Chernobyl. Terrorist. Attack.
Yes.
You're between builings, then you get shot at by some bad guys. Then the shovelware tells you to return to mission area and you die. The controls are really laggy. Bad guy contemplates a crate. Your mission objective points somewhere. You follow it. The shovelware tells you to return to mission area and you die. It's quite bad. A pair of untextured triangles slowly turns around and floats away. You aim a pistol at a bad guy. You fire. No sound, no recoil. Framerate halves as the bad guy falls to the ground in slo-mo. The shovelware BSODs and you're happy. You uninstall the shovelware, run ccleaner, and reboot your computer again just in case.

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Did anyone play the PC Starship Troopers FPS from 6 or so years ago?
I'm trying to figure out if there's a specific combination of settings to reduce/eliminate the input lag. Even aiming with the mouse has really bad delay before the game responds. Looking at some of the reviews, it looks like this was a common problem on release. My PC was rather high-end a few years ago, so I'm not using hardware that was outdated when the game was released.
It seems like it should be dumb mindless fun, with massive swarms of bugs to blow away, but this technical issue is keeping me from enjoying it.

Been on a weird kick where I'm trying to play old PC FPS games that I always wanted to play, but somehow missed out on. Completed the original Deus Ex last week and now I've finally moved onto Thief: Gold. I remember when it came out, but for some reason I always skipped it, despite wanting to play it all these years. Only a couple of hours in and so far I'm loving it, as well as kicking myself for not getting it back in '98.

Glad to see the shoutouts for Painkiller, Deux Ex and Thief. Truly great games.
I'm on a Borderlands bender thanks to the recent Steam sale. It's basically Diablo with guns and a rarely seen pseudo-cel shaded art style, so I'm having a blast. I haven't played a shmup in months. :O

Man, I just played all the way through Doom 1 eps 2 and 3. That is still so easily my favorite single player FPS ever. Awesome abstract levels (which help gameplay a LOT when compared to locations which absolutely have to look realistic), and the game balance is amazingly tight. It's also incredible how badly the quality dropped off with Doom 2-- lots of cheap death and memorizer gameplay (and no new bosses, wtf) :/

Yeah, Doom is an amazing achievement in the genre. I've beaten it on PSP a while ago, and it's still amazing. Time to take a rest from Ys and blast through Heretic and Hexen, actually...

Hell yeah.. I was meaning to play through Heretic again, but I don't know where my disc of that and Hexen went. That one is almost on par with Doom imo. And I feel like I never really gave Hexen enough of a chance. Heretic has great deathmatch play, too.

I recently obtained a Roland sound canvas sound card. The card used by Robert Prince when he composed the midis for DooM. I may just play DooM again now with the proper sound card. Duke 3d and blood too , and a crap load of old dos game are suddenly very tempting too

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
I really dig the 'uber dark fantasy' art and visual setting of Heretic and especially Hexen, which is one of the darkest, most menacing-looking games I've ever played. There are not so many games with such art style - off the top of my head are Mageslayer and Elemental Gearbolt. Maybe someone knows more games that look similar?louisg wrote:Hell yeah.. Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Yeah, Heretic is excellent.. I think it's somewhere between Doom 1 and 2 in terms of quality (not as good as 1, better than 2). I also started playing Hexen again, and I just don't like the melee attacks very much; I don't think they're fun.
I'm also looking for more Doom levels in the vein of Doom 1. I've found a site about the best WADs of the last decade, but it seems like a lot of them are just pushing the engine and aren't really that intent on a good single player experience. Could anyone here recommend some? Preferably one that doesn't need a particular engine port.

Yeah, Hexen is a bit awkward in the 'first person slasher' department, but Maken X and Witchaven got it rightlouisg wrote:I also started playing Hexen again, and I just don't like the melee attacks very much; I don't think they're fun.
There are a lot of nice WADs for ZDoom - Capt. Mancubus, Simplicity, Action Doom 1 & 2. Yeah, they do push the engine and require a particular source port, but remain excellent singleplayer campaigns nonetheless!louisg wrote:I've found a site about the best WADs of the last decade, but it seems like a lot of them are just pushing the engine and aren't really that intent on a good single player experience. I gave Hexen a chance twice and it bugged on me both times, in different spots, rendering both playthroughs unfinishable. Never again (amazing game though, shame about the issues).louisg wrote:And I feel like I never really gave Hexen enough of a chance.
Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Hell yeah! I love all this talk about old FPS games. I finally got Heretic in the big box around last month, but I haven't been able to put much time into it. Always love Hexen when it came out, and yeah, they both have such a great, dark and medieval atmosphere. How does Hexen 2 hold up with it's full 3D graphics?

