S.T.U.N. Runner coming at last on new Midway AC.

Post by Super Laydock »

Fans of the great S.T.U.N. Runner arcade game may be be happy to hear that game seems to be getting a port to consoles at last.
After being announced for Midway Arcade Treasures 2 and getting of the list of that compilation, it returns again for the line/up of part 3 of the compilation series.

Full (so far) list of games on the compilation is:

# Badlands™
# Hydro Thunder®
# Off Road Thunder: Mud, Sweat 'N Gears™
# Race Drivin'®
# San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition™
# San Francisco Rush 2049™
# S.T.U.N. Runner™
# Super Off Road™ & Bonus Tracks Pack

All racing games and some pretty good ones too. Shame I allready got SFR 2049 (GREAT!), Hydro T and Super Off Road (well somewhere on the attic), but STUN Runner alone makes me want this collection.

That collection sounds pretty impressive. Midway has always made some fun arcade racers.

I suspected as much when they cancelled it from Volume 2 for no good reason. Well, now it's just a matter of waiting and hoping they don't screw up the port!

So is this collection going to be all racing/driving games?

Only 8 games? Surely there will be some more additions to that list. Badlands and STUN Runner have me sold on it already.

Hopefully they'll add Marble Madness 2 and Danger Express to this. When a long buried prototype surfaces in some $20 compilation, it's a great thing.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Meh, the pack sounds rather average to me. Lots of new stuff but I've never gotten into Midway's racers.

A lot of those games are pretty complex and advanced. They'll require full on 100% porting, which is time consuming as a mofo. It'd be nice if any current generation consoles were capable of emulating the Quicksilver II and Denver platforms, but even top of the line PCs can't handle them, let alone $150 consoles.

If those are the only games included and they're all ported 1:1, then i won't complain a gosh darn bit. I've been wanting a perfect home port of STUN Runner for quite a long time, and after the abortions that were the Dreamcast ports of San Fran Rush and Hydro Thunder, I can't wait for quality console ports of those too (IIRC the PC port of HydroThunder was pretty damn good, but considering the arcade hardware was basically a PC, that doesn't really count :) I recall the N64 version not sucking, though)

please don't dick up the control and physics,

(hey, i like Virtua Racing Flat Out a lot, but it really does feel more like Daytona USA with Virtua Racing's tracks than Virtua Racing on PS2)

?!

SFR2049 for the Dreamcast was leaps and bounds better than the arcade version, and is probably my favorite racer on the system (which is saying a lot).

In any case, this looks like a great compilation. Midway has always made fun racers, so a collection of them for what will probably be a budget price is fantastic.

sethsez is right... Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast is wonderful and the conversion was even personally overseen by the legendary Ed Logg himself!

You mean PSX, right? The DC got great ports of both games, but the PSX San Francisco Rush is terrible. N64 got some good San Fran Rush ports too.

I wonder if the Rush games and Hydro Thunder are going to be the N64 or Arcade verisons because those two verisons are very different beasts (N64 verisons had more stuff to do).

It would be pretty cool if they could stuff the Arcade verisons onto a PS2 DVD though.

I loved STUN Runner when I was a kid, and F-Zero X/GX seem to pay homage to it.

I admit that I haven't actually heard of most of those, so I had to do a bit of researching. San Francisco's look cool, I've been craving for a good arcade racer lately. But somebody explain to me the greatness that is S.T.U.N Runner, it doesn't look anything special from the screenshots and the idea didn't really open up.

When's this compilation coming out, anyway?
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I like Stun Runner becuase it's an extremely fun tunnel shooting and racing game that had very good graphics for the time. Think something somewhat akin to Torus Trooper, though a bit different.

I'm not impressed. You can already get two of those games, Hydro Thunder and San Francisco Rush, in near-perfect form on the Dreamcast. And the ports of these games to this new Midway collection may not end up being as good.

I'm very excited!
I own the Dreamcast ports of Hydro Thunder, and SFR2049(awesome game!)
However, I don't own a "legit" version of Off Road (I've always loved it. The NES version was the best)
Race Drivin could be cool, and I'm sure that I'll like SFR The Rock. I played it breifly, and thought it was cool enough, but not better than 2049!!!

Was 4 Wheel Thunder on the Dreamcast a port of an arcade game? That one is cool too. FAST!!!

I'm definitely going to be anticipating it now!

Its a racer's dream compilation. I'm tired of "career type/ tuner racers", I want some instant arcade racing action!

Any word on what systems that will be available for? I'm not a huge racing game fan, but STUN Runner & Badlands have me sold as well.

I would expect it to hit all three systems, given that every other Midway game has.

I'm with you Twitch, I like my racing action 100% pure arcade! Last night I got a chance to play Outrun 2-best racing game I've ever played; especially in terms of graphics and control.

They will be released for the 3 main consoles. The XBOX version probably will be the best, if judging by previous "Treasure's". Also, the XBOX has input for 4 controllers, so that would make playing Super Off-Road a blast with a few friends. (8 bit versions used a "Four Score" adapter, and the SNES was an endless 1/ 2 player afair) This one could be it, as long as they do it right!

Also, I do love those career/tuner racers...its just that I can get burned out on em after a while.

Gran Turismo is like the Final Fantasy of RPG's, but sometimes you just want to pick a car and race as in OutRun 2.

Actually, the GameCube version of Treasure's 1 is the best (though only slightly better than the Xbox one) and the second GCN Treasure's is so slightly inferior to the Xbox version, it's not even worth mentioning. IGN's review of Treasures 2 that rated the GCN one slightly lower for minor glitches is lame. BTW, the GCN has 4 controller ports too. I'm not trying to start a system debate, but I wanted to clear things up to people who would be mislead by misinformation. You can't go wrong with either the GCN or Xbox versions, though you may want to get a special controller for the GCN one, though I'm quite used to the normal controller.

IF I remember rightly, the DC version was a completely re-written game that had nothing at all in common with it's coin-op counterpart. I think it was a finished game that Midway simply bought up and slapped the name on. Cool game though. The arcade 4-wheel was good simple fun, an seein as it's never been converted, I'll buy the pack for that alone.

I was a little disappointed when I heard about the compilation being all racing games a while back, but now that I've seen the line up, I'm pleased again.
