Akai Katana — AC, AC Limited & X360 (Cave, 2010/2011)

Post by moozooh »

Akai Katana is Cave's fourth horizontal shooter, featuring never before seen elements such as massive slowdown and lots of bullets turning into gold! Only here you can get a battleship, or an armored train, or a tank thrown at you out of thin air by a giant flying person screaming unintelligible battle cries, all in a mind-boggling pseudo-3D perspective!

Also, the Xbox 360 port of this game has a free demo version available, which has all five modes and the first two stages available to play through in each, which is very generous. Go do that if you haven't yet.

Rules:
- single credit, no continues or restarts (except on 1st stage);
- difficulty, ship stock & bomb settings on default;
- demo scores are accepted for the time being (denote with "D" as in "ALL D" for a clear).

Re: Akai Katana — AC, AC Limited & X360 (Cave, 2010/2011)

Post by moozooh »

Releases/modes covered:
  1. Akai Katana (2010, ARC; 2011, X360). The current baseline version. The X360 port is region-locked. Screen format is 4:3.
  1. Akai Katana Novice (2011, X360).
  1. Akai Katana Shin (2011, X360). A more challenging version with deeper scoring mechanics involving an additional type of items and additional attack types. Screen format is 16:9.
  1. Akai Katana Shin Novice (2011, X360).
  1. Akai Katana Zetsu (2011, X360). A version of the vanilla mode with unlocked hit counter. Screen format is 16:9.
  1. Akai Katana Limited ver. White mode (2010, ARC). Exclusive PCB release for home use only. Rare and expensive. White mode is similar to Zetsu mode from the X360 port.
  1. Akai Katana Limited ver. Red mode (2010, ARC). A different mode of the Limited ver. PCB. Has vastly increased difficulty reminiscent of Ultra modes from Mushihimesama games.
Score submission format:

Code: Select all

Mode (define platform if playing vanilla version)
name - score - area - character
Example:

Code: Select all

Akai Katana - PCB
John Doe - 32,856,098 - stage 3 (boss) - type 2

Shin Novice
John Doe - 234,486,285 - ALL - Kikyou & Botan

It's also the first CAVE game to have a trial (which is going to be available soon). Perhaps have a small board for that as well?
EDIT: Oh whoops, I didn't read the 1st post.

Well, I do accept demo scores as said... If there are enough of them I can make a separate board(s), but I'm not seeing it very productive to scorerun the first two stages without actually purchasing the game. I intend them to be a filler until there is enough competition with the full modes.

Nice, keep em coming! I also added the rest of the boards, so they are all set now. I'll spruce the second post with links the same way I did with my DFK thread later.

Is that Shin mode, type 1? I've added a proper submission layout to the second post, please use it next time. A score and a video link is insufficient.

That run I did record it(to study mistakes), but I don't think it's important to upload it since the game is almost out. I really can't wait to see what SIN pulls out though. :)

Well, I just thought it would be interesting to see some high-level play since I won't be able to until something crops up on YouTube who knows when. I won't have the game for a long while. :\

I really hope there will be a different boards for each ship, because I can't see the other ships doing nearly as well as type 2.

Damn, I've just now realized how important it is to destroy things in Ninja mode with the defense shot, then reflect and herd as many bullets as possible while taking out larger enemies with attack shot... I've doubled my stage 1 score alone already, and should be able to hit 300mil once I get the swing of this tactic.

That's correct, enemy bullets are exactly what drives the hit counter, and also what makes gold and energy items larger, so you always need a lot around.
