Recommend me some STGs for the 360

Post by Bee Cool »

I have been cruising around ebay and other sites, looking at some games but I'm not sure what I should get. I'm sure many people here are more knowledgeable about the library of STGs on the 360 than me, so I'd figure I would ask you guys. I've been looking at DSIIX, Shiki III, and Radirgy Noa, I enjoy bullet hell shooters but I don't think I would mind a change of pace either.

My current library contains:

Espgaluda II
Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 (+BL DLC)
Ketsui EX
DOJ EX
DFK 1.5
DFK BL
Death Smiles
Muchi Muchi Pork
Pink Sweets
Raiden Fighters
Ikaruga
Bangai O Missile Fury

Thanks for your time. :D

Raiden IV comes to mind (change of pace indeed). Since the Japanese version is quite expensive (unlike the US one), you might want to try it out (as well as Raiden III and Shikigami no Shiro 1-2-3) on a PC before. DLC allows you to play Raiden IV as a fairy, which is not possible (thus far) with the coin-op version.
You can also get Shiki III for the Wii (localised US version) or the PC (official release, not the hacked ROM).

Only played a bit of it, but Akai Kitana Shin seemed like a pretty solid game

Strania: The Stella Machina on XBLA. It's an awesome mecha game by G.rev, and it only costs $10. It's probably my favorite non-Cave shooter on the 360, now that I think about it.

Guwange for XBLA. Since your list clearly consists of mostly new Cave games, have a go at one of their older and somewhat unconventional titles.

It's a mere 800 MS points and well worth the buy for having two separate modes besides Arcade.

Akai Katana Shin isn't bad at all. A bit easy though.

Eschatos is pretty amazing, imo

Been playing a lot of DFK Black Label lately. It's a lot of fun. Easily outclasses DFK 1.5, imo.

I'll keep eschatos in mind but from what I've seen I don't like the changing perspective.

The changing perspective is balls, but very infrequent and not that much of a hindrance when it does happen.

You'd be doing yourself an extreme disservice by not giving it a chance. The game is packed with modes, and Advanced scoring is actually pretty clever and very enjoyable. Even if you never touched the main game, Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins are both A+ shooters. I'd say Eschatos is a must-have for any good 360 shooter collection, and I'd place it above a number of Cave titles.

Eschatos is the real deal.

Don't buy Radiant Silvergun. It's not as perfect a title as you'd think - you'll inevitably be disappointed.

Buy Radiant Silvergun, so you can decide for yourself whether it's disappointing or not.

I already have Radiant Silvergun for my Saturn, but we are talking about the 360 library.

Based on your current library I would go with DSXII.

It's so much fun.

Shin Akai Katana is good but you have to be willing to get into it to really enjoy it. The visuals are awesome but first impression gameplay is rather stale. Once you figure out the system though, tons of fun!

Trouble Witches is legitimately really good. Don't let the copious amounts of loli fool you. The scoring system is a really great spin on bullet cancelling, and the shop mechanic is a nice touch.

+1 for Eschatos. I don't like the "all-or-nothing" scoring system of Original mode, but Advanced mode is pretty fun. Also THAT SOUNDTRACK

Am I the only one not impressed by Eschatos? It's as plain-vanilla shooter as you can get. Honestly there's nothing that separates it from the hordes of me-too vertical scrollers produced in the late 90s... and to be a 2011 title this is disappointing to say the least. There are scores of titles I would recommend on the 360 before Eschatos. I have it now, if only to be a completionist - but I rarely if ever play it.

To be honest, arent the dozen you have enough? Half of those would keep me busy for years, I cant imagine being able to put a lot of time into all 12, much less a few new ones. I guess if you want to own them all you could get the few people have mentioned, but you already have the essential ones. Everything after Muchi Pork and Futari is kind of down hill.

Since you seem to like Cave I'd say that Guwange and Akai Katana are must haves. I liked Deathsmiles 2X as well, but not nearly as much as the first, I'd put it at the bottom of the list for Cave 360 games while the first Deathsmiles is near the top.

Probably my favorite XBLA shmup. Needs more love :d The scoring system won't keep you addicted for long after you've achieved maximum end bonus, but reaching it is a very fun challenge as is just 1ccing.

The DLC is $5 and is even better than the main game, making both a must buy IMO. For more casual players the games netcode is great, I think it's a fun coop game to shoot through.

No love for shikigami III, I thought people found it to be a good game. I think I'm setting my sights on Death Smiles IIX because it's the cheapest option right now if I get it used, I'll probably also pickup Guwange when I get around to buying some points.
