Motor Toon Grand Prix

Post by roushimsx »

Man, Motor Toon Grand Prix (US version, which is actually Motor Toon Grand Prix 2) is still pretty damn fun. Just popped it in last night for the hell of it and ended up recording a few videos to show off the courses. Really solid graphics (just think, this game is 9 years old!) and fun arcadey physics (unless you beat it on Expert and unlock the prototype Gran Turismo mode :) ).

Anyway, here's videos for Gulliver's House II and Haunted Castle (my favorite stages :D). If I get bored and hack out the cheat codes to unlock the Goodies then I'll record a video of the Gran Turismo mode (as you can tell from these videos, I certinally can't drive well enough to unlock it the fair way right now, and my gaming time is at a precious minimum these days; no point in dumping shit loads of time into one game if all I want to do is record a video for the benefit of the internet :( )

Videos are encoded in H264, so you'll need a compatible media player and/or codec. VideoLAN Client 0.8.2 will do you dandy, or you can just grab the latest ffdshow and watch it in anything you want. Or you could install the latest Quicktime. or something. H264 fucking rocks.

Yea, for being one of the rarest US-released games on the system, it sure is inexpensive. :)

I own both, and find 2 quite amusing. The first one was really too rough, almost a beta game, but the second one feels polished and the graphics are still very charming. I think it's too bad that Polyphony didn't find time to give this series another spin.

Actually, it's quite sad that some gems of the early psx period, like Motor Toon or the great Jumping Flash! are so forgotten.

The GT icons show on G4TV went as far back as polyphonys MTGP.

It was one of my favourite games on the PS1, the unlockables were very fun also.

Jumping flash also.. these games need a up to date sequel :D
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Hell, i'd settle for an Exact compilation of Jumping Flash 1, 2, and Ghost in the Shell. I'd rebuy 'em all over again if they came on one disc :(

Great games that never got enough love :(

Never played it, but now you guys make me want to hunt down a copy. Gran Turismo 1 isn't too shabby of a game either. The physics were realistic, but crazy and fast enough to be almost arcadey. Too bad the sequals went down a path of boredom and tedium.

I used to think the PS1 is a garbage system. What's the crap game to good game ratio for it? I know every system has it's good and bad, but whenever I dig through the PS1 wasteland at EB Games or Gamestop, all I see is crappy games that are better off used as ammo for a CD gun.

Still, it has it's gems......(R-Type Delta and Einhander, for example)

PSX widened the whole videogame market by a long shot. As a result, it has thousands of crap games. But, it also has hundreds of really great games. This means, going merely by number logic, that there has never been another system delivering so much good, at least since NES (and NES had its share of bad software).

But good is seen more easily on systems where it's concentrated in let's say fifty awesome titles, like the Snes.

To be devil's advocate, I could state the exact opposite: that all consoles in the end manage to gather an hundred or so of very good games (not true, but let's go with it for the sake of the argument), and PSX diluted its good hundred in tons of crap. It's a matter of perspective, really. But no large amount of crap should discourage you to try what good a system has to offer.

Of course, PSX works at best when you have the least prejudice possible, ie you appreciate many genres and you don't stick to jpn-only developers. If you're the kind of guy that is pleased to see Oddworld, Parappa, Herc's Adventures all together, you'll like it. If you tend to stick to a few hardcore genre, like, say, 2D fighting games, you already know a broad system like this doesn't fit your gamestyle.

The Xbox has the largest proportion of shit to good games according to all the reviews in Edge magazine.

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

Edge magazine told me you would say that and that I shouldn't listen to you.

Nuke all the crappy cartoon and movie games and get back to me on that one.

Every system has their good and bad games. Just pretend the bad ones don't exist.
