Videos of Taito Memories Joukan Games

Post by roushimsx »

so I've been playing this disc a lot recently (when I haven't been playing ChoroQ...what an underloved gem) and felt like recording some videos. Partially to show people what these games are like and partially to fuck around with AVC encoding.

So yea, if you're capable of viewing MP4 files (hint: get the latest FFDshow), enjoy these (and try 'em out in MAME!)

Intro

Elevator Action Returns
Growl
Light Brindger
Puchi Carat
Pu Li Ru La

..and then there's Rastan, to which time has not been kind. At all. 18 years after it's release, it's sure showing its age. Some neat ideas killed by bad control :(

I don't know, maybe it's cause I play it so much but Rastan's clunky control doesn't really bother me anymore. And I think the game still is fun after all this time. My friend and I have been trying to beat it lately. We can both get all the way up to the final stage but no continues are allowed on the last stage makes it really hard to practice.

Argh, I knew there'd be at least one person here that could play this game well :(

Kind of like Magician Lord, I guess. That game has its devoted fanbase even though it's got stiff control and is hard as balls for no real good reason. :)

But yea, I bought this pack for Elevator Action Returns more than anything, so it's all just bonus love for me :)

Elevator Action Returns is pure quality stuff man! The atmosphere of it reminds me of Rolling Thunder 2.

I think Rastan's control is pretty good, actually. I'm assuming that you take issue with the jumps, but the jumping scheme actually allows for a lot of variation in movment. The problem is that you don't always jump where you want to, but after a while you get the hang of it.

Still, I prefer the SMS version for playability (but not for fun).

That's odd. I never found Rastan's controls to be clunky. If you're looking for clunky controls, try the sequel. Rastan Saga 2 (Nastar) is an atrocity and doesn't deserve the name.

Jumping sword swings really pile up the damage on bosses, doing twice the damage.

I've gotten up to stage 5 with a score of 534,500. To avoid taking too much damage, you've got to zone the enemies.

The first boss with the 3-bladed Yari spear can be a pain in the ass- actually harder than the second and third bosses. The dragon from Stage 5 is a snap to kill.

Elevator Action Returns is still as great as ever. I've noticed a tad more slowdown in a few places (the Saturn has nearly none if any), but this could just be "wait" ported from the PCB.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Maybe clunky was the wrong choice of words to use. And yes, unfortunately I have played the horrible Rastan Saga II. But when I first played Rastan when I was younger the control felt different since I was used to controllable jumps. But after playing lots of Castlevania, that type of jumping control doesn't bother me anymore, and I invite the challenge it brings to the game. I'm getting closer and closer to a 1CC for Rastan. Can't wait to get home and try again.

P.S. Was gonna submit some scores for Metal Black and Darius Gaiden on the high score forums, but I used a rapid fire controller. I couldn't hang with Gaiden's slow rapid fire rate and I got tired from tapping to make faster bullet streams. >_<

Does anyone else use rapid fire controllers on these games or others and still submit scores?

When you install FFDshow, make sure you check the little boxes that say h264, x264. Video should work dandy then. :)

I checked them but still can't see anythin'. Ah wells, I'm not dying to see it since I have played the rom, but I wanted to know how the port turned out. I played the shizz out of Elevator Action on the GB and fondly await the Return.
