Metal Gear Solid HD

Games included: Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 and Peace Walker
Platform: 360 and PS3
Release: November 2011 (North America)/ February 2012 (Europe)

The Metal Gear Solid HD collection has been designed to run specifically on each system and will not use emulation. New features include: right analogue stick compatibility, rumble support, high quality sound, new art and trophy/achievement support.
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker will run in 1080p. 1 to 6 players will be supported just like the PSP version. Games saves are interchangable between the PS3 and PSP versions.
Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 are being remastered by "Bluepoint Games", the same studio who remastered the God of War collection. The games will run at 720p and 60fps. They will also both be fully widescreen and have additional effects.

Release date: 2012

Wow what a great announcement. I'm really looking forward to replaying these games remastered in HD. I am a bit confused though as to why Metal Gear Solid 1 is not included.

I'm more excited to see Silent Hill 2 getting a HD remake, but these will be nice. I hope they include some of the VR missions in the remakes, but I doubt we will see that.

Yeah, that's a good point - will all the bonus content from MGS2-3 be included?

Judging from the screenshots, those are straight ports rather than remakes (i.e. they use old assets to render the lot in higher resolution). If that's what you are after, PC ports of Silent Hill 2-3-4 already did that in resolutions much higher than the so-called HD.
I've got a hunch that MGS3 will be running at 30 fps at best (I didn't mind in on the PS2 as it was such a looker, but you know...) and I doubt Konami will restore the online. That it will look more sterile goes without saying, but this comes with the turf (not a problem with "clean" looking games like 1&2, but for my money the visual appeal of 3 was about something else - I bought a CRT TV for that game first and foremost). In my humble opinion 3 was one of games looking as good as they did partially because of the old TV's qualities.
What renders me most curious is whether ZOE2 (a painfully half-baked effort performing like a bitch in places) will have more accomplished feel to it. It was as if they spent a lot of time and money preparing the basics, then rushed the game design and optimisation to the point where it blew pretty hard in some respects. Graphically ZOE and ZOE2 are two games actually worth porting to systems ouputting hig resolutions. Same goes for the last gen cel-shaded Capcom games - it should be only for the better, if done well.

ZOE 2... Man I haven't played that game in so long. I can't wait for that to be released, but my only wish is that they lowered the health bar for bosses. Some fights just took way too long, doing the same thing over and over.

That's a severe case of underdevelopment. Instead of putting more effort in game design tweaks breaking the monotony, they watered it down like that. Regular combat isn't much better (the grab-spin-lock-on-throw sequence is so effective i used it all the time - that wouldn't be much of an issue if the meat of the action wasn't button-mashy in the wrong way (no requirement other than an enduring thumb). The final bossfight of Shinobi (PS2), where you also need plenty of patience and keep pressing the dash button, has more actual challenge to it as you must pay attention to your surroundings, avoid various attacks coming from multiple directions and have the current power level of your sword on your mind. In the most laborious part of ZOE2's final bossfight, button mashing makes you immune to the enemy's attacks and that's it. Coming from Konami, it was quite underwhelming.

I agree. The game's a killer, but the final boss disappointed me. I still don't know what did I do different in button mashing so I've killed him. Seemed like he was defeated by pure random

Well, this is a whole lotta great news at once.

Peace Walker was too good to be stuck on a hand held, and now more people will get to find that out. So, that's great.

Too bad they couldn't have stuck the Twin Snakes version of MGS on there, if they were too busy to re-do the first one.

The fact that any game pre-360 or PS3 looks like total garbage on a HD TV, seems to have made us excited about playing our old games again in HD. That's cool, and kind of sad at the same time.

Well, at least PW is new.

Hopefully these newer HD collections will play in a correct, non-stretched aspect ratio. I learned my lesson from the God of War 1-2 HD collection, and will carefully research any future HD makeovers before I purchase.

On the Bright side, Peace Walker is a PSP game so it should be 16:9 already. I should have mentioned that.

