Question regarding AV adapters for PS2 & PS3

Post by Rock Man »

Did Sony or any other 3rd party company create a Playstation specific switcher designed for Component Video with a regular PS jack built on the adapter? (for ends that usually goes inside the system) I heard of the Composite Video ones (common) and S-Video versions (rare) but wondered if they made them just with the Playstation socket on the adapter instead of the former 2 video outputs. Reason for my asking is I'm looking to connect the PS2 through both RGB SCART and Component.

In otherwords I'm looking for something that looks like this: http://www.zsqts.com.cn/product-photo/2 ... daptor.jpg

Except with the Composite side switched to the female end? (hope this is the correct terminology) Which connects to the Playstation.

If anyone has a solution for this let me know.

I don't recall something like that ever being made (if memory serves, those breakout-style dongles were originally made to plug Guncon controllers into).

Enquiring minds want to know what you are trying to achieve here, the picture quality of SCART and Component are pretty much identical in most cases.

I have to assume he's trying to use both simultaneously. I have my doubts on if this is actually possible though.

Yes, but why use both at the same time?

It's not. The same pins are used for output, on the PS2 RGB or Y/Pb/Pr must be selected from the config menu. The PS3 is the same.

I'm no a fan of swapping cables, some PS2 games play low-res sources exclusively on Composite/S-Video/RGB others will work in Component. It's hard to explain but I want to be able to just hit the button on my switcher and play Smackdown: SYM/HCTP in anything higher than lame Composite Video, without the need for ejecting and inserting leads back and fourth. Component flat out rejects 240p games on my television, I originally thought RGB would be the next best thing but seeing as how that can't be done. I'll just have to keep searching for one of those S-Video equipped PS2 AV Adapters. Oddly enough I keep running into the AV > Composite-only ones. I need one that does AV > S-Video.

They look like this: http://www.zsqts.com.cn/product-photo/2 ... daptor.jpg

Anyone have one they'd like to sell?

Never encountered a PS2 game that didn't work through component. Component can carry all the same signals as RGB SCART plus HD signals too. You could try transcoding the component to RGB or feed it through the XRGB3 (get a matrix routing switch and feed one end XRGB3 and the other end to your TV). Lots of TV's process component really badly (for games anyway).

Mines is the exception as every hardware I ran through Component turned out viable. In fact my DVD Player does both Component and VGA (the YUV type I think) but for some reason the quality is a little better for Component. I did try connecting PS2 through SCART RGB to convert into VGA signal. The picture looked horrible compared to regular Component Video. I saw faint interference and the colors seemed bland, none of which occurred in straight up Component. The SCART cable is fine when hooking it up to PS1.

However, you have provided me with an idea. I could try hooking up Component to VGA out. My Xbox did look good in Component-to-VGA state. Perhaps the signal difference will allow me to play games in high quality as usual, likewise regain access to my complete library. I'll fool around with it by testing a few titles in both Component RAW and Component-VGA to see if the quality suffers using the latter method. *begins conducting said experiment*

It's going to look awful unless you get yourself an upscaler, since PS2 won't upscale at all. It also doesn't help that the PS3 doesn't have any official VGA cables.

I think the problem is that a lot of HD displays have no idea how to handle a 240p signal over component, thus they show absolutely nothing. I definitely had to switch from component to S-Video on one TV I set up my PS2 on because I couldn't get a picture otherwise.
