You do realise that you can change the buttons? I always remember having to go into the options to switch the buttons every time I went back to Arrange mode. Bit of a pain but it was worth it to keep the same layout.
I can't really speak for the other games, but it would be hard to argue that Espgaluda Arrange isn't better than Arcade/Original mode.
Mushihimesama arrange (PS2)
Espgaluda arrange (PS2)
DOJ Death Label (PS2)
Espgaluda 2 arrange (360)
DFK BL Ketsupachi (360)
DFK 1.5 Arrange A (360)
Ketsui X Mode (360)
Mushi Futari 1.01
Fail:
Mushi Futari arrange (360)
DFK 1.5 arrange B (360)
Haven't really given much time to DS 1.01. Heard good things about it although didn't really like what I played of it. Don't really care for any novice modes, but that's not a relevant criticism given the point of them.
Well, it's pretty close to Futari BL Original in the sense that you have to point-blank everything (and by that I mean getting really close to the enemies) with S-shot. I have a video of a player beating stage 5 ending it with a really nice 2 billion score. For better or for worse, 900 million were gained during the stage, and 400 million during the endgame tally (100 mil per spare life). It's not a legitimate clear, though, as the video begins with a stage restart.

Does Deathsmiles 1.1 count as an arrange? Activating death mode right off the bat on the first stage made the game more interesting, using the familiar to swoop around and collect bullets.

God dammit, I just knew something was off when I posted regarding the button scheme. I did look at the Options Menu and see the controls and thought they were exclusive to the Normal mode!
My point still stands however - the fact that one needs to do that just to maintain normal control scheme is *still* fucked up.

This.
Stupid Question: What's wrong with the Xbox 360 controller?
Weird, I never noticed anything like that with mine. I use a wired "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" that I bought last year and is proper Microsoft as opposed to those shitty third-party adaptations. Maybe I'm just used to it.
Well the D-pad is terrible, yes, I don't understand how you could not notice that. But I've played a few shoot'em ups using the analog stick, and it tends to work alright. I just prefer having an 8-way digital joystick (ie. arcade stick) for 8-way digital controls, really...

Well, if you can rapidly alternate left-right without hitting a diagonal for a few seconds straight, I can only congratulate you.
I myself am using a Horipad EX3 which has a SNES-style d-pad.

When my wired controller breaks down I'll definitely look out for that one as a probable replacement. Thanks for the info.
For PC I'm using Madkatz' SF4 fightpad that I got for free as a promo thing.
It feels awfully light and cheap, and the D-pad looks and feels way too loose, but it's actually very accurate.
With Deathsmiles 1.1 you can still have fun with the game and get a decent score with a stick, It's certainly worth playing this way. I can't use the 360 pad - the score may suffer compared to those who do but screw that.

It does? Since when? I've always played 1.1 with a stick.
Practice with Windia, her familiar is the easiest to control. It stays nice and close and covers your back as you move around. Assign a button to move it around in the tricky spots, easy as pie.
