I'm about one or two generations late for this kind of thing but for some reason the drum beat sounds really cool. I can see where freakshows like Empire of the Sun and Lady Gaga get their inspiration from (besides party drugs, of course).

Dug up a lot of Zuntata's oldies recently and I got pretty much (re)infected with 1990 VGM festival version of Captain Neo lately, such a good piece. OGR rules.

Great stuff. I like both tracks a lot - infection successful, mission accomplished.

I just discovered the eargasm that is The Mars Volta's Tremulant EP. I can't believe I've gone so long without paying attention to it.

Apparently this is a retouched version of a song from that album. I prefer it over the original because Cedric's vocals were so lazy in comparison to the newer one.

Also, a Deftones cover of "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The only Mike Patton song I have ever liked, because of his strong stage presence in the video. (I don't understand why everyone sucks his cock and considers him to be a music god. lol. I've heard plenty of vocalists who can wipe the floor with him.):

SNW was the last decent Deftones album. Then it all went downhill from there. I seriously doubt they'll ever recapture the essence that made them great in their heyday. This economy is a pimp that turns even the most passionate men into corporation pleasing, self-exploiting crackwhores. If they succumbed once, they'll gladly do it again. Deftones R.I.P. (1989-2006)

Wow, really? Saturday Night Wrist? That was the only album by them that I didn't like all that much. Being a huge Deftones fan, I find their first 3 albums to be their "hayday". They went a lot more ambient and pretty with their self-titled album, and even more so for SNW. To me, Diamond Eyes takes a step back towards what they should be doing.

I actually don't even see how you can compare the music they released durring their "hayday" and the music on SNW. If they ever did sell out, SNW was it. If you like their slower stuff, then more power to you. But, from my perspective, they are closer to their "hayday" then they have been since White Pony. Heck, Diamond Eyes is even more gritty in its timing and variance in tracks than White Pony, and in a lot of ways goes back to the days of Around the Fur and Adreneline, some of their best work.

Take your R.I.P and shove it sir, the deftones are far from dead.

Good point. The Deftones originally had some heavy stuff (which was fucking awesome) on Adrenaline and Around the Fur, but White Pony was a turning point for them as far as their style. They did indeed produce more "slower" tracks like Pink Maggot and Change (which, coincidentally was around the time that Chino conceptualized the fantastic side project known as Team Sleep, which is a fucking ambient/shoegaze playground.) but if you are in any way implying that this was a blunder for them, then I strongly disagree. They evolved in the best way the band saw fit, and made a triumphant return to their roots with their self-titled album (hello Bloody Cape and Hexagram /orgasm). I hold the Smashing Pumpkins and Slowdive directly responsible for their shift in musical priorities. Their influence on some of the Tones' later works is glaringly apparent.

I honestly can't say which style of theirs I prefer, because on one hand I've listened to White Pony and Team Sleep+demos so much that I can't stand any of their slower stuff anymore, and I'm starting to revisit their hardcore shit on the other. It takes me back to middle school when I first heard 7 Words and Bored and I was like, "holy shit, music is capable of being this good?" It was totally revolutionary stuff to me.

You make me want to give Diamond Eyes another listen. I was pissed off around that time when I first heard it, so to be fair, I probably hated everything back then. lol.

Did you hear their B-sides and Rarities CD? I swear to fucking God, no one can do covers as well as this band. Hearing "Savory" got me interested in Jawbox, and their cover of "Simple Man" made me actually enjoy a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. That takes skill. Bah, I could go on and on about that album, so I'll stop here. :)

And to be fair, there are some ridiculous songs that don't belong on Saturday Night Wrist at all (Pink Cellphone? WTF were you thinking, guys?!), but if you condense it to their slower/dreamy stuff like Cherry Waves, then you have a decent album.

For now, I take back that "R.I.P." until I can make a better assessment of their newest one.

And BTW, my favorite song they've ever done was "Be Quiet and Drive." That was my teenage anthem. "Digital Bath" comes in at second place.

EDIT: Yup. I will eat those words. This is a great album from what I've re-heard so far. I don't like the song Diamond Eyes, though I do love Rocket Skates.

I can totally understand liking the changes (no pun intended) made on white pony. They really did have 2 different styles that you could get attached to.

I actually don't really like the singles on diamond eyes, but rocket skates is freakin amazing.

I must say, you have some great tastes! Digital Bath is probably the song I have most listened to in my life. I freakin love that song!

I can't remember the song name, but track 3 on that album is bitchin too (on diamond eyes)

I actually had their B-Sides and Rarities, and it was stolen out of my car =( haven't seen a copy since, but that was such a great side release.

Awesome to meet a fellow deftones fan =) I would say, aside Tool, the deftones are my favorite band.

EDIT: Also, cherry waves was a great song. As a whole, I had a hard time getting into the album, but that track really stood out. Also, I really need to give some time to Team Sleep. I hate to say it, but I have heard very little of them.

PM me your mailing address. I'll send you a copy of their one and only album signed by Chino and the band themselves at a NYC show in 2006. You don't have to pay for shipping or anything, really. I'm just fortunate to have met a fellow Deftones fan.
I actually had their B-Sides and Rarities, and it was stolen out of my car =(

Those fuckers! This is a great opportunity to buy their recently released vinyl version of their B-sides, if you have a table. Maybe it was meant to be?
Digital Bath is probably the song I have most listened to in my life. I freakin love that song!
That sounds about right! I used to look up at the starry night sky when I left my play rehearsals, and this was what I always played on my Walkman (which I still own and listen to music on, BTW. I don't have an ipod.). Watching the music video (which was filmed mostly at night) makes me think of that.

Supposedly, "Digital Bath" is about a dream Chino had about finding this girl in his hotel room and killing her. "Your Skull is Red" by TS supposedly revolves around this same theme.

But I must warn you, my source is from posters on Song Meanings.com (wow, I just realized it's been AGES since I've been there), so it might be BS. :)

OMG, I would love a signed anything from them! I actually saw them the same year! You sure you don't want some paypal bucks for it? I'll PM ya my address either way =) Thanks a lot!

I didn't know b-sides was released on vinyl! Heck, I would've bought it even if I still had the cd, but now its a must.

I actually never looked up any song info on Digital Bath, but I always got the feeling that he was seducing, and then killing, some chick. I freaking love their old music videos (another reason I miss that b-sides)

I am actually in the same boat you are. I initially fell in love with their ambient-esk sound. That was all I really listened to of them, until I was kind of tired of it. Thats when I started listening heavily to Adreneline, and fell in love with them all over again. I think its time to revisit my roots with some Team Sleep.

Oh yeah, was listening to Diamond Eyes on the way to work this morning, and track 9, I think its called Risk, is fucking awesome. It feels like it touches both their ambient and hardcore roots. Also had to listen to sextape. Not traditionally slow for them, but such a sexy song. Ha ha.
