Re: STGT'11 planning thread
Both Raiden Fighters games we played at STGT were rendered nearly unplayable for me, because of graphical glitches. Thunder Dragon 2 had similar emulation issues. (Layer priorities, etc.) Battle Garegga with all its secrets was also a particularly terrible choice for STGT.sikraiken wrote:Which games were a problem?
From past STGTs, Air Gallet and Varth both were nice choices. (Thunder Dragon 2 would have been another one had it not been for the aforementioned emulation issues.) Few people had played them much, and they were fun to compete in.sikraiken wrote:What is a game or two that you think fits this criteria?
I'm not sure how well they're emulated, but the Vasaras seem to fit, too.
I understand that some people might easily be bored by the lack of a deeper scoring system, but keep in mind that the existence of one always gives veteran players a huge headstart, which makes it very frustrating for mediocre players like me, because it feels pointless even trying to compete. No matter what the game, players like you or Icarus would always be at the top of a list where players like me are somewhere in the middle, and I'm actually totally fine with that, but I'd rather lose because of my lack of skills than because I haven't played the game at hand for months already. There's only so much catching-up you can possibly do in a week.
For me, the most joy in STGT is discovering unknown or underplayed games via a friendly competition, not watching experts showing off their accumulated experience with one game or another. Even if it makes absolutely no difference for the final placements, it feels like much more fun if there's at least the illusion of a level playing field.

This man speaks wise words. While we're at it, If I ever have to play Cyvern again I will disembowel myself on camera. If we really want to go for obscure STGs, why not something like Vasara? The Coop wrote:NO DANGUN FUCKING FEVERON.

Re: STGT'11 planning thread
Whether we go with pre-choosing or voting, there might be a temptation to throw in more than one Cave game (as in STGT '08). Resist, I beg--there's a diversity of interesting stuff to choose from.
Others are doing it, so I'll throw out a few recommendations. Forgotten Worlds, Mahou Keibitai Gun Hohki, Sexy Parodius, and Gunbird 2 would all be fine choices, IMO.

Any reason for that particular Parodius? I'd probably suck at any of them though, and I've only spent much time on Parodius DA!
But Gradius III (Arcade version) would be the traditional hori I'd most like to see. And that's not just because it's the one I've practiced the most from the traditional horis, but because it's mostly an amazing game.
And yeah, either 0 or 1 Cave game. I could see Ketsui being a nice choice for this because DonPachi and DoDonPachi series chaining is terrible.

Gradius III Arcade, also known as Ragequit Week.
No, that's one of the games that should be kept as far away as fucking possible. From everything.

Ragequit week would be Gradius IV. That game has some awful balance.

Though, no matter what the week is actually named, every week in STGT becomes Ragequit week sooner or later.

Re: STGT'11 planning thread
I was being serious about Darius Gaiden. I would totally play All Stages, and I don't think I'm the only one.
I would play Gradius IV, but it still doesn't work right in MAME, does it? I'd also like to see more Psikyo, but I think we should start with one of the earlier games (Sengoku Ace and Gunbird). I still wouldn't mind no-cats-main-game-only-final-dangun-feveron, just so we never have to play that game ever again.
As for "no CAVE"... We still have things like Donpachi (unless you count that weird "online shmeet" back in 2005 with the tiers and everything) and Esprade; these two, when combined with something like Espgaluda, all seem like really good picks for a weekly tourney. We now have DOJBL, definitely a better (and, in a way, easier) game than DDP; even if it is technically harder, it's still not as ridiculous as Ketsui (yes, I'd rather play DDP over Ketsui most of the time).

Im very much a cat person and I agree with you cats and shmups dont mix.Despatche wrote:there's nothing more in dangun feveron to play except for like, no cats
though no cats would actually be GOOD btw
Im down with Esp Galuda aswell, theres all those newly emulated Cave games, we gotta pick one of them for STG surly
Personally I wouldnt mind a Twinbee game, ive been meaning to do some bell juggling for a while now.
Re: STGT'11 planning thread
After that incident that I had with Mars Matrix last year, I might have to deflect to another shootan team.

Dragon Blaze is awesome, but it was played way back in STGT '06.RNGmaster wrote:What about Dragon Blaze? More interesting scoring IMHO.
I think Sexy's mission objectives might make it better for a scoring competition than the more straightforward DA! and Goku. But I'd love to play any of them, really.Chaos Phoenixma wrote:Any reason for that particular Parodius?

Re: STGT'11 planning thread
I haven't participated in STGT before, but I'd like to give it a shot. I'm not the best when it comes to scoring, but if I buckle down and focus, I tend to have a lot of endurance.
As for suggestions, perhaps Dimahoo. Not sure how good that would play out though, since the scoring system is all sorts of whack.
Could someone post a list of the past STGT games?

Last year was my first time and I'm not good at scoring. But I had alot of fun. Was a little afraid that maybe someone think I was uber noob and just plain bad. Perhaps add a note that Dangun Feveron 2008 was Caravan mode, and 2010 was normal mode.

Are only games that are emulated in MAME in consideration? For accesibility I would understand if that's the case. But if not I think that Futari (preferably Original) would be a good choice.

They did a nonMAME before. But if it's not available to almost everyone, it's not an option. And there's a lot of easily emulated stuff outside of MAME.

Shouldn't it be all about giving people incentive to play lesser known shmups?
My suggestions: Zanac Special Version, caravan modes of Seirei Senshi Spriggan, Vulgus, Battle Formula, Pippols.
