Configuring keyboard for auto fire

Did any of you try or use sharpkeys a keyboard mapper to config a key for auto-fire?

Ok, not auto-fire, but instead of holding down a button for a long period of time just press it once and it'll continue as if you are holding the button down.

Is that shamed down upon in the shmup community?
I got a macro to work for this but it creates lag.
