I respect main stream gaming
Ever since i bought an xbox back in october, I've been xboxin all the way..I've been playing first person shooters (men of valor, halo 2), racing gaming(outrun2, nfps 2), action games(ninja gaiden), sport games(nfl street 2,espn football 2k5, fighting(doau, chaos,sf anniversary collection, deception) and i enjoy every second of it. 2004 was def. the year of the xbox. Im no xbox fan boy but I never believed I was going to buy the xbox and actually enjoy so many of their titles..and then I havent even started talking about the capabilities of a modded xbox which are endless. If you wanna take a small breather from shmups, then i suggest a XBOX will be a great gaming experience for you.
The cave whore count in this thread is unbelievable!!!

As you may know, I also am a big XBOX fan. It has so many great games, its not even funny. For the most part, FPS are usually supperior on the "BoX". Lots of cool fighters(Guilty Gear,Soul Calibur2.Street Fighters)) as well as 2D run n guns (Metal Slug) Metal 4&5 are supposed tp be released soon...I hope.
For certain racing games though, I prefer the PS2. Namely, Need For Speed Underground series. The XBOX versions seem too blurry, whereas the PS2 versions are FAR cleaner looking.
Also, when you combine a mod chip to play emu's, well you really cannot beat that either! Especially when you get some nice joystick controllers such as the X-Arcade. Kawa-X turns my XBOX into a Neo-Geo thats plays Halo!!!
PLus, you really cannot beat that there exsist a large good variety of $20 titles.

Lots of EA games are better on the XBOX.
I'm refering to games such as the James Bond 007 series.
Another plus, you can still play Sega games on it!!!
OutRun 1&2, Housed of the Dead 2&3, Panzer Dragoon Orta. All of which are excusive only on the BOX.
There may be more Sega titles, but these are the ones I'm knowledgable about.

well while the concept is the same the execution on x-box vs dreamcast is very different.
personally i like the dreamcast version just a little better because the constant threat of cops made me feel more like the rebel/outlaw-cult-figure you're supposed to be.
also used, its like 5 bucks WITH daytona usa, and theres nothing else like it.
or just rent it, i beat it and unlocked everything in the game in under 14 hours (i had the advantage of being a big fan of the much harder original)

I'll say one thing about the Xbox-Outrun 2 sure looks mighty impressive! Plus it's the last game from Sega's AM2 Team, as I understand.
That's cool that you guys like this system, but for me, it doesn't have anywhere near enough shmups to satisfy my tastes. *shrugs*

Yea, then that way you can play almost every shmup ever made and try it out for yourself!!!PsikyoPshumpPshooterP wrote:you get an modded xbox..and theres the shmup orgy fest for youDaveH wrote:I'll say one thing about the Xbox-Outrun 2 sure looks mighty impressive! Then again, correct me if I'm wrong, but we were discussing how the XBOX is great for those non shmups? (mainstream games) God, I hate that term too!!

oops sorry I mean GT 2002, thats a big difference.TWITCHDOCTOR wrote:Daytona USA on the XBOX!!?? You mean its on the Jet Set disc, or its a compilation of sorts?
Also, how does D.USA compare on the BOX to the Dreamcast version?
but it came as a double disk case i think, at one point they were bundling it with new X-Boxes
but yeah too cheap to pass up really
Gamestop
Twitch, get Otogi as well. You are missing one of the most kick-ass games for the system.
Going back to the topic on hand, it's not that mainstream gaming sucks per se. Shmups used to be mainstream. But when it's been cheapened by countless GTA, MGS wannabees and licensed and watered-down crap, well... it's like choosing to play Ikaruga VS sucking on a rusty nail. Not a hard choice, is it?
Come on Treasure, you developed two games for the flop that was the N64 in Japan. It wouldn't kill you to try and work your magic on the Box, would it?

Well said bro!
That pretty well sums up what mainstream gaming is today, and that's why I'm not interested in it.
That's also why I own an import PSTwo; that's a next gen console that you can buy nothing BUT shmups for (and plenty, too); it's the most shmup-friendly of the big 3 and that's why I like it the best.
Sure, you can emulate on the Xbox, but I can already try out pretty much any game I want on our PC, and I'm not comfortable with emulation aside from trying out games.

It makes me sad, I kinda want to be a mainstream gamer...because I recognize that alot of popular titles ARE good and very well put together, but I just can't get into them. I like platformers like Sly 2 and such, but I get bored with them and can never beat them. I like fps...but only on PC, file me under the "2 analogue sticks just don't work for fps" category. I do want to try out RE4 tho.
What I definitely don't like is the fps with the camera behind the body games like max payne or red dead revolver. Man, I truly despise those games...and there's just so many of them right now (and yes, GTA series falls in this category for me).

