No image on screen for Astro City cab?

Post by DirtyMonk »

Hey guys, it's been a long time. :D

Today I turned on my Astro City for the first time in at least 3-4 months, and I noticed there was no image on the screen, but I could hear the game playing on the speakers. I freaked out, of course, so I turned it off, and tried to troubleshoot the problem by switching PCBs, checking the JAMMA connectors and such, and came to the conclusion that it has something to do with the monitor.

After a few cycles of switching the cab on and off, the picture suddenly appears as though nothing happened! I end up keeping it on, and playing through several credits and everything works fine from there. That is, until I turned it off again.

When I immediately turn it on again, it's fine. It works and there is no distortion in the picture or any of that. The problem occurs when I leave it off for a while to cool down. I'll turn it on and then there's no image on the screen at all. It is only until I've turned it on and off about 3-4 times, that the picture returns. This is something that has started to happen today, so I'm not sure how it's going to be in the future.

The Astro is pretty old, but for the last few years, it's been kept in a warm, dry place wrapped in a comforter. It's been taken cared of, and there is no screen burn-in or anything like that. When I first bought it a few years ago, it would give off this high-pitched whine after about 5 minutes of gameplay, usually after finishing the 1st stage in a Cave shooter. And then after about 10 minutes, the whining would disappear.

I'm guessing this is pretty serious, and it might have something to do with the chassis or some wiring needing to be replaced. So what could be the problem? I'm ready to hear the worst.

Nice to see you back DirtyMonk. I'm sure you already checked all the connectors on the power supply, and connected to the monitor chassis. But it sounds like it *may* be the flyback on the monitor chassis (the large black square with two knobs on it...responsible for the high voltage for the monitor). Not sure there is anything you can do about it unfortunately, as I think you'll need the exact part. Maybe if you find a donor Nanao chassis that had something else go wrong with it could you salvage the flyback. Otherwise finding a replacement 27/29" chassis might be your only other option.

Wish I had better news.

Glad to be in touch with you again, Dave! The Astro sends its regards!

Yeah, I had a feeling that the flyback might have something to do with it, since you've mentioned that was the cause of that high pitched noise a few years back, which was just a symptom of its age.

I'm pretty sure everything's connected properly if the image managed to appear after a couple of tries of turning it off and on. I haven't fiddled with any of the wiring at all since I got it a while back. It still works fine when it works though, but could it just be a temporary problem? I was guessing this was because I hadn't turned on the monitor in so long, that it needed some time to "warm up" before working consistently again.

I'm curious about the cause of the problem. Is it just degradation? I realized today that you aren't supposed to plug monitors into wall sockets, and I've been doing that all this time (I unplug whenever I'm done playing, though), but I was wondering if that applies to this cab since they mentioned monitors and not cabs.

I'm sure the hard working parts on the monitor degrade over time, although I haven't had anything as harsh as that happen on my cabs (yet). Then again, I don't keep them off for an excessive period of time either, so perhaps it could be just a matter of keeping them running more often. Sounds like a good excuse to get back to work on your Ketsui score! :)

As for that advice on powering monitors, it only applies to older wooden cabinets from the 80's, which required an isolation transformer. These Japanese cabinets and monitors are perfectly fine running off your house mains, so no worries there.

I broke the neck tube on a 27/29" monitor last year. I replaced the monitor but kept the chassis in case I ever found anybody to sell/trade it to. We can try to see if it will work for you. I'm out of the country right now, but ill be home in 2 weeks. If you want, let me know and Ill post some pics and info. Btw, its just a 15khz chassis, no multi-sync.
