shmups contest draft style discussion

Post by Aguraki »

I've thought about the shmup tournament here(around september amirite?) and thought about changing the format or doing another one with new format.

In the original shmup tournament, captains chose their teams with no contraints and teams get completely disproportionnate, gathers of high levels friends leaving no chance to others.

I propose a competition with a draft style.
_Candidates submit their names.
_Captains are designated.
_Captains picks their team turn per turn.

This will allow more homogenic teams and more fun, since competition will be closer.
Also the draft is fun by itself, even if it can be a bit long and complex to organize.

Discuss :D

I think that might work well for another tournament, but my understanding was that STGT wasn't a genuine competition, so much as an excuse to have some fun with some friends, learn about some new games you might not have tried (Still loving Cyvern) and just generally work on your skills.
Look at our friendly members:

Competitive shmupping is about contest of individuals at heart. STGT is about broadening people's horizons. Co-op edition would be more like it as shmups can be more fun in co-op than most folks give them credit for, but this would be technically difficult to carry out.

well I didn't intend this to be a core competition, just a fun one with more equal teams with a little brag at the end, nothing more.
STGT is great but it's usually all best players in 1 or 2 teams and point system gets quite useless since teams strenght are so far.
The draft format can give small goals to even the lowest tiers players(like I am btw :P ) and bring some nice suspense I think.

I like obiwan co-op proposition though.
Actually I like any proposition,we can discuss about any format or random comp, there isn't only STGT right :)

I enjoyed last STGT as it got me to play some new games like Mars Matrix, also I allowed me to just enjoy playing for score without worrying about a 1CC as we only had a week to spend on each game.

As for changing the system I think it might be counter productive as those who are in the better teams will lose that element of teamwork and make it less fun for them.

Instead of changing the system I think players in mid to low tier teams just need to be realistic in their goals and not aim for 1st place instead to beat all the other teams that are about the same level.
How about adding a system where each team gets to pick 1 or 2 rival teams they can duke it out with?

we don't have to change STGT,we can make a new comp too.
A draft style is a system that by itself makes for more equals teams, since captain pick players round after round;not all good players in 1 super team, makes it for more challenge-)
Lower tier players will have a great role in their respective team too,as every team will have all range of players, hence every player contributing to the final score at his own level.

edit:gonna be out of this for a bit more responses, maybe something cool can come out of this :D

Realistically? No. In normal situations it would be more compelling to have to work to get your ranking. If you throw 6 great players on a team. Whats the point of even having teams if its for fun? Furthermore, whats the fun of dominating every game with the same 2 or 3 teams?

If i see the same 3 teams in the top 15 and I am playing competitively whats the point of even trying? The same can be said for lesser teams. The motivation to try, lessens.

I personally do not care. I am simply stating how competition sparks more interest vs domination.

Ive always felt that anything competative thats team based will always have 2 or 3 teams that tend to dominate over the others so this doesnt really bother me. Especially for the STGT as we have an individual leaderboard so that anyone with the talent can get to the top slot.

Imo the STGT will never be totally fair anyway since those the top scores will always be from players who have spent sometime with the game previously.
we don't have to change STGT,we can make a new comp too.
I fully support this as one yearly tournament just isnt enough and have often felt there could do with been an extra one or two mini comps. Unfortunatly (as im too lazy) it needs willing ppl to organise it as there is alot of data to process so they would have to use the automation tools use in STGT or program their own.

Have you ever thought about a doujin / PC shmup tourney? It would be a great way to get more ppl to try some shooters that arnt for Mame or Console.

Speaking of encouraging members to take part on the forums leaderboards It would be cool if someone could write a program to tally everyones scores from every leaderboard and use it to create seperate all encompassing shmups forum leaderboard and have seperate leaderboards for Cave games, Megadrive games and Doujin shooters. Out of curiosity would the programmes needed for such a thing be able to be intergrated into this forum?
