Games with no end

Post by FatCobra »

What do you guys think of games where you are supposed to create or take care of something (games like Simcity, the Sims or the upcoming Nintendogs). You know, these games don't have a definite end to them. Where the goal is not to win, but to "create" something and constantly maintain it.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like playing games that have a definite end (i.e a final boss, or the ending credits). I guess that's the old school gaming that is permentally wired into my brain. I have to "beat" games. I understand the point of games like Simcity and Nintendogs. You can't beat them, for there is no definite ending.

Note that this is different than replay value. We're talking about games where the ultimate goal is to get to the end.

I might get Nintendogs, only because I love dogs and can't own a real one at the moment........

Or maybe it's not old-school enough. What was the last boss of Galaga, again?

Never had a Dreamcast, never got the chance to play it...... :?

Come to think of it, these "god games" are a nice break from zapping space aliens and killing monsters by the dozen.

You could completely ignore the main quest and still get tons of gameplay.

Exactly! Most of the games that I was weaned on had no end. Breakout, Pac-man, Missle Command, all the old school shit went till you couldn't hang anymore :P :P

SimCity 2000, Theme Park, Theme Hospital, The Sims, Beach Life.

Five games I wasted years of my life with, and I have no regrets doing so. The fun is in the creation and the maintenance, and watching something you've lovingly crafted grow. Yes, some of them have stages and some definite goals, but there's always Sandbox Mode ;)

Yes, but how many people get there, or even aspire to do so?

I've put about 200 hours into Shining Soul 2. Since there is nothing to stop me from playing the old areas over and over again, I just keep leveling up. Diablo was the same way with the different difficulty modes.

This is what keeps me playing online games - there is no end, the only real end is if you can't improve your skills while others surpass you. Fortunately I've only played three games /seriously/ online, and I've not hit that wall yet. I've put nearly 400 hours into Midnight Club 3 already, and I'm still finding ways to be faster. It's no longer about being good enough to beat anyone, it's about how much by, or how handicapped I can make myself by way of using slow cars and still win. There is no end.

I loved that game. Too bad I had to get rid of it to help pay a bill, but I'll get another copy eventually. I just liked the fact you could be an axe-wielding dragon that could take alot of punishment and had really bad breath. It's also pretty funny being a WHITE Ninja. I guess that's really stealthy if you're in snow. Although Shining Soul 2 does end. You beat the final boss and see the credits. That's a game with an end. Of course, there's the advanced mode and the ability to get to level 200, but that's also an end as well.

Now that I think of it, alot of games I play have an ending, but the fun doesn't end there.

Well, most early ATARI 2600, 5200 games didn't have endings, but most people played them for the high scores.

I too prefer endings in games with a kick-ass final level badie..
