the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Finally after 11 years I decided to play Deus Ex. Been on my "must play" list for ages. Now I just need to play the Thief games and I think I'm caught up to FPS games I should have played years ago.

Managed to get in my pre-order for the Balls of Steel Edition of Duke Nukem Forever on PC from Amazon. We'll have to see how it turns out in the end, but I think the game looks great, and I'm looking forward to playing it. If nothing else, it'll be like having a nice piece of gaming history

If I were you I would use a trainer to enable unlimited carry weight because seriously the limit annoyed the shit out of me, pick up everything and anything and stockpile that shit :pKingbuzzo wrote:just started really getting into STALKER SOC. Totally didn't understand the game until a few hours in. Haven't seriously played a single player fps since Half Life 2, and I'm not usually a fan of the bleak spooky genre. But as I go on, I'm totally hooked on the game. The various tasks are really fun. Plenty of depth, and....scary shit.
Been using the Complete Mod with it. Maybe I'm a pussy, but I can't progress very quickly through the game unless it's on novice, and I'm still dying all the time.

Stalker was one of the few fps games I have ever played that had some really nice music that still echoes in my mind today, plus it was pretty scary.

Somedays i wonder where i lost my DooM 2 Master levels cd-rom, damn i miss it. Probably been "borrowed" by someone back in high school.
Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
A few weeks ago I tried the Crysis 2 demo on Steam (which oddly enough ran much better than I expected on my 4-year old rig) and had a pretty entertaining firefight.
You can use your suit power to vault over stuff, grab ledges and pull up, etc, so you can traverse most of the levels parkour style if you want to.
I got into a firefight with someone next to a shed. He rounds the corner, and instead of following, I jumped onto the shed and pounced over the other side to cut him off. Apparently he had the same idea and vaulted up as soon as the rounded the corer to cut back. And so we missed each other somehow and ended up jumping up and down this stupid shed trying to catch the other off guard. Eventually he got me coming off the ledge, below me with a shotgun doing a slide maneuver and firing straight up at me. Then my body blasts up from the impact of buckshot-to-groin, and I get treated to a replay of the pain (you see a replay from your opponents perspective when you die). Well, at least I hope that was a fatal shot, I wouldn't want to live through that.

Ahahaahaha! That's a good one, that made me laugh!!
This was to be expected! June of what year by the way?

Also notice that International date is actually earlier than the "now coming" release date. That's the exact opposite of the previous May release date. It smells like rotten meat but I doubt this will be released this year.

Its not as cool as the nuke in fallout though. Modern warfare 1 is pretty fun for the story and such even though im not a fan of the series. Gameplay is strange, bullet wounds will heal themselves in seconds/minutes, even at hard difficulty, it feels like playing a movie. I have played single player campaign once, then deleted it.

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
I really enjoyed the very first CoD and agree that it was a groundbreaking game. I've even downloaded it on my PS3 to relive its kickass singleplayer campaign again. Afterwards I've skipped the next entries (and the CoD fans that I know say that I did right). But since I saw the nuke scene in ScrewAttack's 'Top 10 OMGWTF Moments' video... I mentally jizzed all over the TV screen: 'Whoa, this pop art does have BALLS!'Evilmaxwar wrote:Its not as cool as the nuke in fallout though. UPD: Forget everything I said. CoD 4 turned to be a piece of rotten whoreshit. Fahrenheit 2, if you will. Looks like the nuke part is the best thing in this game, but when the cutscenes are better than the gameplay... Why do all FPS seem shitty to me afer Marathon 2?!

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Besides shmupping, I've also been playing these:
1) Half-Life -> Damn, it took me a month to finish this.
2) Call of Duty -> Just finished the PSP port of this.
3) Wolfenstein 3D -> The original PC version looks easy compared to the GBA version that I've played.
4) Doom series -> Hell, yeah! I've been a Doomer since I was young. I've played every single series and they look awesome. The ports look horrible except for the PSX and N64 versions. I did played Doom 3 either. My best play here is Ultimate Doom Episode 1, UV-Max-ing my way through the entire episode under 30 minutes.
5) Counter-Strike -> I've played as Counter-terrorist in this one, fragging many enemies with a sniper. My favorite map here is de_dust2.wad.
6) Left 4 Dead series -> Wow, looks like reality meets zombies!

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
You might add the Painkiller series to that list, i cant see how a fan of the good old doom would not like Painkiller, imo painkiller is what DooM 3 should have been like.
My all time favorite FPshooters:
DooM I & II > Painkiller series > Duke Nukem 3d = Serious Same series.
Then theres the rest. I sure had a good time with Prey, funny game : " Do not play with protein, protein is for mother"

I don't know, but I played pretty far into Pain Killer 1 back in 2007 and the levels & gameplay felt a bit repetitive...Evilmaxwar wrote:You might add the Painkiller series to that list, i cant see how a fan of the good old doom would not like Painkiller, imo painkiller is what DooM 3 should have been like.

