Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
Wasn't sure where to post this, but noticed on the game list for CAX 2011 that Ketsui in an Astro City is listed so I figured it had to be someone on here. Anyone else here going to the event? I know it's not the most shmup friendly event, still a pretty cool experience though. http://www.caextreme.org/
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
They list both Ketsui and Dolphin Blue in Astro City cabs. Most likely its the guy from LA who brought up the Sega swing cab last year (I forget his name right now).
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
If my vacation plans fall through, I'm really considering going out to CAX this year. Is it pretty cool?
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
If you are big into classics arcade and pinball, its definitely worth it.
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
Classics I'm into specific ones. Pinball you don't even know. Last trip I went to Vegas, I was at Pinball Hall of Fame for 21 hours over 3 days.

I dunno whom is bring in the Ketsui PCB on an Astro City cab to the 2011 California Extreme show/sale but it was I whom did bring in a DDP-DOJ PCB running on a fellow shmupper's Sega Swing candy cab setup for last year's 2010 CAX show. It was the first time that such a Cave arcade shmup PCB had ever been shown in the fourteen years of CAX's history since it's intial debut back in 1997.
One of the 2010 CAX's highlight was the hilarious Q&A session with the director/producer, Gordon Clark, of the 1983 film "Joysticks". Some interesting tidbits were revealed for the first time. It was mentioned that the film was shot on a low budget sum of $300,000 USD. Inital filming was done in a three week time frame with a rented out warehouse filled with plently of rented out arcade games back in 1982 and released nationwide in 1983. At the end of the initial filming, all arcade games were returned to their arcade distributors. Bally Midway MFG Co. was more than happy to showcase their latest Pac-Man arcade game of "Super Pac-Man" (as shown in the film) since Mr. Clark didn't have enough $$$ for IP rights to show off such arcade games. It took three days to film the famous nude scene with the beautiful Lola gal character playing the arcade game strip scene...the film crew couldn't get enough of watching her famous Playboy tits swinging around like crazy, Mr. Clark told the CAX audience. Got a personalized autographed DVD copy of Joysticks from Mr. Clark himself. ^_~
There'll definitely be another mystery Cave arcade shmup PCB shown at this year's upcoming 2011 CAX indeed...very last minute stuff, of course.
For caldwert,
The past CAX show have always showcased the newest Stern pinball machines if you're also into checking out the latest pins (just be prepared to wait your turn as it's always a big group surrounding such a new pinball table indeed).

I never got to play it. That game probably got more playtime than any other machine there. There were always people playing with more waiting to get on it every time I went to see if it was open. Will it be there again?

I can bring the ol' DDP-DOJ PCB again to the CAX 2011 show if you'd like to try it out -- it did, indeed, get many folks (both young & old) trying it out just for the "danmaku" novelity factor alone. Just wait your time patiently in line & you'll get the proper chance to try it out -- well worth the wait just to try it out on the original PCB hardware spec. The other "mystery" Cave arcade shmup PCB, as promised, is still on for the upcoming 2011 CAX show as well. Thank you for your interest in it.

That would be sweet! I think my best chance to play would be before the doors open. Or maybe the day before during set-up since I might be bringing a game also.
Looking forward to it! I cant wait to see what the other game is too.

I still remember playing DOJ and then some guy asking if he can join in. Without letting me answer, HE PRESSES 2P START. GOD DAMN. I left the machine right afterwards.
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
Looking forward to it! The old stuff only holds my interest for so long. Don't get me wrong, it's still fun to go all nostalgic but nice to have something I'd want in my house at CAX.

Oh there'll be, at the very least, an unprecedented four Cave PCB titles set on "Free Play" at this upcoming 2011 CAX show (compared to the single danmaku PCB title of DDP-DOJ at last year's CAX show). You'll be in for a very special treat.

Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
I was originally gonna just go for 1 day due to multiple cosplay-related things going on this weekend. However, after reconsidering things, I may end up going to CAX on both days.
EDIT: Never mind. It's gonna be Saturday only. Sorry, Dave!

I may actually check out one of the speakers this year:
Saturday, 12:00 Noon – Jim Whitehead, Professor and Chair of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz
“Shoot the Core: A Design History of 2D Space Shooters”

Oh well, make sure to write down the top Ketsui scores before you leave on Saturday so we can compare against Sunday.gs68 wrote:EDIT: Never mind. It's gonna be Saturday only. Sorry, Dave!

