So which shmup developers will still keep up?

Post by DMC »

I would like to list shmups developers that made shooters recently and speculate what we can expect from them in the future.

Just to start, please fill in with more:

Cave

recent outputs: Akai katana (X360), DDP DFK BL (X360), Muchi-muchi Pork & Pink Sweets (X360).
to come: Dangun Feveron (?)
speculation: starting to change their course, making other games. But it feels pretty safe they will provide us with a decent catalogue of new shooters and ports within the next few years. Is there a risk they go ALL IN on iphone games?

G.Rev

recent outputs: Strania (XBLA), Mamorokun (X360)
to come Ps3 remake of Mamorukun
speculation likely they will re-release Under Defeat and Border Down on xbox 360, at least if strania goes well. It feels pretty safe G.Rev will provide us with a couple more solid shooters before going broke.

5pb

recent outputs: Bullet Soul (X360)
to come DLC for Bullet soul.
speculation Likely they give shooter developing a couple more shots, or maybe they go back to publishing non-cave shooters?

Moss

recent outputs: Raiden IV
to come
speculation: Raiden V?

Milestone:

recent outputs: Milestone Shooting Collection 2 (Wii) Radirgy Noa Massive (X360)
to come
speculation

Triangle Service

recent outputs: Shooting Love 200x (X360)
to come:
speculation:
Doujins:

touhou

recent outputs: touhou.
to come: touhou.
speculation: no need.

Ruminant's Whimper

recent outputs: Hellsinker
to come:
speculation: Hellsinker sequel PLEASE

Image
Blackbird

recent outputs: ?
to come: he won't say anything more.
speculation: Iphone shooter with LOADS of download extras.

Yotsubane

recent outputs: Crimzon Clover
to come:
speculation:

I'm sure CAVE will give us some 360 exclusives.

DSIII, Mushi III, some new IP.

G.Rev will probably give us a Senko update. Hopefully DLC and not a whole new title.

I'm sure 5pb will keep pumping out titles, every one a CAVE clone and none ever worth the price. I'm sure we will see plenty of *sales point* cameos too.

Maybe MOSS will put some thing out worth while.

Touhou touhou touhou. Random [one-man] teams come and go, but Touhou is always there.

Some more questions to ask: Will there be a Raiden V? Will Gulti or even Warashi throw out something new? Will Treasure ever attempt to finish the game they were working on?

Milestone and Triangle Service are also still out there for the moment, though I hesitate to offer any predictions of my own.

<- This guy's developing a shooting game. I won't say anything more about it until I have something more tangible, though.

I actually feel like there is a slight resurgence of interest in shooting games, and I think this will continue, especially with download services and mobile gaming becoming more and more popular. It also helps the retro is in right now.

In other words, the mainstream may or may not persevere, but I think we'll see many more one/two person indie teams coming out of nowhere with awesome games.

Personally, I'm the most interested to see what Yotsubane does next.

Yotsubane got a pretty good fanbase going with Crimzon Clover and all. I'd say that if he survived the quake he's on his way to a good franchise.

You know, shit, he hasn't posted anything on his blog since the quake. I hope he's all right...

It wont happen as it would severly limit what they can do with these IPs in following console generations. Personally Ild like to see one or 2 of these old games (Dang Fev and Mushi) see a comeback with added content. However reading that new Cave article even that might be unlikly, as in it Cave say they will wait and see as to how well Guwange does before committing to any more XBLA titles.

To OP:I think NG:DevTeam deserves a spot in that list

I'd wager to say Cave may be getting out of the arcade market entirely. 360 and iPhone only.

Also .. I'm still making kusoge :3

Touhou=Like herpes, easily ignored, but certainly not going anywhere anytime soon.

I wonder what kind of changes CAVE will make to their shmups once they are finally finished with the arcades.

The way that ZUN adds 1 or 2 new sprites per 3 or 4 games in another 10 or 20 years Touhou 38 might finally have decent graphics. Just like it took Arnold Schwarzenegger nearly his whole acting career before he could speak english

It's probably hard to draw well when you're intoxicated. And ZUN is always seen with beer.

And come on, he usually adds at least six or seven sprites per game...one for each of the bosses

I hope for these as well, preferably over XBLA or region-free retail.

I would kill for a perfect ESPRade port.

Ok, so that's it? Cave, G.Rev, Moss, Milestone, Triangle Service, 5pb.
That's it for non-doujin developers that have recently released a shooter and is somewhat likely to release another?

The big difference is Triangle Service has released four official and licensed products to retail, two of those under the Triangle Service name on DC and Xbox 360. The other two were PS2 releases published by Taito and Datam Polystar. Not to mention their arcade presence, their latest being a Pengo game for Sega. While Fujino positions himself as some sort of rogue indie developer, the fact is that his company has worked exclusively in the commercial space for far too long to ever be considered indie.

Well enough to warrant a second print that is also about to get exhausted. I also hope he starts a new project and, hopefully, that he'll take far less to finish it as well... But many of these games have long development times.

edit: as for this topic, I'm really no guru or futurist so I have no idea nor I'm sure who will be left...

Nah, Doujin are really fan made games, and should be either free or sold at comiket or doujin speciality stores who also might have an online shop aswell. Any other game that is sold on consoles or is published as a regular full release is a commercial game. That includes games that were originally doujin but get picked up by a publisher like Melty Blood, Recettear and Trouble Witches Neo.

Imo I dont really understand the why some ppl tend to dismiss doujin as been something automatically inferior to commercial shmups just because its on PC and doesnt have that arcade like eye candy. If the game is good is all that matters at the end of the day.

EDIT: SNk playmore seem to be serious about shmups considering theyve made SkyStage and published Trouble Witches Neo, so hopefully we will be seeing more shooters from them in the future.

BTW NGdev Team are making an run and gunner atm