Hey, I was thinking of picking up either Red Steel 2 or 007 for Wii. Are either of those any good? I'm out for something not totally linear, if that is possible (I thought the original Goldeneye and Doom were flexible enough; I'm not looking for open world, just less of a guided tour).

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Hexen 2 holds up very well compared to Heretic & Hexen. It has the same dark, ominous, sinister & fearsome atmosphere & story line, multiple paths, tones of secrets and puzzles, none linear gameplay and an awesome medieval sountrack just like the previous 2 (It even features a couple of remixed tracks from Heretic). Do try it out, you can't go wrong with it. If you liked Heretic & Hexen, then you'll love this one too. My favorite part of the game was the 2nd Inca/Aztec world. The level layout was excellent. Overall the graphics were good, but not as pleasing as Hexen's. That early Quake 1 engine just didn't look right in this game, especially the weapons.drauch wrote:Hell yeah! But be warned, you must patch the game to the latest version before playing it, as there is a very nasty bug at the Egyptian world just before you fight the Boss, where the path leading to the Boss won't open up. So I was forced to use the no-clip cheat to proceed further.

Both are well worth picking up.louisg wrote:Hey, I was thinking of picking up either Red Steel 2 or 007 for Wii. Are either of those any good? Goldeneye is excellent and only let down by QTE or death situations. You get additional objectives as you go up through the difficulty settings and you can try to be stealthy or just go mental - so there's a fair bit of variety. The level designs are quite linear, but more akin to traditional fps than your narrow corridor CoD.
Red Steel 2 is probably about 50% fps, because you spend a lot of your time pulling off moves with your sword. The vague illusion of open world can be a bit boring and sadly there's no meaningful plot in spite of the cool Firefly-esque sci-fi meets wild west. Basically, the fun in killing people is right there but it's most enjoyable with the sword (although the point blank shoot-him-in-the-face finishing move is great). Oh, and you must have Motion Plus - but you can get it bundled with the game if not.
Conduit 2 is worth a look too. It ends just as it feels like it's getting into its stride - so like the first one it's a bit short. But the levels that are there are big, open and packed with non-unlimited spawning stuff to kill. It also looks really awesome and has some quite silly dialogue/easter eggs.
Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Well after playing Duke Nukem Forever up to level "Duke Dome", I can say that it's primarily aimed for 14 year old fan boys. It uses the same boring super linear formula that plagues most modern FPS (and I mean super linear as if it's on rails), it has cheap "humor", no exploration or secrets, and the action pails compared to the highly destructive DK3D of 1996. over all its a very easy game.
I don't know if I'll play it any further as I've lost interest all ready.
Good thing I didn't pay for this!
I wonder if BM mod is ever released, will it be any better than this?

Just finished playing the PSX version of Quake II many times, and it was really a bit easy to play than the PC version.

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Quake II on the PSX is a solid port, considering. I really like the added lighting effects and the extra music from the original PC expansions as well.tinotormed wrote:Just finished playing the PSX version of Quake II many times, and it was really a bit easy to play than the PC version.

Hey, man. Some hit the bottle early on...among other things. I was lurking a forum (don't remember where) where a group of guys were talking about how a sixteen-year-old girl they knew was running train with a few guys at her dad's house, shortly after he left for work. Weirder things have happened.
I guess if you have an older brother who is a raging alcoholic, as well as boundless curiosity, it should be relatively easy to get your hands on some hard liquor. I'm not saying that this is the case for drauch, but it happens.

This thread is in danger of becoming weasels.
Back on topic: I tried the demo for Halo Reach. I continue to be underwhelmed by this franchise. The only one I've played all the way through was the original, and the only reason I completed it was from being convinced that the next section would explain why the game is so revered. Not that one, must be the next section. Not that one either, maybe the next? Then it ended and I left baffled, tried Halo 2, and gave up after a few hours of more of the same. Suffice to say, the FPS section of the Halo Reach demo was more of the same again. If it hadn't have been for the cutscenes and space combat mission I would have had a hard time telling this apart from the 10 year old Halo 1. Same type of terrain. Same weapons. Same awkward rock formations for cover. Same tedious skittering enemies. I'll pass thanks, Bungie.

In reference to the actual game, though: I loved it. I don't really care or want to argue about the reviews anymore, but I really liked it. It's not the best game ever, but it made me laugh a lot and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took me about 8-9 hours on normal difficulty. It has it's fair share of problems, but if you have been waiting for another Duke Nukem game and just want to enjoy yourself, give it a try. That is all I am going to say.
