What pin(s) in the VGA cable is used to power the SLG3000?

If you do an internal VGA mod on a Dreamcast which outputs only R,G,B,H,V and Ground would that be able to power it? I think I read somewhere that the SLG3000 was powered by the sync signal...?
Yep... The sync.

got mine in the mail today. I hooked it all up and adjusted the intensity to my liking. Ketsui with bicubic filter looks damn amazing with this little guy.

is there a list anywhere of the monitor resolutions that support the slg3000 well? I have a 720p sharp lcd tv (real resolution 1366 x 768) and it doesn't scale the scanlines properly and generates a moire pattern. My 16080x1050 16:10 pc monitor also does a poor job (but mame outputting at the native resolution with its emulated scanlines are properly spaced). Should all 1080p tvs scale this without a problem? I have also been thinking about getting a 4:3 lcd for my pc that can rotate easily. Many of them have a 1280x1024 resolution. Would that scale well? I thought the slg3000 would fix my scanline woes, but I'm afraid its revealed that I need a new monitor as well! Are any of you using monitors with the resolutions I have without problems?

unfortunately you can't be sure before testing it.

In general MOST HD-ready LCDs and Plasmas (768p) do a poor job on upscaling scanlined images. MOST 1080p TVs do a pretty good job. On PC displays it's hit or miss. All 1200p (21" 4:3 or 24" 16:10) IPS displays I've seen do this ok.

We should compile all the common PC resolutions and make a 480p / 720p compatibility chart for the first post.

It's not a resolution problem, it's a scaler problem. If you have a nice scaler (or a TV with a good scaler), you can easily scale 480p with scanlines to 1366x768 (just as an example)....

I received mine a few days ago but haven't had a chance to check it out.

I'm hoping it's ok.. The box had a product-sized hole torn in it from some type of impact. Makes me glad I got the casing! It looks fine.

can you tell me what the cheapest scaler would be that would allow me to use the slg3000 in 640x480 comfortably on any 1366x768 lcd screen without moire patterns? (i.e. cheapest good scaler) Would that scaler plug in after the slg3000? I assume this would be a cheaper option than getting a new monitor (I hope!). Thanks.

I have a question.

My video card has two outputs, while my CRT monitors have two inputs. To me it seems like the perfect application for the SLG3000. Currently, I have the first video out running to my CRT's Input A, which I use for my desktop and everything else. I plan on running the SLG3000 between video out 2 and my CRT's Input B.

Now when I use Windows, I often run resolutions that the SLG3000 doesn't support, but because I'll have the SLG3000 connected to video out 2 all the time, it'll constantly receive the same high resolutions that are running through video out 1.

Could running these unsupported resolutions through the device damage it over time?

The SLG supports resolutions beyond 1080p, besides, you can wire an off switch, the SLG will operate as a pass through.

Is this absolutely necessary though? How does it handle resolutions it doesn't support and can it be damaged when this occurs?

I'm also not particularly fond of having a wire dangling out of the SLG3000. I suspect I'm probably not the only one.

HI
It is not possible to damage the SLG by using too high resolutions.
It will just not work, because the RMS of the sync-signal will not reach the level to generate the supply.
In this case you have to connect any extern supply voltage, see former explanation.
But at higher resolution there is no strong effect, the scanlines are nearly invisible.
You see: There is nothing to pay attention!!

hi all. First sorry about my english. i will try to explain the better i can.

I have bought the slg3000 and in my first impression was really good, but after trying 3-4 days i have found some problems i hope yo can solve me.

Main problems are irregular scanlines. I can see them for example in some vertical scrolls. For example in deathsmile xbox 480p mode. When the scenary goes down it makes like uggly lines in some places.

But the most erros ocurre in mame (because there are thousand of games to play).

Example commnado or terra cresta (640x480). Horrible effects in the vertical scroll. Its my slg 3000 ok or may be is defectuous? its any solution to this?

that's probably your mistake. Terra Cresta for example has a 224 line resolution, so scaling it to 480 lines before running through the SLG3000 causes a misalignment of the scanlines to the actual pixels. You can actually test this if you use MAME's internal scanlines for a moment. Try overlay D3D scanlines vs. fixed alignment Direct Draw scanlines and you'll see the difference.

EDIT: if you have irregular spaced scanlines on all titles, then your display just can't properly scale 480p to it's native resolution.

well i have found myself a solution. Its very simple. Enter in the ingame menu and strech vertical the image to 1.66.

Now the scrolls works perfect. !!!. The problem is that i have to go with the games 1 by 1. But.....well really i have only notice this problem in 3- 4 games. In nother games that works in 320x224 or similar, i cant appreciate nothing special

But if someone knows another way i will be pleased to listen it.

Man, I just read about this at Kotaku and am so tempted to buy one. However, I have already invested so much money in scanlines by buying a Super Emotia ($100), RGB to SCART cable ($35), an XRGB-2+ ($200), VGA to Component converter ($70), Component to VGA converter ($35). I was wondering if anyone who has the SLG3000 and an XRGB-2+ can tell me which one gives a better picture quality on an HDTV and CRT Monitor??? The one game that I really want to have a better picture quality is the last blade 1&2 for the PS2. If the SLG3000 is better, then I will probably just sell everything and buy this instead. :?

No doubt, the best option: XRGB-3 and DVDO combo.

XRGB-3>DVDO>HDFury>SLG3000>A good TV with IPS panel. (Panasonic TX-L32G20)

or

DVDO>HDFury>SLG3000>A good TV with IPS panel. (Panasonic TX-L32G20)

@peace4myheart

what do you currently use to deinterlace the PS2's picture before feeding the Emotia ?

If you add a SLG3000 after the XRGB2+ you will gain scanlines on 480i titles (like Last Blade). For 480p sources (e.g. a 360) you also don't need the Emotia anymore.

I'm glad the SLG3000 is getting more coverage (as peace4myheart pointed out) as seen on Kotaku. I also feel the short blurb gives good insight into what the general public understands about video formats :|
Current Setup:

720P------------------------v
240P->XRGB-3->Edge->4x2 matrix->DLP HDTV
480i/P->YPbPrselect-^ . . ^ . . V-->hdmi2vga->Super Emotia->Tate CRT SDTV
PC->vga2hdmi-------------^

I have just bought a XRGB-2+. I also have a SLG3000. On 240p material there is little point in using the SLG in conjunction with the XRGB, but as Fudoh says, with the SLG you can at least achieve scanlines with 480i video from the XRGB-2+ where required.

Nothing really. I was only using the Emotia for the XBOX360, not the PS2. Looks like I will be selling off my Emotia and getting one of these. Thanks for the reply Fudoh. Always a big help.

Not sure I need something like this for the portion of my consoles that fall under the 15khz category. Using the XRGB-3 I can already get scanlines from systems such as Mega Drive, SNES, N64, SMS, and NeoGeo through GAME IN input.

However, I COULD use such an intricate tool to play 31khz games on Dreamcast. Finally grant games like Guilty Gear X and Shenmue scanlines for that authentic CRT feel. Maybe it will provide the Panasonic 3DO with scanlines! I've tried the scan settings on the XRGB but for some reason 3DO projects it very faint. Count me in.

My friend is going to be calling me non-stop once I pass along the news. He will be very pleased to learn you can adjust potentiometer AWA the polarity. This add-on may serve said purpose, it appears as the proper choice rather than settling for those generic voltage dividers.
