Look at Canibal Ferox, Jungle Holocaust, Man From Deep River, ETC that all have animal killing, yet they don't give off the same effect as Cannibal Holocaust does.
While you could remove those scenes, I doubt if you replaced all the animals with big rubbery fakes the suspension of disbelief would persist long enough to make the "found footage" device work.

Watched Ms .45 last night. Pretty awesome, although the back to back rape scenes kind of pissed my g/f off....oops   Sucks for that chick; walking home from work, get raped, get home to a robber and get raped again. Then go on a killing spree. Awesome! Also has a lot of gory body disposal business. 8) One of Abel Ferrara's earlier films, as always with an excellent score from Joe Delia with some awesome suspenseful piano work. Recommended, but not with the g/f.

Also watched Tony, a weird little UK serial killer flick. It was alright but kind of slow in spots, but thankfully it was gory as hell, so it kind of made up for it. Honestly, I was shocked the g/f sat through it, because normally any gore and she is up and gone, and this was half the movie of the guy casually hacking up bodies in his bathroom. Recommended if you like realistic style serial killer stuff, but definitely not for the squeamish!

I watched most of Nausicaa last night on blu ray (my 2nd viewing).

I wished I could watch it all in one sitting but fell half asleep, possibly left it a bit late to start watching.

For anyone interested, Scarface is getting a UK steelbook on blu ray.

Got bored and watched Rango. Only mentioning it here because it is a bit unusual for a CG kids(?) flick. Not TOO unusual, but there's a 'fear and loathing in las vegas' reference in the first couple minutes if that says anything. It's one of those films that may well be making fun of itself for most of it's running length, but I can't actually tell (two characters look exactly like characters from Jedi, there's an action scene ripped exactly from Raiders of the Lost Ark.) Eh, if your rearing to see something at the theatres that isn't terrible, Rango might be your best shot. Shit, that aint sayin' much.

Great. Now all the rappers on MTV cribs can go "Got mah steelbook Scarface Blu Rayz, gotsa ta have ya steelbook Scarface mang, y'know what I'm sayin'"

Nausicaa is a pretty stunning film, but a little slower than some of his others. Don't watch it in the middle of the night basically.

I watched the documentary Project Grizzly just recently. If you didn't know, it's about an eccentric guy who, after a 'encounter' with a grizzly bear, dedicates his life to building bare-proof suits clearly inspired by sci-fi and action films. The suits are tough, but laughably immobile for something designed for the kind of terrain where you find wild bears. He spends a lot of time in the suits getting beaten up with baseball bats, knocked down steep hillsides, run over with trucks, smasked in the face with trees; that kind of thing.

It is great, but the star of the documentary clearly has a thing for the dramatic and filmic, and is clearly happy to pose for the documentary crew, giving the whole thing a slightly staged feel. Not as good as American Movie or King of Kong, but in the same vein and well worth a watch.

I saw Limitless today. What a great concept for the story. It was a stylish movie that was well constucted, and did a great job at keeping it interesting. I'm happy that they had gone with a different actor than the one that had originally signed on for the part. What I thought was the best thing about the movie was the way it straddled the line of morality, never stepping into any territories of what is right and what is wrong. The main char is unlikeable, but very charismatic. I hope to read the novel,The Dark Fields, word is that they did a very good job at adapting it, but had to change the ending for the movie goers. I'm okay with that for entertainment purposes, but also find stories that end in hardship realistic, and can be just as satisfying. I did full enjoy the movie, and would suggest it.
Before that I saw Battle LA about a week ago. I dunno.. You like Black Hawk Down and aliens? Then see it. I did really like that the aliens were not overpowed, and about the same strength of the human armies. But, the movie was, well I fell asleep for the last half hour so I can't really tell you. There was some running, some shooting, aliens, shooting, and yelling..

Just watched The Fighter about the boxer Irish Mickey Ward. Great movie, A-, well acted, good pacing, strong script. Just all around a sold job.

Its kind of odd seeing such a high profile movie about a guy who I used to watch on Friday Night Fights. Not odd in of itself, but the fact that for most of his career he was a journeyman fighter, not a big prospect or guy you thought was going to have a movie about his life one day.

The movie did play up the title fight at the end of the film. It should be noted that it was not for the actual world championship belt, but for the WBU belt, an insignificant championship in the grand scheme of things. Also, the fight was rather close and Ward was not knocked down as the film portrayed. I don't hold that against the film though as it made for an exciting story.

The funny thing is, without the fights that Ward had AFTER where the film ends, there would not have been a film made and you would not have heard about him.

The fight that really opened the eyes of everyone in the boxing world was when he took on Emanuel Burton on Fright Night Fights, which won fight of the year. I watched it live, great fight. That allowed him to get a shot at Arturo Gatti, who was a big name in the sport and known for being an exciting fighter. They had a famous trilogy of fights that netted Ward around 3 million total for the fights and cemented him as a household name in boxing.

