Is anyone here able, or does anyone know anyone who is able to do an N64 RGB mod for a price? I have 2 NTSC N64s. I don't know if either one is the correct model, but I'm guessing at least one of them is. I probably would not be able to have this done immediately, I just thought I ought to start looking. Alternatively, if the person can't mod one of my systems, I might be willing to buy one that's already modded. It needs to be able to output pure sync, if that matters.
If this is an inappropriate thing to ask, let me know.
N64 RGB mod
Re: N64 RGB mod
I can't help you with the actual modding (though I might possibly also be interested in having someone do such a mod), but...
Another thing that might be relevant: this GameSX wiki page claims that the required cable components depend on the mod performed... So, for instance, if you have a PAL SNES SCART cable, and the mod is done expecting a PAL Gamecube SCART cable or an NTSC SNES RGB cable, the mod might not work very well. Or perhaps it would work just fine - I honestly don't know enough about the RGB mod to know how important this is.
... this I can help you with, or at least point you in the right direction. Take a look a the serial number on the bottom of your N64s, and compare it with this list of serials per revision. If your serial is within the range of serials for NTSC revisions NUS-CPU-01 through NUS-CPU-04, it should be feasible to have your system RGB modded.lalilulelo wrote:I have 2 NTSC N64s. If I'm reading the above link right, NTSC revisions NUS-CPU-01 through NUS-CPU-03 already output composite sync, although it's on a different pin on the A/V port than composite video. I believe this means you'd have to get a modded cable, as standard cables use composite video for sync. NUS-CPU-04 needs a mod to get composite sync, as it's apparently still present somewhere, but not hooked up.It needs to be able to output pure sync, if that matters.

Re: N64 RGB mod
Neither of my serials are listed, but judging by the order in which they're listed, I'm guessing one of them is a NUS-CPU-04.
The cable isn't very important. I have 2 different Super Famicom cables already, each of which is wired differently. Besides, they're really cheap, so if neither of the ones I have work, I could just buy another one. I could even modify one of the cables I have if necessary.
The monitor I have (actually I don't have it yet, it's on it's way) doesn't support composite sync, just pure sync. I don't really understand the difference other than I assume composite sync has a composite video signal included in it. My Super Famicom apparently outputs pure sync.
One thing I forgot to mention: I've read that sometimes, when a RGB mod is done, the picture will look dim or washed out. Supposedly you can fix this by installing an amplifier. I would like to have that done as part of the mod as well, depending on how much extra it would cost.

Re: N64 RGB mod
It's my understanding (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!) that composite sync is pure sync. It's the s in RGBs, and is called composite because it's a combination of horizontal and vertical sync signals. Other kinds of sync signals include sync on composite video (which is confusingly not the same thing as composite sync), split horizontal & vertical sync (aka the HV in RGBHV, used by standard VGA), and sync on green (aka the s in RGsB, used by Playstation 2 VGA adapters).lalilulelo wrote:The monitor I have (actually I don't have it yet, it's on it's way) doesn't support composite sync, just pure sync. Yes it does, on pin 3 (composite sync) according to the wiki page. I believe most cables use pin 9 (composite video) for sync, though. The official Japanese RGB cable (SHVC-010) uses composite video for sync, anyway. My Super Famicom apparently outputs pure sync.
My apologies if I'm derailing the thread. I'll shut up now.

Re: N64 RGB mod
I'd really help you out, but by the time & costs required to ship the console over here and back, you'll find someone else that is in your vicinity.

Re: N64 RGB mod
I see. I was beginning to think that was the case, too. So what do you call a type of RGB signal that includes composite video in the sync lead?
And by the way, I'm in the US.

Re: N64 RGB mod
I think you are getting confused between composite video for sync, which simply strips the sync information from the composite video output (this is what 99% of SCART cables use) and pure composite sync (much rarer, but much nicer on things like the XRGB3, not needed in a lot of cases though).
If you need pure sync on your N64 I think you need this mod:- http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/nintendo/rgbntsc.htm
