REZ - Dreamcast vs. PS2
REZ - Dreamcast vs. PS2
I've played the Dreamcast version quite a bit, are there any differences between the DC and PS2 versions? Is either preferable over the other?
play-asia has the JP PS2 version for $19.99 right now, seems like you couldn't really go wrong for that price.

From what I've heard, the import DC rev. looks a lot better. And while the PS2 version does have a higher frame-rate, I watched some Superplays of this game by Kiken a while back (don't have 'em anymore, and they're not up anymore, unfortunately), and the frame-rate in the DC rev. looks more then adequate to me-in other words, you're probably not going to see any incredible drops, or slowdown, or anything like that, in the DC rev.
The only version I wouldn't go for is the American PS2 port-just ridiculously expensive compared to all the other ports. I've also been told that the PAL DC version has some pretty bad glitches; even running on a PAL DC!

Import-friendly?
That Play-Asia deal is indeed very tempting - does anyone know if there is much dialogue/text in the game which would make the US version a better choice? Thanks for the tip, Nullsleep!

I believe it's basically a rumble pack that you can't hook up to a controller or anything else; just a box that vibrates along with the game. As for its "practical" uses, there's that one semi-infamous Game Girl article...subcons wrote:What exactly is the transvibrator? I've always wondered this but never bothered to ask.

the game autodetects the console's default language and displays all text in that language. it's entirely english-translated.bigbadboaz wrote:That Play-Asia deal is indeed very tempting - does anyone know if there is much dialogue/text in the game which would make the US version a better choice?

In fact the game doesn't have a single kanji in it, natively.dessgeega wrote:the game autodetects the console's default language and displays all text in that language. it's entirely english-translated.bigbadboaz wrote:That Play-Asia deal is indeed very tempting - does anyone know if there is much dialogue/text in the game which would make the US version a better choice?
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
If you can find the uS version get it, to support the companies here. if not then get the JP version for ps2. be sure and also grab a trance vibrator for your girlfriend while you play!
Yes, that is indeed the intended use for it. why else would they give you a waterproof pouch to keep it from getting wt and sticky when it's between your girlfriends legs?
The game itsel fis totally unchanged when it was brought to the USA. in fact the trance vibrator will work with the US one, as well as space channel 5.

I own both the Japanese ps2 version and the PAL Dreamcast version. The graphics are, in my opinion, much better looking in the DC version. If the trance vibrator doesn't interest you, and you don't mind paying a bit more for the PAL/Japanese DC version, I d'say you would be better off with the DC version. If price is an issue, and you're interested in the trance vibrator, go with the ps2 version. Basically, when I’m interested in playing the game, I play the DC version. Once in a while I will play the ps2 version because of the trance vibrator. Although, at that price, I would suggest getting both version.
Holy crap, subcons! What's up Shooters Corner vet? I got a trance vib a few months ago for my US version. It's not that big a deal, but I think that it adds something to the game. It is basically a mouse sized rumble pack that shakes to a different beat than the controller. Rez is still one of my all time faves....subcons wrote:What exactly is the transvibrator? I've owned the DC PAL version of this for years. Considering picking the JP PS2 version up anyways.
A couple of other differences -- the control on the PS2 is better with a controller, as the targeting reticle moves around faster and more smoothly. There are some combos I just can not get on the DC version.
On the other hand, the DC version also supports the DC mouse, which is supposedly the best control scheme for this game.

I like Orta too but not as much as Rez. I don't know how much time you put into Rez, but I think it gets better the more you play it. Rez really is all about mastering the game, first it seems like random button mashing, but getting 100% and unlocking everything requires skill, it took some serious playtime for me to get the good endingsprofessor ganson wrote:I like the music and graphics-- indeed this is the only game soundtrack I own, but the gameplay seems to me a bit mediocre. And this is coming from someone who LOVES Panzer Dragoon Orta.visuatrox wrote: Excellent game I must say

But then even though Rez and Orta have pretty close game mechanics, they still have very different atmospheres.. so I guess it comes down to personal taste and preference too. Rez is trippy with simplistic graphics, Orta is almost like the opposite

I'd say that PDO is a more complex game, what with switching between three different dragon forms, managing your gene upgrades, and being able to rotate 360 degrees. Rez is much more simplistic. Just lock on and fire, bomb in a pinch.
Both games look great, play great, and I love them both to pieces. You could spend years mastering either one.
(I own the JPS2 version of Rez, haven't played any of the others. I have no complaints.)

Ha! Soldat. I remember you. Is that thread still going over at GameFAQs?Soldato J wrote:Holy crap, subcons! What's up Shooters Corner vet? I got a trance vib a few months ago for my US version. Well, I've already got the DC with an official rumble pack. Plus I've got my save with all my unlockables on it--not everything unlocked of course. Guess I'll just stick with what I've got.
Speaking of which, has anyone completely beat this game? It's damn hard to get some of the stuff.

i'd personally say the PS2 version for 2 reasons:
1. the awkward placement of the DC's joystick. :/
2. there's about a one-second break between transcending into the next Layer and encountering enemies. in the DC version, it seemed like they were coming at you before you could even see past the blurry transition. x_X
that, and accessibility, though if you live in the UK (i'm from the US of Suck,) your odds are probably slightly better at finding either version, vs. the US PS2-only version being hard as fucking hell to find. x_x

Oh yeah, I also seem to recall that the PS2 version has a cooler effect for opening the network layer access cubes than the DC version does.
Regarding the comments above about the gameplay, I don't think Rez is really about the gameplay, it's about the experience. I love the game, but then again I also love the music (c'mon... it's got a track by Tsuyoshi on there!!) and Kandinsky (whom the game is dedicated to), so I'm sure mileage varies.

The DC version looks better and I also found to be more challenging, anyone else notice this that has played both? In the PS2 version I couldn't die, then when I played DC version I was actually having trouble on the first boss, and that's when I learned how to actually play the game (reacting instead of attacking like Panzer Dragoon).
