Fantasy Zone II ROCKS
Fantasy Zone II ROCKS
Hey, I've been playing Fantasy Zone II SMS lately and am really digging it. At first I didn't like that your ship starts slower than the first game, but the addition of the warps makes up for it. It's surprisingly hectic for a console game of that era! I'm also glad that the laser beam isn't overpowered, as opposed to Super Fantasy Zone where you can nearly skip levels with it.
I was wondering if anyone here had any favorite strategies to share-- what items they usually buy in the store, and things like that. Also, is there a reason to ever buy multiple items in the same category (e.g. 2 engines, or 2 gun types)?

One of my favorite SMS games. Played it to death, but it's been a long time ago so I can't help you much.
IIRC my usual gear was jet engine, big twin shot and big twin bombs. I didn't buy much stuff from the store, I'd usually hoard my money for the secret shops (they're invisible, you need to shoot them to make them appear. I believe the first one is on the fire world) and buy extra lives and the potion that increases your lifebar. The game becomes a lot easier with a big lifebar.
One of the levels has all the enemy factories on the ground, so you can use a fire bomb to destroy most of them quickly.
As for buying multiple parts, those are meant to be a spare in case you die and lose all your stuff. Just enter the store, exit and equip the spare parts. I don't bother doing that though.

I recommend the Sega Ages port of the game for PS2. They remade the entire game as it would be, had it been released in the arcades on System16 hardware back when the game was originally made.
It's beautiful, too.

I bought the Sega Ages Fantasy Zone Collection just for that remake. I had a really hard deciding whether or not to buy the collection until I found out that it had an exclusive remake. I tried it out and fell in love with itSumez wrote:I recommend the Sega Ages port of the game for PS2. I love this remake. Such a fun and beautiful game. Looks great in 480 on an lcd too.Shelcoof wrote:I bought the Sega Ages Fantasy Zone Collection just for that remake. Is it better than Super Fantasy Zone? I do not care for that game.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Are you talking about the remake? In my opinion it's definitely my favorite game on the collection. Here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B71Cqw1ZEFQDrum wrote:Is it better than Super Fantasy Zone? I do not care for that game.
Think of the remake as a new and improved version of the SMS Fantasy Zone II but instead on the Genesis/MegaDrive

Oh, so it's a remake? Well. I guess I know where I stand on the SMS version then.

Re: Fantasy Zone II ROCKS
I just made it to stage 5, and it's completely kicking my ass.
So, aside from big bomb, twin bomb, and big shot, are there other powerups you can buy which aren't limited use?

What's better, Fantasy Zone II or Super Fantasy Zone? I don't have a Japanese PS2 or I'd buy the collection :\
Just gonna have to dust off my Wii and nab one of the two off of VC.

It's better than that. M2 actually did the remake on a System 16 arcade board with extra ram!Shelcoof wrote:Are you talking about the remake? I personally like II a lot more, but Super Fantasy Zone has better graphics and sound (of courseSpecial World wrote:What's better, Fantasy Zone II or Super Fantasy Zone? I don't have a Japanese PS2 or I'd buy the collection :\

The bad things about FZ2? Well, it has a lot of slowdown. I also didn't like that when you die, the shop doesn't appear (I think it does in SFZ). Instead, you have to limp your busted slow ship to it

Can't speak for the sys16 remake since I haven't played it. It looks amazing though. I think it is also available in MAME now (since .141?).
For people who want a real cart of SFZ btw, the Euro version is cheap. While people were dishing out 70+ bucks for the Japanese cart, I got the European edition for just a couple pounds!

this. Really, you just need those items to easily finish the game. Forget about everything else and just hoard extra lives.IRC my usual gear was jet engine, big twin shot and big twin bombs. yes, well, sort of. A bootleg of it called 'FZ-2006' is emulated. The roms from the PS2 release can be extracted and also run, but an actual board using those roms has never been found, and thus it isn't supported in that form and Sega only produced a handful of originals.louisg wrote:Special World wrote: Can't speak for the sys16 remake since I haven't played it. System 16 Fantasy Zone is my favorite in the series. Super Fantasy Zone doesn't even compare in my opinion. In fact S16FZ2 (Wow, that's a long acronym!) is probably one of my favorite shmups on the PS2.