I'll be tweeting screenshots.
I've been practicing stages 1-3 and 1-4, but it appears my ability's declined a bit lately due to certain outside factors. At the least I'd like to consistently get to Stage 1-5 and 60 million.

Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
oops, haven't logged in here in a while. It's me bringing the ketsui. Also bringing dolphin blue, dragon blaze, twin bee yahoo, defender, scramble, heavy barrel, silent scope 2, and crossbow with the multi-exidy kit. I'm bringing a couple of backup jamma boards too, in case something dies...
the astro cabs are in fair shape, but the monitors are nice(dolphin blue is even high res). The sticks and buttons are pretty much brand new.
enjoy!

Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
Do you have the Ketsui fix rom? If not, your game is going to lock up pretty consistently when set on Free Play. Otherwise set it up with a credit button and free play turned off and everything should be fine.Low.Blow wrote:oops, haven't logged in here in a while. It's me bringing the ketsui.
Also please set continues to OFF, the last thing anyone wants to see is a 10 yr old kid who sucks ass credit feeding for a half hour through the entire game.
Thanks for bringing this!
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
No rom fix, but I have a credit button wired in. Continues off is a good idea. Normal difficulty? any other settings?Do you have the Ketsui fix rom? So who is gonna suck initially at Ketsui because he'll think that he's playing X-Mode?
I know I will.

Everything else normal/defaults is good.Low.Blow wrote:Continues off is a good idea. Normal difficulty? any other settings?
I just played about 10 rounds tonight, and only got to stage 4 once. I'm seriously out of practice. And stage 4 onward is all route memorization.Skyline wrote:So who is gonna suck initially at Ketsui
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
Man... Ketsui, Dolphin Blue, Twin Bee, and Heavy Barrel alone make this CAX worthwhile. While I have always enjoyed CAX in the past, its great to see more games from Japan every year and especially ones from the 83 - 95 era which is what I grew up with.
This is gonna be a fun weekend

I'm definitely looking forward to this. Last time I went several years back there was no Heavy Barrel. Playing something like that definitely brings me back to the early 90s. Need some Smash TV and Ikari Warriors too.
And I'll be on the lookout for Ketsui. And if I see Ray playing I'll be sure to join in with the second player because I know he loves it.

Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
The mystery Cave arcade shmup made it's debut on the first day of the 2011 CAX show -- it's none other than a Dodonpachi Dai Fukkatsu Ver. 1.5 PCB up and running on fellow shmupper gibbous's Astro City candy cab setup. Quite a bit of folks played DDP-DFK 1.5 including gs68, NOAH and some other fellow shmuppers...it was still up and running past the 2am Sunday morning shutdown time for the CAX show (I know this because I was the very last one to play it at that time. It was great to watch some highly skilled players show off their shmupping skillz.
Am looking forward to seeing Dave K. and other shmuppers on Sunday's CAX show.
To see Low.Blow's minature arcade cabs running Dragon Blaze & Yahoo Twinbee PCBs in person is cool. The RGB monitor that Drazon Blaze is running on is super razor sharp for it's overall 13"
Was a blast from the past to see/play the ol' Heavy Barrel PCB running on an Egret 29 candy cab setup, haven't seen/played this one since ages (back in the mid-1990s when it was at a local arcade hangout).

That little tube was incredibly vibrant and sharp, was surprised to see how many people played Dragon Blaze.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: To see Low.Blow's minature arcade cabs running Dragon Blaze & Yahoo Twinbee PCBs in person is cool. You should have seen some of the spectators while Ray played Ketsui, the cosplay only added to their reaction.
Surprise of the night in the game room for me was definitely the minty and dedicated Forgotten Worlds cabinet. I thought I'd never get the chance to play with the original press-down spinner.
Major thanks to PCEFX and gibbous for their donations to the event, it was great to finally play Ketsui and DFK.
Re: Alright, who's bringing Ketsui in an Astro City to CAX?
This was actually my first CAX, and it definitely won't be my last. Too much fun was had.
Managed a first-loop ALL on DFK Strong Mode, which came outta nowhere. Played so much Mushihimetama it wasn't funny, and yet still couldn't break past Stage 3-3, bah.
I think I play Ketsui too aggressively for my own good. D:
After PCEFX left with DFK, Hotdog Storm was a nice bonus.
Big thanks to those who supplied equipment, it was great meeting some of you folks and putting faces to names.
