Help me identify this early-mid-80s SF TV show

Post by greg »

OK, this is really reaching back into the past for me. I remember a short-lived TV show in which this family is driving a car into a pyramid (yeah, go figure) and they end up driving through some portal into a parallel dimension in which the ancient Egyptians ended up providing the dominant culture on the planet. Everything had pyramids everywhere and everything had Egyptian decor.

It's a longshot, but I figured maybe somebody else here may remember that show. I can't remember if it was a miniseries or a regular show. I remember Manimal, Automan, and Tales of the Gold Monkey. Just not the name of this show.

Sounds like a recipe for a new Twilight Zone episode from the late 1980s era (with a Stargate-ish type of vibe) or could it be a episode from the cool "Amazing Stories" anthology series perhaps? I do recall the short lived NBC produced TV sci-fi series "Misfits of Science" with a very young actress by the name of Courtney Cox (whom later starred in the Friends sitcom).

You might recall of the late 1980s short lived TV horror series, Nightmare Cafe -- that was a trippy series to watch as you didn't know what the three primary characters (including casting actor Robert Englund as top billing) were going to get themselves into.

The Knight Rider, Air Wolf & Street Hawk TV series from the early 1980s came from Glen Larson's production studio. Those were cool "high-tech vehicle" shows to watch back in the day. Even the short-lived TV series, Blue Thunder, tells of the further adventures of the high-tech helicopter and her crew...it got shot down/cancelled due to low Neilsen TV ratings -- the 1983 movie of the same name was much better IMO.

Y'know, I do remember watching an episode of what appears to be an typical American family of four in a land of Egyptains and interacting with them. I, too, forget what it was called. I think it was more of a 30 minute sitcom comedy show of some sorts filmed with a video camera (live action) and with canned laughter soundtrack added in -- got axed with the very low Neilsen ratings, of course.

Quick Google search came up with Otherworld which seems to have at least some of the elements you described.

Otherworld lasted for two months on the air in 1985. Definitely a short-lived one indeed. Makes me wonder whom of the big three American TV studios of 1980s that it aired on (NBC, ABC or CBS)?

Thanks for the heads up on the thread, I did respond to it and it's all good. Fox's upcoming Fall 2011 season sci-fi TV series, Terra Nova, looks promising.
