So here's the basic rundown. I'm trying to move stuff from my VAIO (Running on Vista) to my old ass Windows 98 Gateway. Stuff like video drivers and game installation files. The problem is, whenever I copy these files from my VAIO to a disc, I insert the disk into the Gateway and click on My Computer. The CD contains no files...I bring it back to the VAIO and sure enough, they are on the CD.
I'm thinkin' it might have something to do with the fact that they are RAR files, and my current RAR version might only be meant for Vista.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Weird file problem. Please help.

Maybe the fact that Vista uses some new version of NTFS (?) file format and 98 uses FAT16?
I dunno.. just a totally random guess. I'm not a Windows user, but I know that when I transfer files between mac/pc that's the problem 90% of the time.

When copying them to a disc make sure you're burning it using a standard format. Legacy OSes such as Windows 98 won't read "UDF" discs which *might* be what you're burning them as by copying them to a disc using Windows Vista's default functions. If it's CDFS on the other hand (like normally) I'm not sure why it'd not be visible, and you may want to consider a USB drive or a replacement CD drive for copying files to.
Normally Windows 98 will be a bitch with USBs but when I was running legacy machines outside I found this and it came in very handy for modernised support. Might want to back up before you do such an installation though.

As a person who still uses Windows 98, I can attest to this. 98 won't be able to recognize certain sessions on multi-session discs and other special settings.

Would GoBack suffice? The program basically reverts the computer to a state before an accident or undesirable change occurred.I found this and it came in very handy for modernised support. Might want to back up before you do such an installation though.
I've never heard of a multi session disc, and I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what a session is.98 won't be able to recognize certain sessions on multi-session discs and other special settings.
Thanks guys. I should be getting a new USB file carrier sometime soon. Hopefully that will work.

Check in your disc burning software for a function that says "Close disc" or something similar.

I'm only going by Wikipedia's information for GoBack since I'm not familiar with it first hand, but it seems to have a few notable issues with unconventional setups - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoBackSiren2011 wrote:Would GoBack suffice? If you already have it and know it's worked previously with your setup I can't see it going wrong, but surely there must be a free alternative to backing up your Win98 setup (or at worst just doing a clean install if anything goes wrong anyway).
As for multi-session discs, I'm not familiar with them either though I've seen it be chosen by default as an option while burning with programs such as Nero. I think the idea is that you're able to burn additional files to the disc after the initial one-time-only usage but don't quote me on this as this is probably wrong. I never use it for compatibility reasons.
