Perhaps it's in the readme? (that little file we usually don't bother read...)

At this rate I would just ask one of the mods to close this thread, call it a day and forget everything... End of the problems.

It's a shame that he feels this way. I'm very disappointed to learn that he has no intent to let us play the game at all. But it's his game and he has the right to control the distribution in any way he wants to, even if it means preventing some select groups of people from from playing it.

I still remain hopeful that the situation will turn around for the better. Until then, there are always other STGs to play.

hzt wrote:He said he's just going to ignore my post because we didn't read the explanation. I don't know what he's basing that on (because he read this thread and noticed some people have exchanged his ineffective anti-foreigner password privately?) or even what explanation he means if it's not the one in the thread, which is in Japanese so I don't know how he expects non-Japanese to...
I don't think he really has any plans to accept foreigners playing the game.
That's really fuckin' sad!
What were his exact words- it seems like such an extreme position to take, especially because everyone here thinks it's such a good game.

I'm certainly not going to stop playing this or try to stop anybody else playing this either, although that attitude has got me in all kinds of trouble before :D
And ethically where do we stand- could we have a hi score board for GwangeDash on this forum knowing that the game's author doesn't even want us to play it?
This is where that whole "intellectual property" argument kicks in- the author has made something brilliant which brings a lot of pleasure to people. It's his creation but does that mean that he has the right to withhold it from some people but give it to others on a completely arbritrary basis?

There were authors who asked their relatives to burn their works or bury them or worse, this includes very famous people like Franz Kafka.

Anyway, this got a bit tiresome so I'll just refrain from posting in the thread. There isn't much else to say I guess. What's still quite unclear is what specifically triggered the anger... The unwanted mirrors?

You're right- like Kubrick forbidding the screening of "Clockwork Orange".
And all the mirrors were removed within hours of the author's request (which was very courteous and written in English).
Maybe he's just having a joke or on some weird power trip- actually it has made this whole thing into some kind of puzzle game that we've had to unlock like the Crystal Fuckin' Maze or something.

I don't get the impression he is actually going to reconsider later though. I think maybe he is just kind of a dick, he mildly pissed off some people in the thread before by being a dick about deleting previous versions and telling people not to play them.
mjclark wrote:Ladies and Gentlemen we have now entered the world of post-modern gaming :D
So he's trying to blur the boundaries between playing/not playing a game and make us realise that the idea of what is a "game" is just a convenient social construction?

You may very well be right :D
However we might have the last laugh cos although v1.00 is copyrighted (giving us a legal obligation to abide by the author's request for no playing outside of japan and no mirrors),
v0.999 is copylefted which means that we are completely free to play, mirror and distribute this version as long as each subsequent distribution is also free !!!!
If we stick to v0.999 we are legally entitled to play, mirror and distribute at will so let's get a scoreboard going and the talented-but-racist author of GwangeDash will just have to suck it up :D :D

Cave had a video of the GwangeDash on Niconico deleted for copyright infringement so he decided to stop distributing the game. I honestly did not see that coming.

Wow-it's gone! The link 404s but luckily many of us still have copies eh?
This just keeps getting weirder- I totally understand the author's point now but where does that leave us?

Yeah, this is what he was worried about but I thought he was being a bit paranoid, mostly in Japan people don't seem to care about small scale doujin stuff. The notice about the video being deleted mentioned Daioujou specifically so I wonder if it's more to do with it straight up ripping off the scoring system (and Death Label)? Or is it just that Cave have a problem with doujin works in general? I've never heard that before though...

I don't think it excuses his whole anti-foreigner thing, as it seems obvious that any concerned companies like Cave are going to notice Japanese sites first, which is exactly what's happened.

Such a brilliant mash up of a shooter and such a shame the dev/devs have deceided to hold it back now from us in the west :( id just like to say thank you to them for there time&effort it is duly noted the work they have put into this title so far.

I would also like to say to the devs that you have a lot of followers of this title in the west, you just need to check youtube and forums like SHMUPS out for the recognition your game has received, maybe east west translations have been lost, but hopefully regained very soon.

Huh. First Streets of Rage Remake, now this.

Gonna have to keep circulating the tapes, I guess.

Message from the developer:

From now on there will be no development or distribution of GwangeDash.
It was to avoid a situation like this that I placed restrictions on its distribution.
On many of the versions, I attached an explantion that they were not to be downloaded except for debugging, but as you ignored that and shared links and copies with each other, I asked that you read my explanation.
I don't understand why that didn't get across to you.
If you have any respect for me, the developer, left, please ensure that the number of GwangeDash players does not increase any further.

I think the general reaction to this sad event could be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu2exZut-Y0

Well, I pulled down my replays of this game from Youtube. I know they are from older versions but better safe than sorry. But, ironically, this has happened because of NicoNico videos, right? (even more ironically, that's how I found about this game!) Maybe he could replace whatever ripped materials were with original ones (and the game already had a lot of original sprites put in) and perhaps re-renaming it... or starting a new, original project altogether. With all that code already done, maybe changing mechanics and such shouldn't be that hard? (maybe?)

But the moment you upload a link or something, it's already echoed automatically everywhere. Hell, I've found some old mediafire backup files I uploaded years ago archived somewhere else (when they only contained a scoreboard screenshot).

I'm torn. On the one hand, I want to respect the creator's wishes, on the other hand, it would be such a huge shame to not allow more people to play this gem.

Also, where was the aforementioned explanation about the downloads being for bug testing only even located? The download page?

1) Unfortunately I don't have a mirror for that version
2) The Copyleft is probably invalid since CAVE say that the game is violating their copyright
3) Fortunately we have PMs :D

The discussion on the 2ch board is carrying on frantically and CAVE were complaining about the bosses as far as I can make out though I'm sure someone ele could translate it more clearly.

This drama is getting more and more delicious.

The bosses were probably the most blatant rip-off, bullet patterns and all.

Wonder how much effort it would take to completely re-do the game removing all CAVE material?

Seriously but, how feasible would it be for someone else to reverse engineer that copylefted version and deCAVE it?
Presumably it would only need a cosmetic change to legitimise it. I'm not a lawyer but surely scoring mechanics and bullet patterns can't be subject to copyright.
And please make the gold bees into the carrots that they always wanted to be :D

If the bosses had different shapes, the bullet patterns would look silly/out of place anyway. Oops the boss is suddenly firing from nowhere near it's guns, etc.

I don't think you can copyright a bullet pattern, but it wouldn't hurt to come up with some original content anyway.

I have no clue about reverse engineering, judging from the general state of things, it's probably not the nicest game engine to start modding.

If anyone does this, it'd have to be the original developer, IMO.
