STGT'11 planning thread

Post by dex »

With usual STGT time approaching fast, I would like to announce a couple things. Yes, I'll run it this year, or to be exact, will run the scoreboards, compute the results and run the registration threads. The game choice will be delegated to a couple people that I feel are better qualified to pick shmups (a couple because I want the selection to vary). With that most important tidbit of information out of the way, let's get to the other things:

Schedule
You might notice I'm starting this thread about two months earlier than in the preceding years. That is so everything is well thought out and well prepared. The registrations will start in 2 or 3 weeks and will take until the very start of STGT, which I am still not decided upon. On one hand, I feel that starting in the middle of July would be much better than the usual August timetable - on the other hand, the whole thing will collide with an SDA marathon if started early, which is significant, considering the amount of people from SDA likely to participate. That said, I am more partial to the 'middle of July' idea right now and it will probably stay that way.

Registration
Registrations should be open at least 3 weeks, by my estimates. Perhaps more, if I can stop being lazy earlier. As said, they will commence in 2-3 weeks. This time, in addition to using the old forum registration method, I might (and probably will) supply a method to submit registrations through a webform, letting captains register entire teams easily, for instance. Partly because I feel that's more convenient for the users, but also because it would be more convenient for me. As said, the old forum registration method would be open for people who wish to still use that.

Scoring
I see no reason to change the scoring method from last year. It's simple, fair, and easy to compute.

Game choice
Like I've said, I've already got a couple people to pick some games; if necessary, I will contact a few more.
I'm leaning towards pre-choosing because I feel voting never brings anything useful to the table, besides drama. Which I guess is kind of entertaining, but still not a good reason for the additional trouble it brings. Still, if a lot of people voice that they want voting back in this thread, then sure, why not.

Work to do
Scoreboards and registration will be done by me.

If someone wants to make banners (Zebra Airforce, anyone?), that would be pretty cool.

Suggestions
So, that's basically what I have to say. I know the plan is a little murky as of now, but that's because this time around, there's actually time to plan ahead, prepare, and maybe change a couple things. Which brings me to my next point: if you have an idea, question, suggestion, or opinion about how things should be done/improved this year, let me know in this thread.

That's all for now, expect updates here in the coming days/weeks.

I would appreciate starting in July.

Last year, it started the week that mine's and Aru-san's semester began, making it difficult for us to find time for the remaining weeks.

Wow, I had this exact line written down in my fake plans.

Middle of July is cool. Personally, I'd rather have the signups start now/in a few days, and the tournament starts at the end of June/beginning of July.

Third, I'd have way more time to play starting earlier.

Last year there was a bit of an issue over the cutoff time for scores, other than that I can't think of anything to change.

Sorry but middle of September also sucks balls because that's when most of players will be occupied with school including me to the point where I won't have time to play shmups for an entire schoolyear! So i'm up for mid-july start. Mid-august/mid-september starts? Hell no!

I know I'm in the minority, but I shall still state what I think again: I want voting back (with, say, three games to vote for each playing week), with the change that instead of every individual having a vote, every team has one vote, which the captaim PM's the person taking care of it. Voting can happen alongside playing, if we don't want to play only every other week. I did kind of like that, but since we start earlier in summer this time, it's not that bad to play weeks in a row.

Gotta drum up Team Sweden, now...

I vote for voting (team votes works too, as Kenny proposed).
I vote for mid-July.

Safest bet: Too close for comfort week (Espgaluda/Ketsui/DDP DOJ BL).

I'm ALL FOR doing this in mid-July instead of whenever we did it last year. I was so busy with school and life that I didn't get to play for more than 2-3 hours a week and it sucked. Mid-summer = no work = ability to play for 40+ hours in a week and still get my ass kicked by half the board.

LET'S DO THIS SHIT.

Also, if anyone wants the king of mediocrity on their team, PM me! WOO.

Another vote for mid-july. You can play game on vacation, you can't during school. Not that I'm in school, but some of my teammates had issues with it last year.

How about 25th of July? Assuming a five week schedule we'll end on 28th of August then, right before the busy time.

Five weeks, one game each week. It's both team based, and individualy ranked. Each week's score comes from where you had placed, top three scores in a team are added to their overall weekly score. Individual scoring tracks all weeks participated. There will be games you don't like, your spirit will be crushed by players that show up out of no where to dominate scores. We already know who is going to win. It's fun!
