Delta's R13 Cerberus is not only badass-looking with its black canopy, red trim and scorching lightning cannon, it's also fun as hell to exploit the Anchor Force by plunging it into big targets for easy x2 bonus kills while you take care of business elsewhere. And it gets a disturbing BAD END as well!

Hell yes, the Rayforce + Raystorm ships are beautiful machine designs. I love the exaggerated weapon components - the RG-1's laser-firing "plumage" and the huge twin lightning generators on the RG-2. It's satisfying as hell to destroy stuff with those ships, they just look like sleek, expensive machines.

I didn't like Raycrisis's Waverider ships at all, though - too bizarre, although I guess it makes sense in that game's surreal context.

A great Taito ship design that never was is the Black Fly, from Metal Black. The illustration on the flyer looks incredibly stylish, like a space Corvette. In the actual game it's totally utilitarian and dull, although this in itself gives it a unique style. It also looked a lot more interesting on the OST cover, where it resembles a literal fly - not a fan of that iteration, again too weird for me.

This is what I love about manic games like the Strikers 1945 series - even though I haven't really played them all (just played II recently) they all use real ships. Even Battle Garegga's planes are inspired by real ones too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyūshū_J7W).

So, it's been 6 years since this thread last had a post. Since then there have been a multitude of new shmups (and ships) released. Anyone like any of the newer ships that have hit?

My favourite is still the golden oldie Solvalou. It's gonna take a lot to shift that classic of my top perch!
