Using a DVDO Edge to assist in recording 480p video. Doable?

Post by darthjones »

Basically, I want to record 480p footage from my Wii, PS2, PS3, and PSP. Those who own video capture cards know that that resolution is pure evil when it comes to recording footage. I'm hoping that the process of upscaling 480p to something that most video capture cards can handle (like 720p) will allow it to be recorded. Can someone who has a DVDO (any model, but I'd prefer the Edge since it's within my price range) see if this works?

Has been discussed a few times before. This will work fine.

If you don't have a capture card yet, the latest generation of BMD products support 480p now as well.

What? Is this only for the Shuttle, or did BMD release a new driver for the Intensity Pro? You've told me that somehow the IP driver did not expose 480p?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, give the Hauppauge 1212 PVR a try.

still only true for the latest generation, which includes the Shuttle, the UltraStudio and the Decklink HD 3D.

The Hauppage box is still nice, but one should be aware of the advantages (live encoding) and disadvantes (live encoding) of this solution.

Thanks for the info. I already have a Matrox MXO2 Mini, but now I might get a BMD Shuffle since it can capture 480p. Is there a reason 480p hasn't been supported until now? I was under the impression that it was because there was some agreement between all the manufacturers and content providers that stated that 480p would be locked out because of piracy concerns...

BMD concentrates on the broadcast market and 480p just isn't a broadcast standard (480i/576i/720p/1080i are). They added 480p because of numerous requests from people who need to capture videogames at 480p (Wii for example). The hardware also hasn't changed, 480p has just not (yet) been added to the drivers for the older hardware.

Hi Fudoh,
I've a new intensity shuttle usb 3.0 but I didn't see anything from the DVDO

the configuration is:
Neo geo component mod -> DVDO edge 480p -> intensity shuttle 480p black screen on media express ( says no remonte in the right upper corner)

Neo geo component mod -> DVDO edge 720p -> intensity shuttle 720p black screen on media express ( says no remonte in the right upper corner)

Neo geo component mod -> DVDO edge 1080i -> intensity shuttle 1080i black screen on media express ( says no remonte in the right upper corner)

I've to do something special for use it right?

thank you

Two settings:

a) disable HDCP in the output stream.
b) unlock the output frequency from the input.

(and first make sure that the Shuttle works with a standard signal, e.g. a direct component connection from a DVD player).

Main -> Settings -> Advanced -> Output HDCP Mode

Set this to auto, so the HDMI signals is unprotected as long as the input (component) is unprotected.

You know that you have to set Media Express to the proper input signal by hand, yes ? The port on the BMD are NOT auto-sensing.

On my Multibridge I not only have to set the proper input resolution and frequency, but also the color space, so if your Edge is set to 720p YPbPr 4:2:2 the Media Express setting has to reflect this. If you choose RGB instead you won't get a picture.
