Gradius Gaiden is good too if we count IT IS COLD IN SPACE as part of the theme.

What other shooting game records the player's own scream of frustration and defeat in real time, only to play it back as a mocking reminder of the player's failure?

Wouldn't really call Ketsui's use of the Howie scream a musical "theme".

Super R-Type and R-Type III have some of my favorites. You almost want to kill yourself just to hear them.

Shin'en games always have very nice Game Over themes as well.

Cho Ren Sha's little jingle is great too. Finally, Zanac's theme is simply a classic.

Thunder Force III, IV and Crimzon Clover
It's cool in all these games to get to hear the great Game Over tune when the enemies keep on appearing and shooting for a while. Looks impressive. ^^
In Thunder Force III you get to see some enemy hoardes for once instead of just blowing them away in less than a second.

Image Fight's is one of my favourites. A good Game Over tune should either be short and punchy, or evocative of despair at your failure.

Yeah, I just wish the developer was working on it a little more, its got great potential but makes a milestone in Valve Time. One of these days I'll get around to uploading a video of it.

Well I guess that's more of a high score theme than game over. I don't have a link to the game over one and it's only a couple of seconds long. Anyway it's still my favorite.
