Printing large JPEGS for posters

Post by drauch »

I've got a few large jpeg files that nice folks have scanned (Gaijin please load yours back up! ) and I would like to get them printed into small poster sizes. I was printing off a mini-marquee for my neo geo the other night at my local fedex place and I inquired on such a thing. The duder told me it would be 40 bucks for a 24X32! Surely there is a cheaper place, or way, to get such a thing printed off, no? What all do you do? Discusssssssss.

My own method of printing is that the image first has to be either horizontal or vertical, then copy-pasting it to MS word then stretching it to a full image when ruler is fixed. Lastly, it is saved as .doc or .docx. The image printing here in our country seems cheaper than yours abroad, since a colored image can only cost between P10 and P30 (Philippine pesos).

I have access to a plotter at school. The quality isn't top notch, but you can't beat the price.

A few years ago when I still worked in reprographics, $5-8 /sq. ft. was pretty standard at retail.

Plus most places will want to charge you a RIP fee, or file processing fee which is often $5-10 per file. Though we would generally waive that fee for "off the street" customers.

Color printing is expensive. It is even more expensive in the US than most anywhere else in the world due to environmental regulations on the chemicals used in the dyes and ink.

Free :) , it's all covered in my tuition. The printer can be finicky with large files, but theoretically it can print 42" x infinity. I printed the Futari poster gaijinpunch posted awhile back and it came out pretty well, I can post a picture when I get home.
As long as I get started on them soon I could print out a handful for anyone here, I just want want to get in the way of end of the semester stuff.

I have DOJ Black label, Mars matrix, Futari, Pink Sweets and Raystorm.

IMO the biggest downfall of using the plotter is that the paper isn't the greatest. It's pretty similar to standard computer paper, just a bit thinner. It's not awful or anything, but I have a feeling that it'll fade really bad in the sun. There's a bit of horizontal banding from the print head as well, but it's not very noticeable. I'm probably making it sound worse than it is, compared to the price of a professional print on the proper machine it's awesome.

If anyone else is interested just PM. If I'm already printing and shipping stuff I might as well do more :P

(the grainyness here is from my camera not the print, but you can see the banding.)
