Updated. Welcome to the new entrants, and well done to all of you!

Second place now hey powersoul!? Awesome! One more place to go!

(Also - sorry for the slovenly pace of the update this time; I've been away from life for a long week at a very busy work trip in San Francisco).

Updated again, mainly to welcome my workmate BanjoTed to the forum and to the scoreboard.

Good work mate. Once you've started making progress like you have you'll find yourself getting better at an accelerated rate.

However, the update is also to fix some embarrasing formatting errors left in from my update a few hours ago; errors that I prepared as a welcoming gift for BanjoTed... honest...

Vanilla Deathsmiles

dan76 - 232,005,068 - ALL (no EX) - Follette - 360 (arcade)

Been a while - slight improvement. No photo, but the replay is up on the PAL leaderboards.
Time to man up and face the suicide bullets. After playing so long without them it seems a real spike in difficulty...

Frenzied at work now (so posting on the forums?!), but I'll add an update soonish,

Got this game a couple of days ago when it popped up at my local JB Hifi store.

Been playing Arcade mode whenever cause I wanted to play it as originally intended and boy oh boy have my scores been twinfolding.

First I got some pathetic 1.5 million or something from learning2play and not getting killed et al.
Then I thought I did really well when I got 35 million and something the other day, then I found this thread and went O_O
After chatting about such to my friend who's also bought this game about it I managed to get some 55 million points.
And finally after pointing out some safespots on the B-1 boss to a friend I racked up:

BPzeBanshee - 73,603,625 - 4-1 (didnt pick canyon, final stage?) - Rosa - 360 (Arcade mode)

I was amazed, man. Got both of my extends in the first two levels. Didn't think I'd grow to like this game but I have. :D

Welcome BPzeBanshee. One of the greatest things about this game is the big jumps you can make with each new credit.

Updated you and Dan76's scores.

Dan - I've been trying to do that 'instant refill' trick on the Volcano stage. I've managed it once - next time we're at the arcade I need to badger you for some more tips.

[edit: removed original score, see below]

Not much of a score but it is my first 1CC of anything ever (that I remember) so I thought I should post it. Playing Rosa after only playing Casper before makes the game feel much easier but I'm sure I can score better with Casper.

Edit: I tried again and got a better score this time. Pretty happy with breaking 100 milllion.

hzt - 108,382,43 - All - Rosa - 360 (Arcade mode)

Wow hzt, that's pretty neat! I haven't been able to get past the first half of the Hades Castle stage and haven't beaten my 73 million score either (though I came close to it and got further in the stage than before the other day).
Casper's a pain to use IMO, her attack looks cool being Death Magic and all but is just too weak to really get anywhere for me, and I'm too used to Rosa's inverted mechanics regarding the familiar too.

Thanks man. Keep working on the castle, it's not too bad once you figure where you want to power up and get a consistent route through it. I got to Jitterbug with 4 lives the second time. (Then made a stupid mistake, panicked, forgot all my strategies, and just barely beat Tyrannosatan with one life left.) I'm sure you'll be able to beat my score soon.

Casper does a lot more damage if you hit enemies with the base of her laser before it splits in two. Still kind of a pain, but I like getting close to enemies anyway, and I like moving fast when I use shot.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I'll have to have another go at Casper sometime knowing that, but I'm willing to bet Rosa's more powerful still. I'm sure there's a plan to Hades Castle but at the moment the sheer amount of bullets are more than my suicide-bullet-absorbing skills can handle.

To get that kind of score without EX is already a very good job. I can only barely surpass that with Rosa.

Just got my first Deathsmiles 1CC. I was concentrating on the 1CC, so I picked five level 1s and one level 2 difficulty. No EX of course.

Vanilla

Anesthetize - 89,774,389 - ALL (no EX) - Rosa - 360 (NA)

I'm sure I can improve this by quite a bit with practice. I should be fine doing mostly 2s and maybe some 3s as well.

Personally I've been playing Rank 3 all the way since I feel like that's how it's meant to be played, but congrats on the 1cc nonetheless. :D

Congratz to the 1cc!

Hmm... now that you mention it... I think I could get the 1cc too if I'd played in 1s instead of 2s and 3s as I tend to do it... Doh! Why didn't I think of this before? *head to the wall smiley*

<scrolls up> ... Yep, it was just updated a week ago.

Yeah, I started out doing 3s and a couple 2s, but I'd always alose a life or two over the first 6 levels and wouldn't get the clear. So I decided I was finally going to at least get a 1cc, so I switched to mostly 1s so all I really needed to worry about was the castle level. I didn't think I'd be able to get both extends playing all 1s, but it was actually quite easy.

Edit: I just added two more level 2 stages to my run, and got the clear (with 3 lives remaining), but with a lower score  I made it to the final stage with a higher score than my previous run, but since I screwed up the last stage my final score was lower. I'm enjoying the game more and more as I play, though. Can't decide if I should stick to Vanilla for a while, or get to know MBL a little better.

you should get acustom to regular DS before jumping to MBL. The difficulty jump between them is significant.

MBL (mainly Sakura) helped me actually enjoy the game instead of giving up in frustration. Before I spent a significant amount of time getting comfortable with option controls in MBL, I couldn't deal with suicide bullets at all and basically ran away to 1.1.

Actually managing the suicide bullets in MBL is much easier than in the Vanilla. Your option's absorb radius is at least double or triple of Vanilla. The problem comes only in 999 modes where the real problem is the enemy bullet pattern

It sure as hell is! Since I became a mod it doesn't typically refresh the 'last edited' date when I go back and edit a post (thus the misleading 'last edited' date in the first post of this thread, and all the high score threads I maintain). Rest assured, I've always got my eye on this thread!

I have a way harder time dealing with the suicide bullets in original Death Smiles compared to MBL. Once you've had the chance also to play as Sakura its really hard to get used to only having one option and not being able to shoot in the opposite direction too.

Also, here's my best MBL 360 mode score so far:

422,966,471 - BIT - 4-2 EX - Sakura - MBL 360 NA v1.02

I don't have a screen shot right now but I have my replay uploaded on my friend's XBL account called "Dethcookie" using my initials "BIT". I'm currently #30 on the NA leaderboard for MBL 360 mode.

Agreed, that's why I'm sticking to the original (vanilla) version and maybe MBL. I told myself never to touch 1.1, or I might never return back. So far I only played MBL for the Ruined Crystal Temple stage with Windia, it's so cool smashing everything in sight!

And I forgot to add this, I'm coming into the MBL (360) list with a bang!
Image
It's not very clear on the photo, but I went to both Extra stages

Question: Does Rank 1 (Easy) and Rank 4 (Very Hard) have any impact on gameplay and scoring, other than the life extension requirements? So far, it doesn't seem to affect me at all, but this score was played on default settings.

powersoul - I've added your entry from the photo provided, but in future can you still enter your score following the format set out in the first post of this thread? If everybody starts just posting photos with no text score submission, updates will become a bit of a pain. Thanks!

bitkid - can you confirm which EX stages you did?

There's a 1 on the continue counter on that score that was in the picture.

Also, I definitely prefer vanilla and 1.1 compared to their MBL counterparts. Which makes this game the only one from the Cave games I've tried where I prefer the White Label to the Black Label.

Spadgy: No problem, I was in a hurry yesterday as playing Deathsmiles almost made me late for work =X

And yeah, its my first try on MBL. Went 999 alll the way, so I kinda died at the 6th stage... but from that point onwards, my score was higher than that of the first 6 stages of maybe only 280k.

Next MBL effort, not a 1cc again:

EDIT: Please refer to my latest post, since I made another score before you could update this one.
