Shmup-inspired ideas you've had
Shmup-inspired ideas you've had
Ever been dissatisfied with something in life, and then realized some mechanic in a shmup could actually be used to solve said problem? Well, this thread is devoted to that kind of thing...here's some examples.
-I get plagued by the fact that I have to adjust my cursor sensitivity on my mouse whenever I want to just browse the web or when I'm actually trying to doodle something (Because I'm too cheap for a tablet, yo) and the thought occurred to me: Why not use a button to slow down the cursor? CAVE, you geniuses...
-What if you had a multiplayer game map that 'looped' instead of having boundaries, and running off said boundary would just put you on the other side of the map? Strania proved it's possible. While I don't play FPS games enough to advocate it for that, it would certainly stop people complaining about map size.
-I was thinking of a game similar to Border Down (As much as I hate it) where if you died, you wouldn't just start over, you'd keep going through the eyes of another character that was previously unplayable. This could add a lot to the sense that anyone can die, which is all too rare in video games these days.
Any of you get weird thoughts like this?

Pacman "loops", according to your boundaries thought.esreveR wrote:-What if you had a multiplayer game map that 'looped' instead of having boundaries, and running off said boundary would just put you on the other side of the map? Also, this idea would be horrible for FPS games. People would camp just on the boundary of a map, and just wait for people to wlk right through. At the start of a match, people would just turn around and huck grenades backwards since they would instantly pop out right on top of the enemies initial spawn.
All of the "walls" would just be invisible teleports basically.
Not really, but when I play Lumines or Tetris a lot I always see things as shapes and how they could fall onto objects below them.Any of you get weird thoughts like this?

The thing is, the 'boundaries' wouldn't be able to be discerned from a first-person view. It's not as much "looping" as it is "tiling". In fact, the only real way to know where the boundaries are would be by studying the stage data and/or getting the developers to explain it to you.Vyxx wrote:Pacman "loops", according to your boundaries thought.esreveR wrote:-What if you had a multiplayer game map that 'looped' instead of having boundaries, and running off said boundary would just put you on the other side of the map? Whenever i drive on a freeway with heavy traffic, I hear a boss track (mostly the esprade boss soundtrack/raging decide) in my head and i feel like im dodging bullets. This is especially true with freeway onramps.

One time I was borrowing a friends Van and we were on a major highway. Normally I drive a small car, so the van felt very big and I remember thinking to myself "I wonder what my hitbox is?"Avatar Ignis wrote:Whenever i drive on a freeway with heavy traffic, I hear a boss track (mostly the esprade boss soundtrack/raging decide) in my head and i feel like im dodging bullets. Buy a newer logitech mouse. They have your "slow" down button(s) built into the mouse.esreveR wrote:

I've had thoughts like this before, unfortunately I've forgotten where.
Mainly stuff like navigating through huge hordes of wankers that make up my school's population and running through rain.

In my job piloting the Styx I've often wondered if ideas from shmups could help in our relentless battle against the ORN empire.
I suggested this to my boss at the Galaxy Federation but he said it was a stupid idea.

Re: Shmup-inspired ideas you've had
Here during winter i need to de-ice a roof that is very dangerous because large slabs of ice can fall right on the sidewalk and kill people.
What i did is attach a hammer at the end of 28 feet of aluminum tubing and then from the street bellow i hit the ice slabs until parts of it detach and fall.
Im the only madman in town de-icing his roof like that, people in the street will take pictures of me when im doing that.
The thing is that when the ice finally falls it usually comes right at me so i have to dodge it or probably die. Its quite exhilarating and i often think of how its a bit like a shmup when Dodging aimed shots, haha.
I should wear a hard hat though, next winter ill try to get one. Once i nearly got hit.

Shmuppers tend to be extreme thrill seekers .. though it's nice that the thrills in shmups can't, you know, actually kill you :P

Speaking of tablets, the Wacom Intuos 4 has a button for "precision mode", which does exactly that.esreveR wrote: -I get plagued by the fact that I have to adjust my cursor sensitivity on my mouse whenever I want to just browse the web or when I'm actually trying to doodle something (Because I'm too cheap for a tablet, yo) and the thought occurred to me: Why not use a button to slow down the cursor? But really, a used Bamboo or even an older generation Wacom are absolutely worth every penny and the entry level ones have the same solid technology like the bigger ones. Ever since I got used to using a Wacom I threw out my mouse entirely (except for FPS gaming, which is very, very rare) - it´s so much more comfortable and exact than the potatoes on a string that mice are.
Also, I´m pretty sure there are gamer mice where you can adjust the DPI settings on the fly. My Dell PC came with a pretty cheap mouse that did that too.
Oh god yes, this. Especially after playing Shikigami No Shiro with that dude with the backpack.SFKhoa wrote:Going through large crowds in the city.

Re: Shmup-inspired ideas you've had
playing lots of shmups has actually made it easy to swerve between people and get to where I need to be a lot easier at school. It's like all the people in the hall are bullets that I need to dodge. lol Strange right?
When the bullets shoot bullets, you know you have a problem.

Dashing through the center of a mosh pit. Imagine that you're making strafing runs on the band ala UN Squadron. Chances are you wouldn't even look that out of place.SFKhoa wrote:Going through large crowds in the city.

I would change polarity from black to white while driving through certain residential areas, or dealing with law enforcement.
