Well... i'm ready to be masacred(noob recomendation post XD)

Post by O. Van Bruce »

Well, i've recently jumped out of the Touhou shmup series: Have made an (almost) 1cc on Crimzon Clover Original (Ex boss killed my last 2 lives D:) and i'm playing Trouble witches.

As a fan of the Touhou Series, i like patterns a lot or at least, the sprites/bullets/etc. should be amazing(as in Crimzon Clover) or Beatiful (as in Trouble Witches). Ah, i've also played guwange and got powned, but i liked the "let's chase out mithical spirits" mood of that game, aside of the movement system...

So... can you recomend me some shmups for PC/emulation to start getting in this world? ^^U

The patterns are amazing and the bullets look awesome.
You won't chase out mythical spirits though. Just cats.

Let's not forget about the soundtrack. And the "what is this, I don't even" factor.

get MAME and try all the CAVE games.

Donpachi
DoDonpachi
ESPrade
Guwange
Dangun Feveron

I may be leaving some out...

Try these, they should be a good starting point. Touhou is OK, but there's a lot better out there.

There's so much available via emulation that you should have no trouble finding something you love.

I recommend Espgaluda, Batusgun, Battle Garegga, the Raiden Fighters games, and the SNES versions of Parodius Da and Gradius III.

I always forget that they got those games working in MAME. I still haven't gotten around to updating MAME cuz 2 of those 3 I can play on my 360.

Don't throw me anything that come to your mind so hastily... I would like to play ONE game at a time (mostly because i want to clear it and later, try to score).

I think i'll be playing HELLSINKER (though i've seen some gameplay and it doesn't seem that appealing, well, let's try, maybe it can surprise me).

Some other Shmup with great graphics and/or music?

I think i'm still not hardcore enough to play something as Gradius or very old NES shmups, though...

Gradius Gaiden (PS1, or PSP if you get Gradius Portable) is both one of the series' best and also one of its most accessible, and it looks/sounds fantastic as well with lots of imaginative stages and bosses. I'd suggest that one if you want to try out the series.

What?

I saw what you wrote about Gradius and suggested one that's representative of the classic games (unlike Gradius V), yet very forgiving and accessible (unlike most of the others). If you just don't want to play the series, that's fine, but they're not all fist-to-the-face impenetrable like Gradius III AC.

Just play DoDonpachi. and why on Earth would you associate NES games as being hardcore? The NES port of Gradius for example is way easier than the arcade version.

I have no idea why anybody would recommend Hellsinker to somebody who's just jumping into scrolling shooters. That game is esoteric as fuck.

Once you have the controls and mechanics down, it WILL surprise you. It's a truly unique experience.

Dragon Blaze will kick you into pretty good shape. Playing for score is really fun.

And don't try HELLSINKER unless it actually looks interesting to you. In my opinion it's pretty awesome, but other people shouldn't dictate your choices when you're starting out. As with every new poster, I'd suggest getting MAME and trying out every game that you can. If something catches your eye, no matter what the popular opinion of it is, then stick with it.

Agreed that doujins are pretty good. I'd go for Genetos, anything by x.x, nomltest, StellaVanity, and all of Kenta Cho's titles.
edit: Oh, and PriZhm.

And DOJ, but that's it.

You could also try Exceed3rd. It's very similiar to Touhou.

Recommendations:

DonPachi
DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou Black Label
Ketsui
Progear
Dimahoo (A Raizing game that's actually a little fun)
Gradius and Parodius series(don't bother with the ports, just play the Arcade versions as they're better than the ports are)
Darius Gaiden and Darius Gaiden Extra Version

Also, check out x.x's stuff specifically

Blue Wish Resurrection
Eden's Edge
Eden's Aegis

Also, check out some

Irem games (I don't think they're any good, but some people like them)
That Cho Ren Sha 68k game (even though I think it's pretty bad)
Batsugun and Batsugun Special
Raiden
Just find games you want to try, and see what you like best.

I would try out some games from each developer and see what you like best

Cave - Dodonpachi, Guwange, Esp.Ra.De, Ketsui, DDP DOJ
Raizing - Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid, Battle Garegga
Psikyo - Gunbird, Strikers 1945
Toaplan - Truxton, V-V, Batsugun
Compile - Zanac, Gunnac, Musha, Super Aleste
Grev - Border Down, Under Defeat, Strania, Senko no Ronde
Milestone - Chaos Field, Karous
Technosoft - Thunderforce series, Elemental Master, Hyper Duel

Some of my favorite developers. Cave has a lot more stuff that isn't MAME'able, but that should still be a good start.

Hope that helps!
