Music Games?

Post by JJXB »

Anyone else here enjoy music games?
I've dabbled in a bit of stepmania but the main series I tend to like is the DJMax Portable series on PSP. the songs are catchy as anything and the gameplay seems balanced for the most part.
would play more if i could get my DDR mat for xbox hooked up to PC or get hold of a Beatmania IIDX controller.

Yeah, I played Stepmania a bit actually, I started to get rather good at it. Now that you mention it, I might give it another go...

I used to play Audiosurf, but I got bored of it because it was just... easy.

I suck using an actual mat or machine because I always miss the arrows with my feet :(

Does DJMax still do that thing where if you hit the wrong keys at the right time you get credit anyway?

I played the US edition but that kind of irritated me.

I played a lot of Beatmania IIDX back in the day, but I've mostly fallen out of the grooooooooove. Would really like to start playing Pop'n Music again, but I probably couldn't give it the time needed to justify the cost of a decent controller.

Although the frequency of play has been cut significantly nowadays, I still play a good bit of beatmaniaIIDX, pop'n music, DJMax Technika 2, and DDR. I get the odd play of Jubeat plus in whenever I can borrow an iPad.

We have a Stepmania arcade machine in town that's been neglected for a long time. I'm partially to blame for it :I

A bit. I adore Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents to death, and play a little Audiosurf sometimes.

And, of course, Bullet Philharmonic Orchestra, which still holds a very high spot on the list of best game names ever.

Also, it might not really count as a pure music game, as it's more of a rhythm/strategy game hybrid, but Patapon and its sequels for the PSP, where you control your little guys with drum beats.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Music games have taken the place for shmups these days for me, since its all my arcade has as shmups get no love there. They got DJMax Technika 2 a few months ago so I've been playing that a lot, otherwise DDR/ITG and Pop'n but I'm terrible at all those, and the ps2 IIDX ports for a few years now. And Audiosurf Ninja-mono, good times.

auto correct? that irritated me too. that's why i tend to stick to p2 or clazziquai since black square introduced the worst traits. most got removed in p3 but replaced with 2 worse button modes and 10/20 songs less.

In terms of simplistic music games, Frequency and Amplitude on the PS2 are some of my favorites. Getting into ones that require more skill, the Beatmania IIDX series is my favorite, hands down. I used to play it religiously and owned styles 3 through 11 imported on the PS2... I sort of fell out of it though when times got rough and I had to sell most of my collection. I should snag the US version and controller again at least, I've been getting the itch again.

I loved Frequency! It's been ages since I've played it. That DJ Q Bert track was sick.

Vib Ribbon (ps1) and Band Brothers (ds) are great, but my favorite has got to be Gitarooman.

is there a way to get IIDX controllers that don't cost a bomb?

The US version's controllers still sell on eBay for pretty cheap, if they're controller-only. There's at least one Buy It Now for under $40.

I don't get how the full packaged version has jumped so far up in price. I remember getting a bunch at Target for $30 each way back when.
