Gravity Core PC Shooter

Post by Sui »

Hi All,

Wasn't aware of this forum until I read about it in Retro Gamer. I've been a massive fan of all kinds of shooters arcade games for many years - I fancy posting some reviews of my faves in the reviews section. Ikari Warriors is likely to be first, as that's my absolute #1 from seaside arcade days.

I developed a retro shooter for the PC some time ago. The first game I've completed and released on the 'net.

The game is in the spirit of games like Gravitar, Thrust and Oids though there's far more of a shoot-em-up element in Gravity Core than the first two.

Based on reviews and feedback I've had, the game is pretty universally regarded as tough and unforgiving. The controls are Asteroids-ish (although there's a gamepad / mouse option I added in a later version). Some patience is required to get to grips with the controls - you might crash a lot at first!

If you fancy a hardcore challenge, please have a bash and let me know what you think.

You can read about the game features and download the demo from here:

Gameplay is awesome with 360 controller, exactly what I'd hoped, but UI is hard to use with the analog sticks - needs control pad support for navigating. And switching back and forth from controller to mouse just to use UI is a pain.

Also, the text is difficult to read, I'm playing at 1680x1050. Might just need to be bigger, or a different font?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like the gameplay - some players find it too hard to get into.

I'll have to aim for a chunkier user interface with a more direct gamepad interface in future releases. I'd kinda backed myself into a corner with the UI. The original release had classic arcade key controls (Left, Right, Thrust, Retro) for the main gameplay and mouse / keys for menus. The campaign map really needs some kind of pointing device. Perhaps choosing a mission should be on its own screen, maybe even a minigame?

The font size thing is a fair comment. I originally released the game (a much more brutal version) in 2007, when monitors weren't as hi-res.

Cheers,
Gary

Yes. The first release was at the end of 2007 and was the finished article.

Have released updates since - mainly difficulty settings, alternate controls and graphical effects.

I'm working on a new game now. Will be a simpler game for free, hopefully released before the end of the year.

I'm on Twitter (@suisoftgames) if anyone wants to follow my ramblings.
