He's obviously making blind speculation based on the same information that everyone else has - that there's a lot of very radioactive water in the basement. It could have just as easily been washed down there from the spent fuel pool, they have been spraying water in there constantly, after all.
It's fairly likely that there is a leak somewhere by now, at least for reactor 2 (where the workers were injured). Radiation levels at trench #2 (contains piping and cables for its reactor) have been measured at 1,000 milliSieverts/hour, which is indicative that the water has been in contact with molten fuel. (source)

Also:
On March 25, Japanese authorities reported to the IAEA that they had recorded the radiation doses to the thyroids of 66 children living just outside the perimeter of the evacuation zone. These measurements are important because the thyroid tends to accumulate iodine, and radioactive isotopes of iodine make up much of the radiation field being measured far from the reactor site. In addition, children are especially sensitive. The measurements showed no significant deviations from background radiation levels in these children, 14 of whom were infants.

That's true, but leak is not necessarily equal to "molten fuel melted through the containment vessel". I think it's premature and that reporter is irresponsibly increasing panic.

The Guardian article is sensational bullshit, but so are the vast majority of the media's reports about the reactors. All the leak means is that it is likely that water is leaking out of the pressure vessel where it would have been in contact with molten fuel, and nothing more. In the worse case scenario, it's possible that some fuel could have melted through the RPV, but that's what the core catcher is for. And all of that is still being held within the containment vessel.

I, for one, would love to punch every single reporter who has made any claims about the reactors having a criticality accident (by whichever terms they decided to use) and exploding like Chernobyl in the dick. It's literally impossible for the BWRs at the plant to do that by design (words to know: negative void coefficient).

whole heartedly agree - everyone seems desperate to tag "Chernobyl #2".

Barrakketh wrote:The Guardian article is sensational bullshit
You may call it speculative, but I think sensationalist is a bit extreme. It mostly quoted the opinions of an ex-employee from GE, who probably has an agenda but doesn't everyone? Especially the Japanese authorities who need to things in order? I mean, I hope you realise with the time span of this crisis a meltdown is extremely likely at this point. They just need to stick a thermal imager in there to confirm it, very odd that they haven't already. It's important to know what the temperature of the core is.

Also, the BWR design is only slightly better than the NBMK if you ignore the unmovable graphite moderator in the structure and the lack of a containment dome. In the BWR design the biggest flaw (as demonstrated in at least 2 hydrogen explosions in this plant) is the fact that the coolant is also the moderator. The void coefficient is thus sadly irrelevant in this case as the plant is still not passively safe anyway.

This is a cause I would support in every way. After being some of the supposed to areas of danger, my heart goes out to people stuck in kinda bad places around the world that reporters claim are about to go up in smoke. Fuck me in the goat ass... so annoying.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's nuclear safety agency ordered a review Friday of the latest radiation measurements taken in air, seawater and groundwater samples around a leaking, tsunami-disabled nuclear plant, saying they seemed suspiciously high.
These guys are retarded, I wish this was an April fools joke.

In other news:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/ma ... y-hit-bomb
Two people have been injured after a parcel bomb exploded in the offices of the Swiss nuclear lobby in the town of Olten, police said.

The two female employees of Swissnuclear were taken to hospital with superficial burns and hearing damage, a police spokesman said, adding that it was not yet known who sent the parcel.
Gotta love the eco-fascists, resorting to terrorism when they're really upset! Today at uni, a bunch of retards carrying around buckets with radiation sign over them (hint: fake) walked around campus telling people to stand back. One of them got in my face and I had to really control myself as I felt like breaking his jaw.

Well recently the eco fascists tried to bomb Switzerland's first economy/law university. But they are so freaking retarded that they planted their bomb in a nearby insurance building.

The worst is that the government has frozen any plan for new nuclear plants since what the first day of the disaster in Japan, Basel town is even asking nearby French's oldest plant in Fessenheim to be closed. What do those people want? They want to bring us back to the times where we lived in caves and fucked with polar bears to warm ourselves at night, fuck Theodor Kaczynski wannabees who did read John Zerzan too much.

The eco-fascists don't bother me as much as the people who foam at the mouth when nuclear power is mentioned, yet have absolutely no problem with oil and coal. Like they've already forgotten about the Deepwater Horizon, and ignore the people who die working in coal mines, or the pollutants emitted by fossil fuels for transportation and power generation.

It's the same kind of logic that makes some people deadly convinced air travel is dangerous. Because, like, if a plane falls from such height everybody dies for sure!

The problem with being an Ecofacist is effectively all of humanity is your enemy, including yourself. I mean, if I were an Ecofacist, the best thing I could probably do for the environment would be inventing the Black Plague mark II or something. What a terrible hobby.

I realize we need a Doug Stanhope thread...

I don't think this one will appeal to everyone, but someone Stanhope ended up on the Alex Jones show. Whether it's Stanhope just fucking with Jones, or whether it's more like two blowhards yelling at each other, it's wickedly funny to me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc_Qa5m1 ... re=related

Edit: I watched a little more of these two, and realized they're probably friends. Each comedians of their own kind I guess.

Does anyone have a link to Ishihara saying people should keep their hanami to a minimum? (WTF?!) Yeah, something that raises consumption, requires zero electricity, and most important of all, lifts morale. One of my friends last night said, "Someone needs to take him out". Haha.

^you beat me to it while I was typing this:
Sankaku Complex (NSFW) has been running threads about Ishihara for quite awhile. You can fallow their links through the threads to read all of the article. Warning, the site, and it's users are pretty lowbrow.
This guy sounds like a serious pain in the ass politician. Really? Don't go out and have picnics with your friends under the cherry blossoms, it's inappropriate. Returning to normality, and spending time with the people you care about should be considered the most important thing to do after such a tragic event. It would be a form or therapy. The man should be ashamed of himself for saying such a thing.
edit: you might need to link through a few, but they always mention that he had written some questionable material in his youth, not unlike the material that he speaks out against.
