My score is nothing compared to some of you shmup geniuses in here, but I'm still super-proud of the score I just managed on my PAL copy of Deathsmiles, especially since I just nabbed the game two days ago:

12,996,698,820 - Sakura - ST 4-2 - EX - MBL 1.1

Cleared all six maps first (admittedly on Lv2, still learning!), went through the Ice Palace, then went into The Gorge even though I knew I wouldn't make it out the other end -- I was right. Just didn't make sense to get all that way and at least not go for The Gorge! Haha, didn't even get up to the Wyrms.

This shooter is amazing. I'm loving it more and more each time I start it up.
Just beginning my journey into this wonderful genre, can't believe what I've been missing all this time...

StreamofNath: I loved this game a lot too, but you should try out the other modes too, they are totally different (except for arcade and 360 modes, they are typically the same, so total of only four different modes)

1,912,796,505 - 5-1 (Double EX) - Follet - 360 (ARC)

Poor Follet, she died so many times because of me =X

Kay'. Thought I might as well submit a score I just got. I still have a lot of work to do with this one it seems. :)

129,122,657 - ZGK - ALL (No EX) - Rose - 360 (PAL)

I shoulda played this in score attack mode. I apparently would've claimed 3rd spot of Europe. Why not just have a global leaderboard Cave?

different game ids. If we had the same game id, we'd have the same leaderboards and 1,500 gamerscore possible for each region. Probably had to be done since Microsoft only allows 1,000 at launch. NA/PAL could have easily had the same leaderboard though if they hadn't screwed up the NA version at launch and didn't name the game for list purposes as Deathsmiles NA and just Deathsmiles.

Also, Zengeku score makes me want to spend some time soon trying to beat that. Now if only I could stop losing all my lives on the castle because suicide bullets are hard. I can get to the Castle on Death Mode with all my lives in stock on a good run, then I'll proceed to lose them all easily. Not sure if I could beat that without the suicide bullets though. Wish I could get that Volcano recharge right. My best is around 50 million on that stage, but usually it's a lot less. I don't know how 70-90 million is possible on it.

So I decided to play a random credit today after not touching the game for nearly a month and got the 1CC with Casper, which was cool. Not so cool was failing to beat my Rosa score by under a million points.

BUT! spadgy, if you could be really awesome and kind, I'd like to have my Casper score on the scoreboard instead... I'll still be in the same place so you wouldn't have to rearrange anything! And I'm so inconsistent I know I'm not going to be able to beat this any time soon.

hzt - 107,815,373 - All - Casper - 360

Hah. I haven't even gotten those recharges to work yet. Btw... What is your top score on While Label Deathsmiles?

Arcade mode
Weak Boson - 166,603,711 - 4-2 Boss (No EX) - Rosa - 360 (arc)

This was the first run I've managed a recharge in (the volcano). Watching Dan's replay was helpful but I'm still not entirely sure how it's supposed to work. Lots of room for improvement either way.

For me, even after 3.5 years on vanilla, i still cant manage a volcano recharge. They said something about leaving the familiar at the 5oclock position, but i cant get the idea.

Btw i noticed a lot of Rosa players. Show Casper some love people!

I don't even know what a volcano recharge is. I just feel good when I get all of my extends somehow by starting at the forest level and hitting Power mode at all those rocks.

And you guys have got better scores than me anyway so yeah. :P

Updated! You lot have been busy while I've been at the London Shmupmeet.

hzt - your Casper score is up.

StreamOfNath - Can you confirm which EX level you did on your run?

Great work on all the new scores people. One thing, can you all please follow the formatting rules as strickly as possible (See first post)?

spadgy: we've been busy so you have reasons to come back here to update. Please play Deathsmiles again, we wanna see how good you are too!

BpzeBanshee: A recharge is a technique in which you regain all 1000 items right after Power Up mode ends. Volcano Recharge is a massive exploit done at the part where the rock in the middle of the screen spews countless large rocks with a lot of flying eye monsters close by. By employing the correct but strict timing, you can actually Power Up twice in Volcano stage, which is one of the easiest and highest scoring stages.

Ah, cool! So I WAS doing something right getting something shocking in points from that floating rock after all! I'll definitely keep an eye out and try that out. Thanks! :D

Casper can powerup at the first rocks and keep going to the last even without a recharge. 8)
I don't know if it's possible to score as high like that though, the most I've got out of it is around 60mil, and I think you can get quite a lot more than that with for example Follet and a recharge. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to pull off the recharge and I suck at playing Follet anyway.

60 mils a bit short isn't it? I swear I hit both extends at that rock using Rosa. Can't replicate that event every time though so I'm gonna have to look through my replays to where I actually pulled it off.

Casper is special in this case as Kiki's skull-generating attack is her Shot. According to the game mechanics, each frame in the game reduces your item count by 1 in Power Up Mode. Shot or Laser will increase to 2 per frame, Homing and bomb by 4. All of these are stackable. Since other characters depend on Laser to get their familiars to use the skull-generating attack, their item counter drops faster.

This is again true if you just hold down your attack button, even as Casper.

And Rosa is just simply overpowered in Vanilla, although Casper beats Rosa in close-range damage. Add on how attractive Rosa is to majority of the players, the choice of character is obvious hehe

By the way, another score to add to the MBL list

2,629,069,888 - 5-2 BOSS (Ravine/Crystal Shrine) - Follet - 360 (NTSC-J)

Anyone knows the trick to deal with Jitterbug's second form in MBL? The up-and-down trick from Vanilla doesn't seem to work anymore!

388,923,276 - 4-1 (EX) - Follet - PCB (Vanilla)

Probably my last entry ever for Vanilla... I can't play a half decent game on the console without a Hori and I've gotten news that the PCB is gonna be replaced in the next morrow. Looking forward to see what iDeathsmiles can offer =D

3,069,181,967 - ALL CLEAR (Ravine/Crystal Temple) - Follet - 360 NTSC-J

Not a good run for the MBL...

A couple of scores from me:

Arcade mode
Weak Boson - 197,304,639 - ALL (No EX) - Rosa - 360 (arc)

Slight improvement. I was going to wait until I broke 200 million before I posted another score, but that's easier said than done.

Mega Black Label
Weak Boson - 1,051,355,780 - ALL (No EX) - Rosa - 360 (arc)

Could have been so much better if I hadn't died near the end of the castle. Still, I'm happy that I broke a billion. It's a shame there aren't more no EX scores for this.

All right, I'm gonna bump up my score a bit. I'm going to retire from DSMBL indefinitely as I have played this game to death. I recently move to another place and I am unable to connect to Xbox Live. I have the replay saved in my HDD.

Tyjet Poison - 6,310,191,362 - ALL EX (Canyon, Ice Palace) - Sakura - MBL 360 (NA Patched V1.02)

Path taken: Rail(lvl3) - Volcano(lvl999) - Forest(lvl3) - Graveyard(lvl999) - Town(lvl999) - swamp(lvl3) - Canyon - Ice - Castle

Thanks for specifying your route.