Agreed, I actually think the combat in ZOE1 is more polished and fun. Grabbing is overpowered (and necessary to use) in ZOE2 and the popcorn enemy swarms look cool but are just annoying to play. Played through both games on very hard recently after not playing them for many years.

Story and pacing wise I guess ZOE2 is better I guess. I used to think the first game was really bad for some reason.

Still, this is awesome. Also means that a possible ZOE3 will also be on 360 :D Definitely getting MGS HD as well.

Unfortunately, ZOE3 will probably be outsourced.

I couldn't care less about MGS. That series just never clicked with me for some reason.

However, the HD upgrade of both Zone of the Enders games is certainly a start. But unless they add some beefy extra content, I don't see myself forking up the clams for it, especially after I've explored every nook and cranny of both games already. The both of them gave me two incredible gaming experiences, though. And unfortunately, I can no longer tolerate playing through games which I've already throughly beaten for any purpose, nostalgia or otherwise. I also agree with whoever mentioned the gimmicky boss fights.

What was wrong with the aspect ratio in the God of War Collection? Only the UI assets were stretched.

It's possible that it may have extra content from a Japanese version of the game that was never released in America or something. Maybe I read wrong.

I'm excited about it since I never really got to play the MGS games. I bought MGS3 for my PS2 for practically nothing and liked what I played of it, but unfortunately I have a weird, crippled PS2 that doesn't recognize my memory card(s) for certain games(MGS3 being one of them) so I couldn't advance through it. :(

Chances are it was a fake or corrupt memory card. MGS3 is one of games refusing to save on third party cards (reportedly it can erase all data on them as well). I doubt it's your PS2's fault. Just get yourself a legit card while they are still around brand new and cheap. As a rule of thumb, if you can obtain first party accessories cheap and sealed so many years into a platform's lifecycle, it's wise to stock up.

That's the wild part, the card is a legit Sony made one from the store. I even had a friend come over with a few other legit cards he owned and it didn't work either. The same thing happens for Shadow of the Colossus, unless I fidget around with it till it saves. Then games like Viewtiful Joe 2 will notice the card but say it can't save on it. Not that I care too much, if I wanna play MGS I'll just get all of them at the same time with this. :P

Could have sworn I replied to this thread. Can someone confirm that I'm going insane.

ZoE's compilation is seriously a must buy. To be honest, I'll only be buying the ZoE collection for 2, I don't even remember what the first game had.

Oh, and I'll probably check out the MGS collection as Peace Walker can be played with a real controller, but I'm really not looking forward to playing through MGS2 again. It's actually the reason I bought a PS2. Oh well, at least there's MGS3, which I haven't touched, primarily because MGS2 was terrible.

But more importantly, the ICO and SotC collections now have a release date: September. I'm looking forward to these way more than anything else.

It seems like they're just remaking anything that was popular on the PS2. I'm half expecting Vice City + San Andreas, Gran Turismo 3 + 4, you know, stuff like that to receive the treatment. Persona 3 + 4 would be my first choice, but I feel hesitant in mentioning it, because the other titles seem much more likely.

HD my ass. More like upscaled, filtered and maybe fix some frame rate issues. Worst culprit is usually CG cutscenes which look crap upscaled. Playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma right now and the cutscenes look like crap compared to the new look.

Nintendo holds the rights to Twin Snakes, but Kojima was still allowed to release MGS1 for PSN.

Kojima would obviously be porting Twin Snakes instead of MGS1 itself, since Twin Snakes is 480p, so most of the work is already done, which means less time working, which means more time tweeting.

360 owners get to start with MGS2.

Perhaps it's subtle punishment from Kojima to the Microsoft crowd, but yeah, MGS2.

Actually, if you've avoided MGS1 for this long, it's your own fault.

Have you played God of War Collection? It's native HD at a locked 60fps with zero tearing. The same porting studio is handling MGS Collection (at least for 2 & 3, PW not sure.) Not sure about ZOE and SH either, though.

Either way, there is zero chance of them being upscaled. Any of them.