How good is the rest of the series?
As for Prey, it seems that Prey 2 will be released in 2012 and the story-line & gameplay sounds interesting an non-linear:

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Of course its repetitive! just like original DooM, serious same ( why do you think i call it Serious Same lol ) and such. Its all about killing everything as fast and efficiently as possible, beating your own best times, beating levels on nightmare without ever saving, having more than 1000 enemies per level, stuff like that. If you do not particularly dig that recipe do not bother with the rest of the series. Its pretty much more of the same. Im happy there are actually a few FPS like that because thats what i like best. Stuff like COD or Half life usually gets me too bored to continue before i have time to beat the game.ST Dragon wrote:I don't know, but I played pretty far into Pain Killer 1 back in 2007 and the levels & gameplay felt a bit repetitive...
I actually liked Crysis quite a bit. You can play it in many different ways. You can hide in the woods and snipe. You can attack enemies from any directions or you can run a jeep full speed right in the middle of the enemy base, jump a second before it crashes in an enemy car and start to blow everything up at point blank. Its a game that satisfies both campers and reckless maniacs.

Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Crysis 2 is pretty good. I bought the PS3 and PC versions both - just had to have a console version as well, and wasn't sure if the X360 one would play on my Japanese 'box. Actually the USA X360 version has no region protection from what Play-Asia says, but I didn't know before preordering.
The CELL PMC units take the place of the North Korean KPA from the other Crysis titles. There's a virus going around NYC and Prophet is infected. You're Alcatraz but the PMCs believe you are in fact Prophet- so they're out to get you.
My PC I'm using to run this is a Dell XPS 435T/9000, but modified with a GTX 580 and a Corsair TX950 PSU (PSU upgrade due to the 600W requirement of the new vidcard).
The PS3 version looks surprisingly good for a console port, but the PC one offers better framerates, crisper textures, and improved lighting/FX. Comparison videos just don't tell the whole story. I was able to pull off some more headshots on the PC one using mouse & keyboard control. On all versions- yes, even PC- you can't save at will. That's right, the save system is checkpoints only similar to Far Cry.
You can't go prone in Crysis 2, but this never has been a major issue for me.
Stealth mode now lets you attack enemies from behind for a stealth kill. To do a 1HKO power punch, you hold the melee button to charge up strength for a moment. When you kill aliens, you can go up to their corpses to gather Nano Catalyst- which is spent on upgrades to your suit's powers. There's some fun to be had using stealth mode with C4- just be ready to run though, you'll decloak once you set it on something.
C2 may not have DX11 support, but it still looks great. The gameplay is comparable to the original- and the series IMO has served as something different than the usual COD clones. You can take many different approaches to the same bit in a level of Crysis.
I'll probably wait a bit before getting COD Black Ops. I'm considering going with PC on that one when I do (consoles need to get M&K support for FPS).

Hexen II (PC)
Hexen II - Portal of Praevus (PC)
Prey (PC)
Unreal (PC) (Not Tournamnet but the original 1998 solo campaign)
Duke Nukem 3D - Superb! I already tried this, but it's a bit difficult, but it's still an awesome game. I also have the PSX version of this either, but I also have the complete collection of this one (which is a single CD), which are the follow-ups to this one.
Heretic - I did play this one on Normal (Yellowbellies 'r' us), and damn, the health rate of the enemy looks random than Doom, and it uses the engine from it. Oh, and using IDKFA in this game dares you to challenge the game using the pole for the entirety of the game. Played all 5 episodes.
Hexen - Gameplay looks the same as Heretic, except you can now jump, and, for the bad thing, fall fatally! I am playing currently the PSX version of this. I know, playing with the gamepad looks difficult, but the PC makes the character easier to control. 'Death Kings' expansion, haven't played it yet but planned on getting it.
Hexen II - Haven't played it, but I do have a copy of this one! Might try it later.
Star Wars: Dark Forces - I've been watching all the Star Wars series (except for a few), but this FPS incarnation looks awesome! I have the PSX copy of this one, and tried it.
The rest, never played them and never had a original copy of it. On my YouTube channel, I used to play Doom actually, since I've done UV-Max-ing some of the maps in it. See category 'Doom speedruns' to find out why. I don't know how I did these demos because I haven't signed up to a site called DSDA (short for Doomed Speed Demos Archive), they have the same company as SDA, except they only allow Doom demo files. I checked their site and most of the times are nearly hard to beat, since they require quick reflexes, point-blanking enemies, quick puzzle-solving, etc.
The best run I ever did in Doom was in a WAD called Scythe. I did a speedrun of Map10 on Ultra-Violence (Hard) and I beat the current record holder 'Opulent' within 0:23.
Doom became the most popular first-person shooter because of the source ports established. I think I might continue to create more Doom demos once I return from shmupping.
For Doom 4, there can possibly be Doom II again! Because the franchise is returning to Earth! It's odd why the series takes place on Mars on the odd-numbered games whereas it's on Earth on the even-numbered ones.

I spent a few hours running through the original Painkiller (PC) last night. Got to the last episode on the hardest mode and finished it up earlier today. For those that haven't tried it, it's an excellent DOOM-styled FPS. I may start the expansion (Battle Out of Hell) tonight. I am kind of jaded when it comes to modern first-person shooters, but this one came out just before everything strived to be uber-realistic. I come back to it at least once a year.

One thing i like to do in Painkiller is have the razor cube throw on a handy hotkey and just as i kill a monster, spam hit the monster repeatedly with the razor cube, it will hold in mid air and spit golden treasures repeatedly. Its such a ludicrously great game.
Re: the first person shooter game thread (eew fps)
Haha yeah, same here. It's a great way to earn extra money early on in the game while enemies are still slow. I tend to try and juggle enemies just for fun though later on in the game, hehe.

Why did you quote all of that, hundreds of words you've already posted on the last page, just to add one tangentially-related sentence below it?
