Re: 3DS
Had my hands on it for all of 10 minutes with a demo unit in Walmart:
* 3D works fantastically. Just as I expected, surprisingly enough. Had the slider on max, no issue. Just couldn't move my head more than ~5 inches in either direction, which might be a problem if I'm playing on the bus.
* Felt pretty nice in my hands, even if most of it was covered up to hold it to the kiosk.
* Graphics [of the Pilotwings game at least] weren't what I expected. Might just be because they can get away with it, just coming off of the N64 looking stuff the DS had. Hopefully we'll see something better soon.
I'd have picked one up right then if I could afford one, even if it's only because my DS is beaten up as hell. In reality, I'll have to wait for the 3DS Lite or whatever.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

It's only overpriced when its price has a negative impact on sales. What the market will bear and all that.Elixir wrote:It's overpriced and has no games.
From what I've read the initial sales figures have it outselling the DS launch, so the 3DS will probably end up printing money even at $250.

By that logic, nothing Apple makes is overpriced.Barrakketh wrote:It's only overpriced when its price has a negative impact on sales.Elixir wrote:It's overpriced and has no games.
To save this thread from a string of predictable posts, I'll respond for you.
"Apple's products are not overpriced though, and still sell well."
"People want new things for the sake of new things, regardless of whether they're justified or introduce new material. How do you explain their constant revisions, much like the DSi, DSiXL, and now 3DS?"
"It's called the progress of technology."
"No, it's called incremental upgrading. If something is dropping in weekly or monthly sales, they need to reinvent the wheel in order to boost interest again".
I'm pretty much not bothering with the 3DS, at all, ever. The 3D gimmick doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, it's more "adding ways to view gaming" instead of "adding content to gaming" (I'm not sure how to describe this, but having 3D in a game does not make a game better). It won't have any upcoming games that I'll play for very long, I don't "game on the go", and judging by the games most relevant to 3D (movies) (RPGs), I expect to see 1-3 a year.
More excited for the NGP, honestly.
Re: 3DS
What I've seen of The Kid Icarus game was quite a bit of disappoint: I think the monsters are kitten emoticon :3 cute, but it isn't a 2d platformer and therefore isn't Kid Icarus. Heard someone was interested in putting the next Etrian Odyssey on the beast, uh... Eh.
Elixir, you missed the correct, most important auto-response: "You're not paying for the gadget, you're paying for their advertising!" Like with Chili's restaurants.

PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

The data I heard suggested that Nintendo was making something like $100+ per unit on em at that price....Barrakketh wrote:From what I've read the initial sales figures have it outselling the DS launch, so the 3DS will probably end up printing money even at $250.

Re: 3DS
While I concede that the launch line up is weak, it feels to me like a very nice bit of kit for the price. Having a 3D camera in your pocket is excellent, and from its build quality to UI everything is of a very nice quality. Hopefully the software catalog will catch up with the device (which should fall in price).
Still - the major issue is it making people feel a little unwell. That reality is a difficult one to ignore.

You're ignoring the cost of research and development, marketing, etc. There is more to the cost of a device than just the parts, assembly, and packaging.maxlords wrote:Huh?Jockel wrote:> implying that manufacturing cost equals actual cost for the devices.maxlords wrote:The data I heard suggested that Nintendo was making something like $100+ per unit on em at that price....
Re: 3DS
Oh, that's true. I'd imagine that's a separate department in a company that big, but if you lump it all into one, yeah. Still a pretty nice feat to pull off on launch!

Re: 3DS
That's not to say they don't make ridiculous amounts of profit with that.
It still prints money... in 3D

(I guess this could go in the "Chat" section, but I'm not certain yet (regardless of the article) if it's more of a borderliner or what. Does sound like it could be a straight, on-rails though. )

"Though it appears at first glance to be a God of War-style third-person adventure game, at its core Kid Icarus: Uprising is a fast-paced 3D shoot-em-up.
Whether on the ground or in the air, enemies come fast and hard and from all directions, and most of the game revolves around frantically moving the reticle around the screen in an effort to clear every threat while simultaneously dodging incoming fire with the circle-stick."
New Kid Icarus seems sort of like the controls and view point of Sin and Punishment. Too bad I don't have a 3DS. I wouldn't really want to hold the console for that long anyway.

Making a run 'n' gun with a transforming grappling hook: ChainStaff. Also made a shmup with multi-ships: Shoot 1UP DX, and more .

Re: 3DS
With the latest FW update for the U.S. region 3DS, it doubles as an handy QR reader device using the outer two cameras to scan such codes (activating the 3D feature has no effect when scaning such codes). Stumbled upon it by accident as it wasn't mentioned in the instruction manual whatsoever. Works like a charm, although some of the newer QR codes published in the USA Today newspaper aren't useable with the 3DS. Pretty nifty gaming/multimedia device with more & more useful apps being added for greater functionality over time (i.e. -- Netflix player, QR reader, etc).
