I see you took an even MORE minimalistic approach that I could. This is a neat alternative. :)

Baser levels of minimalism are the ideal. But IMO, you still need to capture the focus of the game. If the main goal is shooting, it's best to come up with some way to convey that.

Yeowch. Now that's just hard to look at. Simple shapes and colors are fine, but don't put in too many or you're missing the point of minimalism.

Why not just put a picture of Michael Jackson on there?

Tried Ikaruga again. This is a tough nut to crack!

Looks like people are having a good time with this little project. :D

Thoughts?

Better than the first one (Ikaruga ships just don't look like that by any stretch of anything; that's what was wrong with it), but not minimalistic enough. Too many elements. The stripe on the left-hand side looks like tacked on for purely decoratvie purposes, which is counter-minimalistic.

Loving the minimalist art. Thinking about the Ikaruga art, why dont you just use the ships siloette or a simplyfied version of it? For example heres mine for the forthcoming RS 360 remake

Awesome designs, especially the first one! Nice to see that Drunken Starsailor once agains proves to be nothing more than a inferior Icycalm clone.

I'm not saying these are great, but 50 years ago this stuff was considered state-of-the-art.
I was just about to post that one. Sitting right by me on my book shelf and it immediately came to mind when I opened the thread. Good luck Pixel_Outlaw, minimalist design is a tough one to pull off but it looks like your on your way! 8)

I've got a Japanese language book on Shmup algorithms that represents a whole load of common games using basic symbology (triangles, circles etc) - i assume to avoid any copyright issues etc but it's obvious which games each are for

will scan and post a few

I guess since this thread is at the top again I'll post an observation.

It seems that the subjects of the REAL minimalist covers are often incorrectly represented. Many times it seems like the artist hired for the cover is not familiar with the material. Now, if we consider the more recent "trendy" redesigns of games in minimalistic style the trend is to represent a single essential element of the game accurately.

In my first Ikaruga poster, I was going for the "hired but uninformed artist look".
The second I was going for the modern "take a single element or two from the video game".

Well, I hope that makes sense.

that book that i was talking about - not exactly what you are looking for, but it's still an awesome book :

Pretty obvious to see which games they are talking about (even though it's usually referenced in the text)

I actually like the designs, Pixel Outlaw, but I can't stand the filter you're using on all of them for that textured look.