Thanks for that gum_drops. Its good to know more about Ward. I liked the film a lot. Bale was on the money.

Now to Battle LA I guess...

Battle: Los Angeles. Not an all round good film, but it was very good entertainment. It's refreshing to see a science fiction war movie that presents itself as a straightforward military operation instead of an epic action adventure. The aliens were well realised and fit the profile of the movie. Their equipment looked old, rusted, and on the verge of breaking down. You could imagine that they were a third world civilisation by the standards of their planet.

The only times the movie faltered were when the shooting stopped and people started talking. The first act sketched out the characters effectively enough, but the script drank too deeply from the well of Hollywood "this is what it means to be a soldier" cliche as it wore on.

In the last couple of decades, war movies have tended to either be heavy on character studies or just rubbing "war is hell" in the viewer's face. That's fine, but it's a nice change of pace to have an unabashed military shoot 'em up once in a while. I'll probably be buying the blu-ray when it comes out.

I actually liked Skyline more than I liked Battle LA. Battle LA has that big budget trailer with a low budget movie syndrome. It seems to be too Hollywood in the sense that big characters don't die, America wins the day.

At least Skyline went against the grain and kicked our asses.

Watched Paul in theater today, and it totally met my expectations! Aside from boring fart and swearing jokes here and there, it has some good character development, really funny running jokes, and of course, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who're while not at their best here, but it's good to see them again while waiting for The World's End. Overall, a decent sci-fi comedy with good actors and classic ET-ish story

Also purchased Inception on DVD. Wanted to watch it right now, but I'm to sleepy... Zzzz...

Limitless was unwatchably bad. Do. Not. See it.

Notable moments:
- Opening monologue: "For a man with a 4-digit IQ, this was not a glorious way to go out. I thought I could make an impact o the world, but I'd only be making an impact on the sidewalk." First of all, a 4-digit IQ is a meaningless figure, and second of all, for a man who is apparently so smart, why does is his dialogue so cliched and trite?
- "You know how they say you only use 20% of your brain? (total urban myth btw; evolution wouldn't allow beings with such wasteful and redundant anatomies to exist) Well, this pill lets you use all of it." Had to walk out of the theater at this point.
- Evil Russians!
- The blood-drinking scene was so implausible I couldn't stop laughing for two minutes.

Basically, a movie about smart people, written by dumb people who don't understand what "smart" means aside from "talks fast and uses big words and sees the world in blue and orange".

^ you crazy, Limitless was good.

Paul was fantastic, very funny. Way better than I though it would be. Great cast, good jokes, and they did such a good job on the CGI of Paul. Loved it, seen it twice already.
Went and saw Sucker Punch today. I liked it, but it is not for everyone, and allot of people are going to hate this movie. In some ways it is a bit of a mess, but I would say that it was a daring way to tell a story. Some of the themes and scenes are harder hitting than I would of expected. It's already known that this takes place in different parallels of perception, I can't say that it really works, but it sure was cool. I didn't like the guy that was doing a mix of Carradine and Hendrickson, I though his sage like instructions seemed stilted and cheesy.
Once again, very stylish, the man can shoot a film. But, there were some awkward action scenes, it didn't really help that it wasn't reality based, so the action was too grandiose for it's own good. The gun work they did with the girls was top notch! Some of the best gun fighting I had seen in awhile. That's mostly what I went to go see anyway, hot chicks kicking ass, and it was there in spades.
I thought the music was oddly selected, and there is allot of it in the movie, but everyone I went with said that was something they enjoyed, so it may just be me. I would say the trailers do a good job of letting you know what you are in for, and if you like the look of it, you should see it. I'll be looking forward to when I can get my hands on a copy of it.

I saw Battle LA while I was here in the states. Good action. Awful dialogue. Extremely predictable. Worth seeing once? Only if you don't want to think. Too bad nobody will throw a curve ball at the Alien genre like District 9.

watched 2 movies yesterday.

1. Scott Pilgrimm vs The World
I've gotten too old for these kind of movies it seems. I thought it was boring but loved the comic book/videogame theme. Michael Cera is pissing me off for some reason.

2. Groundhog Day
Bill Murray. I haven't watched a movie with him in ages and haven't watched this movie before. LOVED IT!

^ it really sucks that you haven't seen Groundhog Day before, part of the joy comes from re-watching it several times. I've seen that movie well over 20-30 times now over my life. It is one of the best movies ever made. Supposedly, I should probably have checked IMDB first to confirm, but the script states that he spent over a thousand years repeating the same day over. But, it was too difficult to try, and get that through in the movie so it was left unsaid how long he was stuck in that cycle. Great concept, and a secret fantasy for everyone at some point.
