How to refresh video input in Vista?

Post by Daigohji »

I'm currently using my 37" Panasonic HDTV as my primary PC monitor. I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable to connect it to the DVI output of my Geforce 9800GTX+ graphics card and typically have the video output set to 60Hz at my TV's native resolution, 1080p.

This setup works fine except for one annoying problem. If I switch the TV to a different channel while the PC is on, when I switch it back it won't pick up the PC's video signal again, unless I reboot. This doesn't happen with any other device I have hooked up (consoles, DVD, VCR, etc). This means that I can't do anything else with my TV while my PC is busy rendering, downloading, uploading, etc. I'm guessing that there's some element of the video signal that is only being transmitted when the PC first boots up or switches to a different resolution.

Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut in Vista that would let me refresh the video output; ie. get it to notify the TV that there is a video signal going through? Is there another way around this? Switching to VGA isn't an option, as my TV doesn't support anything close to 1920 x 1080 over VGA.

Any help appreciated.

Hmm I dunno if it's already in Vista, but on win7 hitting "windows key + P" to switch output sources and back, could work. You could try if that key-combo does something in Vista.
Otherwise, there's always key-binding apps that could help you put something together.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it looks like Vista doesn't have that shortcut. Either that or the graphics card isn't recognising that command.

Hmm, that didn't work either. This is becoming annoying.

Do you have the option to move up to Windows 7?
Are you using the most up-to-date drivers from nvidia?
Does your TV have a VGA input?
Do you have another computer (or anything else with DVI or HDMI output) you could test the TV with?

what if you open a DOS/command window and then press ALT+ENTER to toggle full screen?