I LOVE Jet Set Radio Future...I got the double pack bundled with my first xbox..and I played it rediculously for about two weeks. I still say that it has some of the best gameplay of any game I have played. The graphics are incredibly beautiful as well. I too like JGR a bit better for the same reason MO stated, but man..JSRF is awesome!!
The xbox is one of my favorite systems ever. The emulation on it is killer, and the modification options are immense. Mine currently has a 120gb hdd, two dashboards, about 200 skins..some shmup ones I made myself, a 128mb ram upgrade, now about 20gb of replays, a xbox magic box so I can use a Saturn pad on my xbox, and a few other random things. I bought a 2nd xbox for live play, and I have played a lot of Street Fighter Anniversary and SW Battlefront online. I love this system..

I hope you're not including the splinter cell series under your "MGS clone" category. That series pretty much knocked MGS on its ass and had it running for mommy. Seriously, if you like a convoluted story and are into story over gameplay MGS is cool but I like that stuff in an rpg. I used to have this whole thing written up about how the MGS series relates to Japan's fascination with Gundams but then gamespotting moved to a journal type thing.
The Halo series rocked and like 1up.com said if not for this series you would never have seen an american console on the market. Well the Otakus might hate that but I don't. The more differences between the consoles, the better! Throw in a European type console and I'll be in heaven...
My problems with mainstream gaming include the GT series and Madden. Two overhyped series that have outstayed their welcome. It's really not their fans' fault though. When these two games started, they were very innovative but had a small fan base. By the time the mainstream casual gamer caught on, they were in full on suck mode. Also need for speed: underground sucks too. Who keeps buying this junk?

This thread is basically a Xbox love thread, so I'll address that part first:PsikyoPshumpPshooterP wrote:Ever since i bought an xbox back in october, I've been xboxin all the way..
I bought an Xbox for the DoA, and I stayed for the Halo. Even though I played Halo on the PC already, I beat it on normal and advance with the regular controller(hard is too hard. hehe.) This coming from a FPS maniac since 1999 (UT!). I liked the GTA style taxi mini game so I bought the Simpsons' Hit and Run. And when I had a chance I grabbed the Burnout 3: Takedown game and played it until I got all golds in racing. Such a rush. Those are my xbox picks since I had mine since October as well.
I want to chime in on the general theme, though.
I love video gaming in general, whether it is EA-ified mainstreaming or fan created doodies, PC gaming or even handheld (PDA) games. Let's face it, all games cater to a one mood or another. Can you get the same rush from bringing down 2nd and 3rd place racers in Burnout 3: Takeout during Crash Impact time, as you can from dodging hundreds of bullets in Parsec 47? Dancing up a storm with DDR? Feeding fishiees in Insaniquarium ? Pulling multiple Tetrises in a row? No, I certainly hope not.
Variety is the spice of life. And gaming should be about you and the game, not what other people think or how people are classified.
Keep gaming.

I'm not really into mainstream games.
If like a 1000 games come out in November, which games are you going to put time into. In the end I give up trying to play them all and don't play any at all
... Mind you, I only get to play for a few hours a week, some of you obviously have tons of time on your hands.
I prefer Nintendo's strategy, bring out 10 games a year that are really really good. At least you get alot out of them.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Screw modern mainstream gaming it doesn't need sticking up for.
There's very very few people who are into 2D games compaired to the millions that are playing the latest gore adventure or racing crap it's depressing.
We want our gaming needs cattered for and not on some pokey 3 inch screen with 15 year old graphics.

I find this quote to be rather amusing.

BIG-
Sorry,Richie, but this strategy spells disaster,if ya ask me. Actually, you may want to ask Nintendo, seeing as how badly they are doing, these days.I prefer Nintendo's strategy, bring out 10 games a year that are really really good. At least you get alot out of them.

BIG-
I liked the GTA series up to about Vice City. San Andreas just got a little too redundant. That might not be Rockstar's fault though because the GTA concept has been taken about as far as it can go. If it is stretched any farther, GTA might end up in Morrowind territory.
Still yeah go easy on the GTA series, it was a great concept. Innovation should be rewarded.

Actually, I like em a lot!
Label me under "FPS suck with a mouse" catagory.
Hahaha. I'm 100% the opposite. I cannot for the life of me get used to playing an FPS with a controller. I hate those blasted little analog thumb sticks. This is why I've never purchased an FPS for anything but my PC.
Whenever I'm at a friend's place and they fire up Halo or something on the X-Box, I wander off and go play pool or something. Can't stand the FPS+Controller combination.
It does suck though. Because there are alot of great FPS games released for PS2 and XBox that would be a blast to play online. If they'd just get keyboard and mouse support
