still their only system worth owning, sorry to say. SNES: Mystical Ninja, Super Tennis, Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Zelda III, Contra III, UN Squadron, Cybernator.
N64: Zelda OOT (only considered by many to be the best game of all time - nothing right?). Wave Race, 1080, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Golf, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Doom etc..
GC: F-Zero, Resi 0, 1 and 4 - worth owning the system for those games alone.
In fact, that didn't even deserve a reply. So I guess I'm the fool for doing so. Oh well.
Nintendo's major franchises (eg. Mario, Zelda, Metroid) do suck in 3D. The gameplay changes so considerably that I think the last Mario game made was Mario World back on the SNES/Famicom. Sure Metroid Prime was fun, but I didn't think of it as Metroid. It's kind of like Blizzard's World of War Craft, it's fun but it's not really a Warcraft game; just an off-shoot. Nintendo should definately stick to the 2D formula where most of their games have become legendary. When's the last time you heard someone say that Legend of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time was the game in that series? That rank usually falls to one of the older 2D titles. But hey, it's only my opinion right? It's not like Nintendo is going to listen to me.
Erm... pretty much all the time. When's the last time you heard someone say that Legend of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time was the game in that series?
I think Nintendo has pretty much given up trying to compete on an even level with Sony or MS, and are content to carve out their own little niche. Hardly an encouraging start for Revolution when the blurb for the new Resi announces a release for PS3 and X360 only is it? Still, might encourage them to go off on their own tangent and do some weird shit, which can only benefit those who crave something a little off the mainstream path I guess. Maybe the machine of choice for those coders looking for life after DC? Here's hoping for a mix of 2D, oddball Nintendo shit and the better of the current-gen stuff.
Nintendo are like the Rolling Stones, we know deep down they're past it, but they're having a ball and the world would be slightly less fun without them.
Depends on whether you've got a broad definition of what's worthwhile. I have highly strict standards and no patience for any bullshit quality games, or even merely decent ones. None of the SNES, N64, or most of the Gamecube games mentioned I'd have any desire to play...too busy with more worthwhile fare, I'd rather improve my scores in Garegga or Dragon Blaze (the list could go on...a LONG time). Resident Evil 4 has a chance of being good since I haven't played it and people say it's different from other RE games, but it's being ported to PS2. Oh well.Marc wrote:Damn that's a stupid comment.NES is still their only system worth owning, sorry to say. And of course people think Ocarina is teh best game evar oneoneone. It's what the magazines, and their Nintendo fetishes, tell them to think.

As much as I like to worship Nintendo and try to defend them at all costs, I have to admit that they ain't what they used to be. Then again, I get so sick of the mainstream path sometimes that it's good to go off the beaten path and play something weird and original. Who cares if they are the weird guys, sometimes the weirdest people are the coolest to hang out with.Marc wrote:Erm... pretty much all the time. When's the last time you heard someone say that Legend of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time was the game in that series?

I think Revolution will do somewhat well, if not just for the "virtual console" concept, and the ability to download their old games. Those NES and SNES batteries will not last forever, and I'm too scared to do SNES cartridge surgery with a solidering iron. But it's too soon to guess what will happen with the next-gen. Let's just wait and see.
