Original XBOX Shmups?

Post by Austin »

So, the original XBOX... Yeeeeeaaaah. Not really known for it's shmups. However, it has a few, at least, and I've known about them since the system was new.. I'm curious if there is anything I have missed out on. I personally have a modded system and can access the import shmups that were released without a problem. The question is, how many were released? Here's a list of what I can think of. If anything is left out minus what's available on arcade compilations, please add it with a response (I personally just snagged Shikigami part I cheap on eBay and might grab the second in a few weeks. Will probably pass on Psyvariar 2 due to the going price and since I have it on the DC, but I'm still curious if there's anything else out there I missed that I may want to check out)!

Shikigami No Shiro (Jap)
Shikigami No Shiro II (Jap)
Psyvariar 2 (Jap)

Xyanide (US, sort of one, I guess..)

the games you listed are all the retail xbox shmup games you can get.
but if you have a modded xbox then use either mame(coinops epic) or final burn legends to play games like dodonpachi, esprade, guwange, strikers 1945 1,2,3 and plus, pulstar, blazing star, last hope, raiden fighters 2 (2000) and loads more.

I didn't really dig xyanide too much. Was kinda strange to figure out the controls and what was going on. what you could shoot and and what you couldn't.

Thanks for the responses. I was hoping there was an obscure title or two that I may have missed out on, but I guess not. No big deal, the ones that are there are cheap for the most part.

Oh yeah... MAME was one of the first things I installed when I modded my system a few years back, so I am good there.. I wish I knew someone local that could do the memory mod though. A lot of late '90s ones do not run well (Strikers II, Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix, etc.).

Anyone know what's special about the "Evolution" versions of the Shikigami titles?

Some people may not consider it a shmup, but Panzer Dragoon Orta is, IMO, the best rail shooter ever. You may have already thought about it but didn't list it (assuming you don't consider it a shmup), but I sure consider it a shmup. One of the best.

It's not a shmup in the way most here consider one to be, but it's an excellent game in it's own right. I got it when it was released and it's still one of my favorite games from that generation of consoles.

Panzer Dragoon Orta is one of the best games ever. Epic rail shooting by sega. Second favorite rail shooter after Rez.

Apparently The Red Star for the Xbox (officially released only for the PS2 and then ported to PSP) has leaked as a more or less complete version (not just the demo which was available before). Not exactly a shmup, but shares quite a few things with 2D shooting games. Also, GunValkyrie.

the games you mention like strikers 2 and 3,gunbird 2,mars matrix, progear and so on all play great on final burn legends 1.3 for the xbox.
this was released last year and is a port of one of the newer versions of final burn alpha.

I think I would have to agree that Panzer Dragoon Orta is my favorite on rails shooter, but Star Fox 64 is a close second.
