X2 / Project X2 Question

Post by Karlbert »

Hi all,

I have a question that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on.

Was X2 (developed by Team 17) ever released in the US (NTSC-U)? I'm sure I've heard somewhere that it was released under the name 'Project X2'. A quick look on the ESRB site also shows that it was rated and published by Acclaim under the name Project X2.

Has anyone got or ever seen an NTSC-U version?

Any insight would be much appreciated!

There is an NTSC-J release published by Capcom (the game's speed, damage and weapons were all rebalanced over the PAL original), but no NTSC-U/C release.

Not particularly, IMO...I wrote a few words about it in the PS1 Shmup Compendium on Racketboy.

Could be my impression, but I think the japanese version of X2 is more easy than european version.

It is easier, for the very reasons I listed above. Enemies take less time to destroy due to all weapons dealing greater damage, your ship also takes less damage when getting hit.

Archive.org has a full play of the game by Kiken (in fact the devs of the game commented on it saying it was too easy...did they know it was of the Japanese version?)

Acclaim was going to release Project X2 in the USA for the American PSX user base but dropped it like a hot potato. Thus it never got the proper "green light" to be distributed retail-wise Stateside.
